Very problematic with no customer support
We had this lock professionally installed by a locksmith. When using the app to lock the door, it locks, but shows up as “jammed” on the app. We called for customer support but could not get anyone to answer our call once being told to hold. So, when we’re out of the house, we can’t tell if the door has actually locked or is truly jammed. What a waste of money. Kwikset should have excellent customer support, but actually has none.

Hello Gigi,
Thank you for your review and please allow us the opportunity to assist you further. To fix the jamming error, we recommend measuring the door frame jamb hole to ensure that it's at least 1 inch deep, check your door alignment, and perform the manual door handing step below.
1. Open door and extend latch to locked position.
2. Remove battery pack.
3. Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Release button once battery pack is installed. The status LED will flash red and green.
4. Press the Program button once more.
5. The latch bolt will retract about halfway in and then extend to learn the orientation of the door.

    Instructions were detailed
The installation instructions on the manual and online were easy. Downloading the app and installing on my Galaxy 10e took about the same time. It all works great. I can create 250 codes and get notifications when the lock is unlocked. I can lock or unlock from my phone from anywhere. I also like the SmartKey technology because I was able to key this lock to the key I wanted easily.

I love it, I can open or close from any country. I can use 250 codes. I can change the code every month if I want. Is perfect.

          Love the lock, but
Wish the phone pairing instructions were better. The app seems to be a bit buggy in that I have to open and close the app repeatedly to issue a command. Love the rekeying feature, was definitely the decision maker for me.

              Craps out repeatedly
I purchased 8 of these and they crapped out day 1. While installing, the app shows its already connected so an error occurs. I had to reset and start over again multiple times. Then i get them all working and batteries start to die out by week 2. I live 40 minutes away and have people checking in across town so I have to run over to replace the batteries. Then, i get weird status messages like "Jammed" and "offline" but can't get an answer to what these mean or what is the root cause of these codes. My wifi is up and i get the jammed when i walk away from resetting and testing them. I then call Kwikset and am told i will get a call back and no one calls me back!!! Its so frustrating and stressful! It also doesn't always recognize the new guest code you enter.

Got this because I'm lazy, and hate keys! Super easy to install and setup. I was concerned because my door closes vary snugly, and required you to pull on the door when locking. Works perfectly. No more keys!

Sleek Look, Nice Features, Terrible Battery Life
This lock has a nice sleek look and some good features, however, the battery life absolutely SUCKS! I have to change the batteries approx every 4-6 weeks. I have other kwikset locks where I haven’t had to change the batteries for at least 2 years. I would return it but its too much trouble to remove it from the door.

Extremely good lock - challenging installation
This lock is terrific and worth your time/investment. However, I believe the majority of consumers will need a professional to install. I had an experienced locksmith who spent one hour getting it up and running. And that did NOT include time with the app. Best Feature: No smart home hub needed. Easy to create unique door codes - and then delete them on the app. Extremely intuitive app. A great solution for anyone running a vacation rental OR someone with children/teens coming and going.

I won't give Halo a 5 rating because it has disconnected from Wi-Fi twice and it won't connect back to Wi-Fi automatically. You have to go through the Bluetooth process in order to get Halo connected back to Wi-Fi. However the disconnection happened only twice during the first week of use. I have been using Halo for a month now. Also, it would be nice if Halo Deadbolt could be opened through Bluetooth by a password. Halo doesn't support opening through Bluetooth. Bluetooth is just for setup. If you like the Bluetooth opening option, Kwikset offers another cheaper deadbolt. Overall, Kwikset Halo is a great innovative product.

