Chain won’t stay on.
I was so excited to get this. I used it 4 times. Each time I drove almost 2 hours each way to my camp for nothing. I could not get this chain to stay on longer than 3-5 mins. No matter how many times I take it apart clean it and adjust the screw. Most the time it falls off even before I can use it. Never had that issue with my gas stihl. Leaks oil bad too and mines stored in My house. Less than hour used. I wasted $600 on this machine I would stay away if reliability matters. It cut pretty decent but I’m definitely going back to gas. I wish I had my receipt.

    Best Chainsaw ever!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The best chainsaw I have ever bought. I used it to cut a couple of trees down from my front yard and very easy to used and to turn on.

      Did not last
Great saw until the warranty expired, causing the motor to immediately die. You get one star for the nice green color.

Decided to try electric and I’m a believer now!
Since I have a lot of other Ryobi tools, I decided to try a Ryobi. I chose the 16 in blade, with the chain brake ,40v, 4.0 battery. I had read reviews of it and they seemed mostly good. I bought the saw because I’ve had trees fall on my property, and want to be able to clear a tree immediately if it blocks my driveway. I thought it was good! if you want to go cut a truckload of wood, you would definitely need more than one battery. If you had the extra batteries, or the more powerful one, I know I would choose it. It’s so much lighter and so so much quieter than my gas saws.

          It saws well
I bought this 16” saw because I already have 2 of the batteries so I just had to buy the tool. I bought because trees keep falling on my fence. If you are debating, get the 40v battery type. I am a woman and was hoping this would be easy for me to use but I have to admit it’s pretty heavy and the vibration tired my arms out bad after 2 cuts. My husband cut up the rest of the tree. It only took 1.5 batteries to finish the job. It leaks oil no matter how you set it which is annoying

Happy with the switch to a battery one
I live on over 6 acres, mostly fir trees. I've been cutting up downed limbs or trees from storms. I've been using 16" chain saws for over 20 years and decided to try a battery one. The 16" Ryobi with the 4Ah battery has as much cutting power and torque as the gas ones without the noise and gas mixing. No more leaving it running or restarting between cuts. The battery out lasts me, but I'm 75. It will outlast a tank from gas one. If you need more cutting time, buy another battery instead of more gas. It does weigh a little more than a same size gas one, but that's not a problem, at least for me.

            Powerful and easy to start!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This chainsaw has plenty of muscle to handle tough jobs. With its 40WA battery, it compares perfectly well to using a gas-powered unit, but without the typical hassle of having to prime and pull the rope several times to start it, which is very frustrating with gas ones. Just click the battery on, and you’re ready to go! This a well-designed tool, with adjustable auto-oiling for the chain as well. My only advise is to get a 2nd battery in order to have spare power for longer-lasting jobs.

              Powerful Tool
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After borrowing a plug-in electric chainsaw for storm cleanup, I decided to buy my own saw for future use. I knew I didn't want the maintenance of gas, so I decided on battery electric. A tree fell across a driveway in an area where I didn't have access to power. I was surprised that the battery was able to last to remove the entire tree from the driveway. The chainsaw had more than enough power and battery life for this job and any others I may encounter in the future.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have received it 2 days ago and went to work right away. The battery lasted for a long time; I actually stopped working before the battery was dead. It's quiet, easy to operate, doesn't smell like gas powered ones. She cut through butter. I am very pleased.

Nice and powerful. No pulling off your arm to get it started. No mixing gas.No worring about bad gas or gas gumming up the carb. This saw does still need bar chain oil and I expected it to leak out while in storage but so far it does not. The 4Ah battery lasts quite a long time but I will likely get a 2nd battery just in case I have a job that requires more than one full charge. If you cut trees for a living or all day this may not be for you but for typical home use its a no brainer.

So easy to use right out of the box. The chain removal/tightening tool stay in the handle so it's always there if you need it. Cuts larger logs than expected. If in the market for a electric chainsaw you can't go wrong. Done this whole log pile with it so far this season. (I have multiple batteries)

I have a lot of trees around my house. I need a chain saw for storm cleanup every couple of years. Not frequently enough to maintain a gas chainsaw, but frequently enough that a chainsaw really helps. The corded saw is a little limiting. This one is just perfect for medium use. After cutting up a tree that fell in the back yard I still had 3/4 of a battery left. Chain tension was great out of the box. Note that there is a screw on the bottom of the saw to adjust the amount of oil that comes out. I opened mine all the way. The charger looks small but is actually 80 watts. The charger that came with my leaf blower is bigger in size but only 72 watts. I received this RYOBI 16 IN. 40-VOLT BRUSHLESS LITHIUM-ION CORDLESS CHAINSAW, 4 AH BATTERY AND CHARGER INCLUDED for free to write this review.

