This Maestro Companion Dimmer is an accessory switch to a master Maestro dimmer, meaning that this model number MA-RR cannot be installed and function on its own and can only work in tandem with a master Maestro device. Many of our products do utilize stranded wiring lead connections, but some like the Maestro family utilize screw terminals for connection to the wires in the wallbox. Hello Kim, thank you for reaching out. We are sorry to hear about your issue. It sounds like you may be using this Maestro Companion Dimmer with an MACL-153M Maestro LED+ Dimmer? If so, and you are experiencing the problem you described, the device likely just needs a simple reprogramming in order to properly communicate with the companion dimmer. See this procedure on page 2, step 9 of the following document:

(Note: this instruction shows changing the programming for use with a mechanical 3-way switch. You will want to change your dimmer's programming to the middle indicator light, number 4, for use with a Companion Dimmer, as noted in the document.)