Kwikset HALO Satin Nickel Electronic Smart Lock Deadbolt - Smartkey, Touchscreen and Wi-Fi all in one lock - I am sold! I have installed Kwikset Smart locks on both my home residence and a vacation home and I am definitely a fan! I have had some for more than 6 years and they still work perfectly, the only upkeep is replacing regular double A batteries every 6 to 8 months. The Kwikset HALO is one of their newest models that is both well made and stylish. It is very heavy duty and the brushed Nickle finish is very beautiful and it is print resistant too! One of the things I like best about Kwikset is you can rekey all of your Kwikset locks- both Smart Lock and standard locks - using the Smartkey tool provided with the hardware. You can rekey as many Kwikset locks as needed so instead of having 3 or 4 keys on your keyring you will only need one and you don't even have to call a locksmith for a rekey! The second thing I really like about Kwikset is the installation is fairly standard across all of their locks and it is quite simple if you follow the instructions included with the box. I am a female DIY'er and I have installed all of these locks myself, the only tricky part is holding the exterior lock while trying to attach the cable and interior assembly. It is probably easier to have a second person but it is possible to do this on your own, I just used some packing tape to tape the exterior assembly to the door to keep it in place and it was then much easier to attach the interior assembly. Also just a little tip I learned from a locksmith, when installing a lock you should always make sure the hole in the door frame is chiseled to the same depth of your latch. He showed me how easy it is to pry open a lock with a credit card or screw driver wedged between the door frame and the latch and it was shocking, he was able to open both my garage and front doors with no problem. It is scary to think how many people are unaware their locks are susceptible to break-ins. Once you have installed the Halo Smart lock you will want to install the software on your mobile phone. This is not necessary but it is a nice feature because you can remotely open your door for guest, a delivery person or someone who forgot their keys. This lock also has a touch screen key pad as well as a standard lock so if you don't want to be bothered with the app to open your door you have other options to open your door. The Kwikset Halo software was easy to install and I didn't have any problem pairing the lock and software. Also up to 250 access codes can be programmed at one time so you don't have to worry about running out of codes for family and guests. Additionally you can receive alerts and notifications when the lock is opened or locked so if you forget to lock the door the app allows to remotely lock the door, another really nice feature of the Halo. Just a side note, this Kwikset Halo Smart Lock is a deadbolt lock so you will still need a door handle with a lock in conjunction with this deadbolt. Additionally, the price point for the Halo is fairly reasonable for a Smart Lock that also has a lifetime mechanical and finish warranty. I am a big fan of the Kwikset brand, especially their Smart Locks. These locks are sturdy and well made, have a beautiful finish and design and they are durable and last for many years. To add to all of this they are priced reasonable and they have a lifetime warranty. What more can you want in a lock!

When we travel it's nice to be able to turn on a specific code for our house sitter so we know when they come and go and we can turn that code off when we return. It's nice to be able to check the lock from our phones when we are away to make sure the deadbolt is actually locked. It's also nice that we can remotely unlock the door if needed. Another nice feature is that the key can be easily rekeyed to match existing Kwikset locks using the tool and instructions that come with the lock so I only have one key to work all the locks, Installation and configuration was quick and easy, better than most WiFi connected devices.

My neighbor put this on his front door last year. After his amazing experience I got one. This replaces the deadbolt on the door. It's a pretty easy install and the instructions are very good. The set up is a bit complex, it has to be to protect your home. However if you follow the instructions, carefully, and take your time, it is worth the effort to set it up. I can now change the door code from the phone, anywhere. I can set up temporary codes for a contractor. I can have an individual code for different folks and know when they used the lock. For my family it's just one code. We are not that complicated. The final wow, the batteries last for months. That's the real plus!

Kwikset’s HALO Wi-FI Electronic Single-Cylinder SmartLock Deadbolt was no problem to replace a Kwikset single cylinder deadbolt in my utility room access door with only a No.2 Phillips Screwdriver. The metal door had been pre-drilled for the dead-bolt and was perfectly sized for the SmartLock Wi-Fi lock. I removed all of the installed deadbolt’s parts and mounting hardware to ensure that the new lock’s fasteners and hardware would fit together well when installed. The changeover took about twenty minutes and the new, Wi-Fi lock with digital keypad worked smoothly on the first try. I paired the new lock with my cell-phone and could lock and unlock the Wi-Fi deadbolt by touching the face of my phone. The phone also pairs with my homes Wi-Fi (without a hub or bridge) to display the status of the lock. It even warns if the lock is actuated from a “screen lock” condition. I can also check the locks status from my phone anywhere I have internet access.

