Game Changer!
I have been using a gas mower for my entire life and have been debating making the switch to a battery operated one for years now. I was worried the battery ones wouldnt have the power I was looking for and the battery life wouldnt be long enough. Now I wish I made the switch sooner because this mower is incredible! Every time I use it, the mower never goes below half a charge and it cuts my grass even when I let it get way too long. You may take a second to get used to the self-propelled feature, but once you do you will be blown away by how easy it makes cutting your lawn. I feel like its made mowing the lawn turn from a chore into something I look forward to every weekend! If you’re on the fence at all about switching over to this battery mower, you will not regret it.

      Wow!
No more gas for me! Absolutely love how easy this mower is to use as well as how great it cuts. My yard looks like a golf course after I finished. Bring on summer!

        Incredible bagging!
This mower is amazing! Highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in replacing their gas mower. It has a large bag and fills it to the brim with grass! Cut quality was outstanding too. Just under 1/2 acre and I had plenty of battery left over.

I was looking to convert from a gas operated pull start push mower do to a major surgery I had. I was reluctant about converting but once I used the Ryobi 21” for the first time I was convinced I made the right choice. It is well built and has the power and battery life I need to do my yard. After using it several times I gave my gas powered 20” to my neighbor. I have several Ryobi hand tools and very happy I added this mower to my Ryobi collection.

Not gas-like power. I am coming out of a 20-year old Craftsman gas string trimmer with an edger attachment. I was never able to stall the gas trimmer while edging. This thing stalls more often than I'd like it to. I used it to edge (with the edger attachment) around flowerbeds prior to putting mulch down. Every 20 ft or so the edger will be clogged with tightly packed dirt and the motor can't turn. Never had that issue with the 26cc gas unit. The Ryobi cordless trimmer is smoother than the gas counterpart thanks to the electric motor, but not lighter. The powerhead weighs as much as a gas unit with the battery installed. We have a 100ft burning bush hedge that gets tiring to trim with a gas timer (with a hedge trimming attachment) holding above my head. It doesn't look like this is going to be any easier. Furthermore, it isn't very quiet either. While not as loud as a gas unit, with he trim dead attached it is much louder than the Ryobi 40V mower. Unlike the gas units, you don't have to mix gas and oil and deal with the starting issues, clogged carburetors, spark plugs, engine heat, and exhaust fumes. I bought this with a 40V mower and they can share batteries. The battery that cam with it is not adequate to do the trimming, edging and the blowing required for my yard. The 6Ah replacement batteries at Home Depot are slightly smaller and about the same weight as the 4Ah battery that came with this unit. I opted to get an additional 6Ah battery because they weigh the same and can be used in the mower also. But it costs about 80% of the price of this trimmer package. For a small yard this will work fine with the included battery, but you'd probably have to buy extra batteries. Factor at least extra 60% into the price to account for the spare battery. At that point it is hard to match the cost of a gas trimmer unless you have other yard equipment that can share the batteries.

I bought this late last month when it was the latest and greatest - which I now see it is not any longer. This mower could have been great except for some silly design flaws. Pros: -The mower cuts the grass nicely without clumping or bogging down even in mulching mode which is how I use it. -It has decent - but not great - runtime on the included batteries (60-70 minutes max from full charge) Cons: -3 of the 4 "hub caps" fell out of the wheels on my very first pass across my lawn. When put back in place they fell right back out. This is just a bad design of the part. -The handle only has 2 positions - both of which are low for me - so I have to bend over to lift the front wheels which makes turning corners or reversing direction more tedious. It would have been very easy to include more positions with their mechanism. -The self-propulsion uses a simple microswitch for activation - and it has a pre-programmed "ramp" to the propulsion which takes around 3 seconds to reach the set speed. If you let off of the handle even momentarily the mower does a full stop and takes another 3 seconds to get back up to full speed. -The propulsion speed adjustment is in just about the worst place they could have put it where it is easily bumped - and since it has no detents this is extremely easy to do. -The max propulsion speed is too slow. When set to max speed it is about he same as the 3 out of 5 speed setting on my John Deere 14SB which I generally ran on 3 or 4. This makes cutting the grass take longer and is a significant factor considering the limited run-time on this mower. -Between the slow max propulsion speed and the 3-second speed ramp on every pass it takes about 20-25% longer to cut the yard than with my gas mower - which caused me to have to use both 6AH batteries plus a 4 AH battery I have for my trimmer to finish my yard which I timed at taking less than an hour the prior week with my gas mower. -The spring-loaded door for the side discharge is very flimsy and the spring is not strong enough. This caused grass clippings to catch in it on my very first pass - and within a few seconds every time I cleared it - so the mower became a partial-side-discharge whether I wanted it to be or not while in mulching mode. This also appears it could be a safety issue as the door is unlikely to block a rock or other solid objects that might be kicked up by the blade - and with the door held open part way by grass clippings there it little to keep said objects from coming out and hitting people or damaging windows, cars, etc. -The mower has no charge indicator to tell you how discharged the batteries are - so you only know when the battery goes flat - the WORST thing you can do with a lithium-ion battery. Discharging a lithium battery below about 25% cuts its life span significantly. -The supplied charger has a VERY loud fan and took well over an hour to fully-charge a single 6 AH battery. Charging lithium-ion batteries too fast can also decrease their life span so I will probably use my other chargers which have a slower charge rate and no noisy fan. The review above is what I submitted on the Ryobi site (which notably only contains 4 and 5-star reviews) but it has not made it through moderation - and probably won't because they don't want negative reviews. As of that time I had not decided whether or not to return the mower. Today I made that decision when I attempted to cut the yard again. Despite starting with both 6 AH batteries fully charged the first battery ran out less than half way through my front yard. To make matters worse while the increased blade speed feature worked on some of the heavier spots for about the first 1/3 of the battery charge after that point it no longer functioned and the blade would slow and stall on these areas. This is unacceptable. The mower should have the same functionality throughout its operation, regardless of battery charge level - otherwise it is pointless as you would be changing batteries every 5-10 minutes. I put the discharged battery on charge but the indicator almost immediately changed to amber - indicating "Testing" which in the charging manual indicates the battery pack may be too hot or too cold - what in the world does that have to do with testing? - yet the battery pack was barely warm to the touch when I placed it on the charger - much cooler than when I did the same during my initial cutting with the mower last week. This stayed in this state for about 45 minutes before even starting to charge. I completed my front yard using the second battery pack but saw the same issue with blade stalls and the rev-up feature not working past about the first 1/3 of the battery discharge. The grass coming out of the side discharge door was even worse than last time with piles of grass lodged in the door and a bunch of grass blow-by when I was supposed to be mulching. Between the issues noted and the fact that it would have taken over 4 hours to get enough batteries charged to even start my back yard my mind is made up. This thing is going back to Home Depot tomorrow and my money is going into a new Honda gas mower.