Effectiveness, convenience, and no gas exhaust make this a superior chainsaw. Make sure that you have chain saw oil, and add it before use. It is wonderful to have no need for gasoline, which can be inconvenient, messy, and a source of air pollution. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, and we participate in our electrical utility’s Renewable Energy Certificate program. We own several Ryobi yard machines with 40-Volt batteries, and we strongly prefer these battery operated machines over the older gas operated versions. To give this chainsaw a challenging test, we cut a tree stump below ground level. We dug a hole around the stump, and began cutting through the somewhat knotty wood. This sharp and powerful chainsaw got the job done quickly, without any issues. We were amazed by the chainsaw’s performance. After cutting the stump, all we had to do was cover the area with landscaping fabric, apply pegs, shovel the excavated dirt back into the hole, and add mulch. If any new growth occurs, it will not reach sunlight, and the area will remain neat and maintenance free. Great performance, ease of use, and environmental advantages have put Ryobi 40-Volt machines at the top of our list when it comes to yard machines.

Impressive so far. This Ryobi 40-V, 16” chainsaw (Model RY40505, Made in China) is a solid workhorse, at least after several hours of use and one full battery charge. It's a bit heavy, weighing 12.4 lbs with battery and full oil, but only a pound more than a similar gas chainsaw I've used. I used it to clean up downed limbs and trees on the lot, and it cut quickly through tree limbs up to 6” diameter, with no kickback and only stalling once when the limb pinched the blade. The trigger and thumb-activated lock are easy to use. This unit includes the typical “chain brake”, which serves no real purpose other than as a third safety lock ,but it's familiar to gas tool users so probably worth having. I did not need to adjust the oiling rate screw, which is hidden under the chain bar, but it's easy to do. I actually had trouble locating the included tool (wrench/screwdriver) because it hides nicely inside the base of the unit. The included 40-V battery adds a lot of weight, but provided as much cutting time as my arms could handle before the charge indicator dropped to the lowest level. I'd estimate about 30-40 minutes of actual cutting time over nearly 3 hours of clearing. Oil consumption was very modest – I still had half-a-tank when I stopped, and the tank is pretty small. The package came with two battery chargers, a large wall mountable one and a small one that plugs in through an AC adaptor. Both worked well to quickly charge the battery and I could not determine why both were included. There was no chain oil included, which was a shame as I had to go to the hardware store before I could test the saw. I haven't been a fan of Ryobi due to quality issues on prior tools, but this one may change my mind. I don't know how well it would hold up to contractor use, but for occasional use by a DIY homeowner living in the country, it looks like an excellent value.

Ryobi had an earlier version of a battery powered chainsaw that barely cut through small branches. The Ryobi 16 in. 40 volt chainsaw is a far cry from that version. Wow! It cut through six inch branches like butter and kept cutting for half an hour. The noise level was nothing like that from my gas powered saws. Follow the same safety rules for a gas powered saw as this puppy held its own! It has a translucent plastic oil reservoir that allows you to see how much oil is left, something I wish my other chainsaws had. I was also lucky enough to get two chargers. The rapid charger charged the depleted battery in one hour. I don't know how long the regular charger takes because I have the rapid charger. Duh! The charger has a fan as does several other of my larger volt battery chargers so it is not quiet.

To start, this will be a bench review for the '16 in. 40-Volt Brushless Chainsaw' by Ryobi and as far as Ryobi Tools - one could not do better than using one of there fine products. That being said, I have a full line of them for the shop and yard 18v, and 40v 2-6Ah in size. So we have most of the standard features to start - side access chain tensioning, an automatic oiler, mechanical chain brake and on-board tool storage. Now Ryobi has there ' Load-sensing technology automatically adjusts the power, providing optimal performance' this is where we get that Like Gas Power. One other small features is the ability to adjust the oiler and at 16 inches it a good all around chainsaw for around the house or job site. On the bench test, one can feel the power, brake stops the chain, on the spot and it's well balance in ones hands with the center mount battery on the under side - from the side. The RYOBI 40-Volt-4Ah batterie provides long running and the charger is equipped with a USB power source to charge your small electronics while plugged in as well as charge the 40v. I keep one of these small charges inside the house just for that - cell phones, tablets about anything that can be charged using the USB cord. And being here in the Northwest we have our backup light from Ryobi and an inverter with a 6Ah 40v - great charger all around.