This was ordered online and shipped to my home without issue. This is the second smart kwikset product that we have installed in our home and we just love them. I installed this into a door that already had the holes drilled for a deadbolt so I did not have have to modify my door in anyway. However, the app will walk you through the installation process if you don't have holes pre-drilled in the door. The installation is fairly easy and is on par with a non-smart lock. Remove the existing deadbolt and install the mounting bracket to the front facing lock and then add the mechanism to the back with a couple additional screws. The app will then walk you through the setup to add this to your home network and programming user specific codes and schedules. The thing we love the most about this lock is that you can re-key this door with your existing house key as long as you can insert the key into the lock.

I've been using Kwikset's 916 SmartCode locks for a long time, and while they were workable, they had two severe issues: battery life and touchscreen functionality. A third issue was that they required a smart home hub, which was an added cost, and also limited functionality to whatever the hub manufacturer wanted to allow. Pairing them with my Wink Hub allowed nothing other than locking and unlocking - user codes were not accessible. Well, the good news is that the new Kwikset Halo WiFi solves at least one of these problems. The use of WiFi for lock control means that this product works out of the box, no other devices required. You use Kwikset's app, and it's quite full-featured. With that said, the WiFi implementation is somewhat limited, as you need to use Bluetooth not only to set it up, but also to access a number of its functions, including programming the auto-locking routine, changing the lock sounds, and a few others. I'm a little surprised at this, but there must be a technical limitation on what kind of data can be sent over WiFi. Strangely, you can add new user codes remotely via WiFi, which is probably what you'll do more often, but that makes the requirement to revert to close-range Bluetooth for some functions all the more strange. Another frustrating problem is that the touchscreen issues remain from the 916. Whatever Kwikset is doing to preserve battery life makes it virtually impossible to get the screen to activate on the first try. I find my self slapping the screen repeatedly to get it to turn on. Yes, I've read the instructions that suggest placing three fingers across it (which is a pretty awkward maneuver, by the way), but even this isn't all that reliable. The good news is that when it turns on, the touchscreen looks very cool, so at least there's that. The buttons are relatively sensitive, so I didn't find myself missing too many number presses while using it. There is one thing that Kwikset thankfully redesigned from the 916 model, and that is that the batteries can be removed without having to take off the whole cover, which was a major design flaw on the original. With that said, I haven't used this long enough to know how often I'll need to change the batteries, but my experience with the Z-Wave-based 916 is that the batteries did not last longer than 6 months, and with the added power load of WiFi and Bluetooth, I can only assume battery life will be on the order of 3 months with the Halo WiFi. Overall, I think that the Halo WiFi is going to really expand the potential market of Smart Lock owners, given that it doesn't require users to own a separate smart home hub. I'm a little frustrated that the touchscreen issues from the previous version haven't been fixed, but at least it looks good. I have yet to truly judge the battery life (that will take months), but my assumption is that Kwikset's estimate of 6 months is highly optimistic, and it will be closer to half of that. So have a lot of AA batteries handy!

Kwikset brand locks are a trusted name in home security. The HALO wi-fi enabled Smartcode touchpad electronic deadbolt lock features an outdoor electronic touch screen keypad that can be programmed for multi-user access. This is a well-made lock that looks great and is built to last. Installation is easy if replacing an existing lock. Unit operates on four AA batteries, which are included. After the lock is installed, you download the Kwikset app, set up an account, and follow the prompts to add the lock. No hub is needed to link to the wi-fi network. Programming is easy to follow and takes only a few steps and has many options, including the ability to enter codes that can be used anytime, limited by date, limited by day and time, or once in a 24 hr. period. This is a great feature to program access for service personnel or routine guests. There is a “lock” on the touch screen to set the lock from the outside. When lock is linked to your home 2.4 ghz network, you can lock and unlock the door from your smart phone, and monitor its status. A full log is available on the app to check the locks usage. This lock features Smart key - where you can reprogram the lock to accept any Kwikset key – allowing for multiple locks to utilize the same key. Lock is attractive and functional, and the wi-fi capability is a great way to monitor whether you remembered to lock the door! Note that this is a dead bolt lock, not and entry lock.