              I’m in LOVE
This mower is the answer for me. No gas to buy and SO EASY TO OPERATE. I’ve mowed with gas powered self-propelled mowers forever and I got soooo tired of issues. I went to buy yet another one when i met the Ryobi rep in the lawn mower isle. She was very knowledgeable and convinced me that i needed to give it a try. I’m so glad i did and my lawn has never looked better. I highly recommend.

The Ryobi 21 inch 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Walk Behind Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is the latest and greatest thing in mowers. I threw off the shackles of gasoline lawn mowers a number of years ago and never looked back. Gone are the days of dragging out my yard equipment only to discover I need to buy gas. This Ryobi is a serious looking machine and feels built to last. I have a roughly quarter acre yard, front and back, and this mower can do it all with power to spare. It is rated for 80 hours of runtime with the two included batteries and I have no problem finishing. The key to this power is the brushless motor that creates less resistance, hence the motor runs more efficiently, and doesn’t wear out as fast resulting in longer life. It’s important to keep in mind that the taller, thicker, wetter your grass the harder the mower will have to work and it will affect how long the batteries last. Under normal circumstances I think most people with find this mower and batteries is sufficient for their yard. The deck height is quick and easy to adjust with a single lever and a second lever gives you the option for two handle positions or folded for compact storage. I only mulch when I mow so I have no experience with the bagging or side discharge options. I don’t mow without adequate light so the built-in headlights that can’t be turned off are a novelty feature for me. My one and only complaint about this mower is that you must swap batteries yourself. When one battery is done you have to stop, open the battery compartment, remove the key, and reinsert it with the arrow pointed to the other battery. This key seems like something that can easily get misplaced and the mower this Ryobi is replacing switches batteries automatically. One small gripe Ryobi could easily remedy.

The game changer. Ryobi has stepped up it’s game with its new Hp line of cordless mowers and this one does not disappoint. I’ve been wanting to buy a cordless mower and I’ve tried a few and decided to go with the ryobi. I’ve had the mower for about two weeks and today was the first day I could really try it as we have been under a almost foot of snow. From opening the box it was super easy to set up the lever on the handle to make it fold works like a champ. The height adjustment was smooth with the one lever. Love it comes with a bag, side shoot and mulch plug they all have there place. It comes with two 6 amp hr battery’s that can both be installed for longer run time. Maybe the biggest plus it folds up for easy storage and easy cleaning. The charger has a built in fan that helps keep it cool, its just not the quietest. I checked the rpm with a laser rpm gun and got a constant 2600rpm with no load. Under load the rpm does go up to maybe 3000rpm. If you are looking for a cordless mower I feel this is a great option backed by the quality of ryobi and made in the great USA. They have many 40v tools and more to come.

The one thing I noticed about this lawn mower when running is the noise level being so low. My neighbors are sure to appreciate that. The height adjustment for deck is super simple with only a one handle adjustment for the entire deck compared to conventional mowers adjusting both wheels with independent levers. The self propelling drive has a variable speed feel. The more you pull on the handle to activate the drive the faster it goes. The battery seems to last about a 1/2 hour on a battery which is fine for my yard which is about .15 acres anything bigger can be an issue unless you have extra batteries. The handle design is extremely comfortable and position properly for a person my height of 5'10". It does have a bagger which works great as well mulching adapters in place of the bag. Another plus with this mower is not having to worry about gas, oil or spark plug, just charge and go. I recommend this product for the homeowner who has a small foot print yard and neighbors who complain about noise. Ryobi also backs this mower with a 5 year warranty which is excellent.