As a suburban lumberjack, I've always gotten along with a 16" corded electric chainsaw. I've felled and chunked-up some surprisingly large trees with it too. At times I've even dragged a generator out to the spot, rather than gather up every heavy-duty extension cord. No more of that with this battery-powered saw. It has all the power of the corded saw. What it lacks is the infinite run time. The 4-amp battery is enough for several 'capacity' cuts or a lot of branches, and then you are done for a while. In a pinch, the saw will run off any other Ryobi 40-volt battery you have, but it will draw down the smaller batteries in a hurry. I did not see any warnings about doing this, and the big battery of the chainsaw also fits in several of the other 40v tools. If you have serious cutting to do though, get a second big battery, and the fast charger, which Ryobi tossed in free for me. ( The excellent leaf blower comes with the same 4-amp battery. ) If you have a lot of cutting to do more than once in a while, then you'll probably need more than a battery saw in any case. But if you can possibly get away with an electric, I would strongly recommend it, as every gasoline chainsaw I've ever used was finicky and unreliable - I'm not sure which is worse, cold starts, or hot starts. Either way, you get a lot of practice cursing. Getting back to this saw, I put some oil in it ( it may be electric, but you still need chain oil, not included ) and took it back in the woods to chop up a fallen tree. The one I settled on fell last year, so the wood is about as hard as it could be. The saw worked every bit as well as I would hope. It cut through seasoned wood like nothing. After all the pointless hacking that you can see in the picture, the battery meter still had two bars on it. I usually end these Ryobi reviews by saying that Ryobi tools are home-owner-grade, but I'm going to stop that. All of the Ryobi tools I have gotten in a long time are as good as anything. I don't hesitate at all to buy Ryobi. The included blade cover is a nice touch, the only thing they left out was a little jug of oil to get you started. Here's a free bit of advice - don't let a moving chainsaw blade hit the ground - it will instantly go dull in the dirt. If you need to cut roots, sacrifice a cheap sawzall blade rather than an expensive chainsaw blade.

I have had various gasoline powered saws over the years. It is always a bit of a hassle to get a gas saw going. If I am going to do a lot of wood cutting a big saw is essential. However, there are a lot of times that I just need to limb a tree that I have already cut down or buck up a small tree. I tried this little gem out on a 12 inch Douglas fir that was already in my log yard. I made three cuts completely through the log and had used less that half of the battery. This is better performance than I had expected. By the way, I did not use this saw to cut all of the wood in my log yard that is shown in my picture! I have seen some negative evaluations of this saw and I feel that a lot of them are users who are not familiar with chain saws. If the chain comes off it is due to being inadequately tensioned. Also it is essential to have the bar oil reservoir filled at all times. After making quite a few cuts I left the saw over night and there was bit of oil under it. That is due to the oil leaking not out of the saw but out of the oil soaked chips that are in the chain area. Since this saw is primarily aimed at new chainsaw users it might be helpful if Ryobi included a colorful pictorial quick start guide in addition to the main instruction manual. By the way I have been using the Ryobi fast charger that came with my Ryobi lawn mower to charge the battery since it is a lot faster than the included charged.

The RYOBI 16 in. 40-Volt Brushless Lithium-Ion Cordless Chainsaw, 4 Ah Battery and Charger Included, Model # RY40550 is a newly introduced product to the Ryobi Brand. The Chainsaw comes completely assembled with one 4 Ah Battery and a Compact Charger. It’s not as heavy as a gas model but just as powerful and no more mixing the 2 cycle fuel / oil ratio. The expected run time of a fully charged 4 Ah Battery varies between users. Prior to using this saw I recommend you read and become familiar with the Use and Care Manual with specific attention to the Chain Saw Safety Warnings. Ryobi supports their product with a 5-year limited warranty on the tool and a 3-year limited warranty on the battery.

I have had a variety of chainsaws over the years. Starting with electric and then moving onto gas powered ones. All had their place in my tool arsenal, but they also had shortcomings, whether needing a long cord or having to bring along a can of gasoline. This Ryobi chainsaw meets all my needs without the hassle of needing a cord or gas. I love the weight of this chainsaw, and the battery fits close to the center so you have a balanced tool in your hands. The extra charger is a handy device especially if outside doing yard work. Uses normal chain/bar oil available at Home Depot. With my other saws I always had to go back to my shed for a wrench when I needed to adjust my chain. Ryobi brilliantly added a spot for the tool to clip right into the chainsaw. I have six trees on my property and am always pruning overgrown branches. This chainsaw has made my life much easier. Works great on small to mid sized pieces of wood. Love it!