Great lock and very convenient. This lock is pretty straightforward as far as electronic deadbolts go. You just have to follow the instructions and it works like a charm. I did not have to modify my door at all. I just followed the directions and it works well. I really love this lock since I can do away with keys and can never be locked out. Well, this is a nice and fairly sleek looking lock, for an item of this type. The package came provided with everything you need for installation. Came with batteries included so you don't have to run out and get some first thing. The installation is pretty easy, althoughr I did have a friend who's done this before, come over and do it for me. Easy to program and ofcourse, comes with keys, incase the battery goes out on you or you forget your code. Only things to be aware of, you have to have your WIFI and ideally, you are replacing a dead bolt with this unit. If not, you will have to drill your door and door frame accordingly, and you will want to have someone experienced to do that. Overall, i's a yes from me.

The biggest selling factor for this lock is the exterior keypad. I replaced an earlier version of Kwikset lock that had only a deadbolt, so you needed a key to open a locked door. Installation was very simple, downloaded the Kwikset app and set up the lock for WI-FI and a key code. Everything worked the first time. Only disappointment with this lock set is that it is not Z-Wave compatible so it does not work with my security system, but I knew this going in. It works great with the app on my phone, and it paired directly to Alexa. Satin finish is very nice. So far I am happy with this lock set.

This lock almost checks all the boxes for what I was looking for in a smart lock. Love the re-key feature, and the app works great. I do wish it had Alexa integration. I know it’s a brand new product line from Kwikset, and that’s a feature that could be added at any time. They have other products with smart assistant support, so it should only be a matter of time before they add it to their wifi products as well. I also found the installation to be very straightforward. Just keep in mind there are a few extra steps since it is a smart lock. Overall I’m very satisfied.

The Kwikset HALO Satin Nickel Keypad Wi-Fi Electronic Single-Cylinder Smart Lock Deadbolt featuring SmartKey Security is a decent deadbolt as you might expect from Kwikset. A nice lock for replacement or new installation, this unit is solid. The instructions for installation are fairly easy and installation can be accomplished in about a ½ an hour. All parts are included (including batteries for the keypad). The weatherproof touch pad keys light up red making it easy to see in the dark. You can open and lock this unit by phone from anywhere. The look is modern and tough looking (good to scare off would be buglers) but be forewarned that you must fit the strike plate to your door perfectly. * Nerd Tip: This unit does not give you much leeway in the bolt travel. If you are off even a little, the bolt will not extend properly and will not complete locking. Also, be forewarned that this unit needs a smartphone to complete the code access and set. You have to create a free account on their website and you must have a compatible smart phone to complete THE CODE to open and close the lock. They give you 5 options of locks and phones for the setup process but if you don't have a compatible phone... That part is a major downer for people like me who do not have a smart phone. Otherwise, the included keys (you get 2) work just fine but that defeats the key-free touch-pad function doesn’t it? This unit should have the ability to simply select your own passcode and enter it without needing a phone. The bolt is a generous length for security and the lock action knob on the inside is very nice and smoothly operates. Other than the requirement of a smart phone for set up, this is a really nice lock.

I like Kwikset locks. I have four other exterior locksets on my house, all Kwikset. I wanted an electronic lock on the front door and put on a different brand. But that puts an additional key on my key ring so I decided to put this on instead. Unfortunately once I had this installed it did not work. It is confusing what screw does what and there are big cautions about this so it is possible it was me. But remember this isn't my first installation. If it was me it could be you too. On the other hand, the parts seemed to be higher quality than the other brand I am using.

