We are very sorry to hear about your experience with our 100% pure cedarwood oil. There are many different types of cedar and each has a distinct smell – western, white, Texas, etc. Ours is Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus Virginiana), only grown in the Southeast US. Juniperus Virginiana is prized for it’s deep red, pinkish heartwood. The heartwood is what a lot of customers look for. This heartwood contains the essential cedarwood oil that does make it an effective insect repellent. Aromatic Eastern Red Cedar has been used for years as an effective and natural way to deter pests. This essential oil that comes from Eastern Red Cedar wood is highly aromatic, which makes cedar wood an effective insect repellent. The scent overpowers them and interferes with their neuroreceptors the insects use for navigation. Giles & Kendall has been steam distilling pure Juniperus Virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) Cedarwood oil since 1926. One of the natural components in Eastern Red Cedar and it’s oil is called ‘Cedrol. It’s a ‘sesquiterpene alcohol’ used in the chemistry of aroma compounds. It’s essentially what gives Aromatic Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus Virginiana) it’s amazing smell!