This Kwikset Halo deadbolt lock could be an amazing time and labor saver for certain people, but it has limitations. The lock has is the Kwikset’s SmartKey feature that allows the user to re-key the lock themselves in a few seconds. This is very handy when adding a new lock and needing to key it the same as others of the building or property. Landlords would love this as well as it provides extra security for new tenants without calling a locksmith and at no extra cost. The keypad allows one or more user-set codes to operate the lock. If you need a temporary code for construction workers to access the property for example, simply program one in and then delete it when the job is finished. This is a next-generation lock, which adds another means of locking and unlocking. In addition to a key and a touch keypad, you can now use a smartphone, theoretically from anywhere in the world, to lock, unlock, or check the status of a lock. You can also get alerts when the door is locked or unlocked, set a schedule for automatic operation, and get a history of when the lock was operated, even if it was done manually. I found installation pretty much the same as with any other deadbolt lock, with special attention paid to battery connection and orientation. About an hour of additional time was needed to download the app, sync it with the lock, allow downloading up the updated software and setting the codes. It was necessary to install the deadbolt without the knob or lever in place, since access to the bottom screw is almost impossible otherwise. I did have a problem getting the outside portion to fit flat against the door after tightening the bolts. My metal-clad door must have deformed slightly from the tightening of the screws, although I did not have that problem with the previous (keypad style, but non-smart) deadbolt. The larger size of this lock, with attachment at only the bottom portion could make this a problem for others as well. I found the app less than user friendly, with odd placement prompts for progressing through the setup steps, inability to easily go back, and a couple crashes. Keep in mind that none of the smart features will work without accessible wifi within reach of the lock, without a smartphone (no, a laptop will not work), or without bluetooth capability. Even when all is working properly, I found that the app was clunky and responsiveness was often slow. The app is a required feature for this lock to work, which means yet another app on your phone, since it does NOT work with Echo or Alexa. Hopefully, the app will be supported for the next 30 years or longer, which should be the usable life of the lock. That alone is a bit of a gamble. Another disappointment is that the app showed that the lock’s batteries were at zero percent, even when they were brand new and working perfectly. There is no geofencing feature, which would automatically lock when your phone exceeded a specific distance from the property. Also, there must be a way to turn off alerts on the phone whenever the lock is engaged, but I have not found it. Many of the settings can only be changed when within bluetooth range. In short, the app is the biggest problem with the lock, and it needs to be upgraded. The lock takes 4 AA batteries for operation other than with a key, and I’m wondering how long they will last when constantly needing to be alert for wifi signals. Time will tell. In summary, this lock could be a godsend for landlords, with the ability to unlock tenant doors from anywhere if they lost their keys, maintain high security when switching tenants, while saving time and labor. Some of those functions are lost when internet is lost, as in a power outage, or when a tenant switches their wifi password. Tenant knowledge of replacement of batteries would also be a necessity.

This is a nifty product that works. This is a standalone dead bolt that will fit on an existing dead bold that you want to remove. Be sure your door lock mechanism meets the requirements. If you are installing a new door then it will not be a problem. This lock requires certain hole and strike plate measurements in order to fit. If you have an existing dead bolt, then chances are it meets the requirements. It took me just under an hour to install the product and then another 30 minutes to install the app, sign up and get it to control the door. The instructions are very clear. There are some options and they make it clear which option you need to choose. It does this by words and pictures and it all makes sense. The software was a bit more challenging. Since this lock allows entry into your home, there are quite a few steps involved in setting up an account and getting security details down. A little cumbersome but understandable. I found that the blue tooth from my phone would not connect at first. It took five or six tries to get it to work. No idea why, but it finally worked. The lock installation and software took a combined time of 90 to 100 minutes. Not too bad. The lock can be unlocked either by entering a number on the outside keypad or by using your smartphone. It is easy to add other parties who have access or to add a person limited by date or time. You can even give just one-time access for a delivery or service person should you desire. The software is intuitive and easy to use. You can also add someone over a date range. As an example, you can give someone permission from January 1, to Jan 10, 2020. You can also give someone access on just certain days of the week. Pretty much anything you want to do, it will accomplish. A key can be used to lock or unlock it from the outside. A phone or code is not mandatory. The keypad does not stay illuminated all the time. It only lights up when touched.