This is my first electric cordless lawnmower. I was not disappointed. It is everything it claims to be. It comes in one heavy box but basically all preassembled except for the bagger for obvious reasons. The handle is easy to release for use or storage. It comes with 2 batteries for long life use. It is simple to operate and to adjust. The height adjustment is very easy as well as the speed of the self propelled feature. My wife even says she might cut the lawn with this mower. The batteries are easy to install and charge. You use up one battery and then just reverse the battery key 180 degrees to use the second battery. Just make sure you charge the batteries at room temperature. You can use either a discharge shute, the mulching setting or the light weight easy to use bagger. This mower is well worth the investment at a reasonable price.

As there's still snow on the ground, I haven't yet used this mower. But it looks very promising! This mower comes with 2 batteries that should each last about 70 minutes. They take about an hour to charge. Just pressing a button on the battery will display the relative charge remaining via LEDs. There is a key in the battery compartment that determines which of the 2 battery compartments will provide the power allowing you to easily switch battery sources when one dies. The mower can be used as a mulcher, side-thrower or bagger. All parts are easily altered for the mowing type desired. The cutting swath looks comparable to a gasoline powered mower. Although not overly heavy, it is heavier than a similarly sized gas-powered mower. This mower has drive action and speed control. The handle can be easily folded down to occupy less storage area. The mowing height is easily adjustable by moving a lever on one of the back wheels. This mower runs quieter than a gas mower.

There is now no need for a gasoline mower. This mower does everything a gas mower does but leaves only a small environmental footprint. The mower is made out of heavy duty injection molded plastic that eliminates any rust problems and should prolong the life of the mower. What's In The Box: 21 Inch Ryobi Self-propelled Lawn Mower (Rear Discharge) Two 6Ah Lithium Rechargeable Batteries 40 Volt Battery Charger (Charges One Battery At A Time) Large Grass Catcher (approx. 1.5 cubic foot capacity) Side Discharge Grass Shoot And Mulching Plug (Plugs Rear Discharge Port) The mower comes pre-assembled with only the grass catcher bag that needs to be slipped over the steel frame and hooked into place. The batteries come with a maintenance charge so it takes about 60 minuets per battery to fully charge the mower. You can mow with one or two batteries installed in this mower, a large red key in the battery compartment lets you select the battery you want to run the mower on. Once everything is charged and assembled its time to set the mowers cut height. This is done with a single handle on the right rear of the mower. The cut height can be adjusted from about 1.5 inches to 4 inches. Then you can select the mowers handle bar height to one of two heights (32" or 36"). Next select the mowers self propelled speed, from a slow walk, to a very fast walk speed with the slide switch on the top of the handle bar. This mower is very quiet, you can easily talk and hear over the small amount of noise this mower makes. Think of how happy all the neighbors will be with just a whirring noise. No more gas to buy and no more noise and fumes. And electric mowers start every time, no more pulling and pulling to start a gas mower. I have a large yard that I cut with a lawn tractor but I still need a mower like this one to get into all the small areas where the lawn tractor just won't get to. This mower makes it easy to get from one area to the next with its self-propelled function. Then the fun starts, Follow the 1,2,3 instructions on the top of the handle bar and start mowing. Select the speed that suits your mowing needs and enjoy. Once your done with the mower you can fold the handle bar down and lift the front of the mower up, letting set on the integrated rear stand. This mower folds into a small package that's easy to store up against a wall. The mower only takes about 2 square feet of floor space. This mower even has a LED headlight, not that I am going to be out at night mowing but it gives the mower a cool look. The overall impression of this mower, its very well made, works better / easier than a gas mower. The mower should last a home owner for many, many years with little to no maintenance. And best of all its made here in the USA!

This mower has everything I could want in a mower. It is a 21" cut electric self propelled mower with speed control. Sounds simple...but wait. It has a brushless motor that delivers power like a gas mower, with its Ryobi 40V 6Ah rechargeable batteries. Comes with 2 batteries and 4x quick charge charger. Six Ahs means more power for a longer runtime. I love its push button starting, easy single lever height adjustment, easy bag install and removal, and LED headlights. I can keep going, it is also 3 in1 with mulching, bagging and side discharge with accessories, and an easy adjustable handle. The entire mower is built tuff with great quality. A lifetime warranty on the deck, 5 year tool warranty, and a 3 year warranty on the batteries round it out. When finished mowing, just fold it to store standing up. I wish I could rate it 10 stars. I like it that much. Ryobi and Home Depot have me as a long time customer. Keep the great products coming.

I switched to battery powered lawn tools in 2014 or 15 and haven't looked back. My old Ego mower works like a champ. We moved a few years ago and the new house has a larger lawn with some hills. One benefit of cordless is it's really light so not a big deal. However I think it's time for something self propelled. I've been pretty impressed with the new Ryobi cordless tools so I figured I'd try this out. First impressions are it is much heavier. Likely due to being self propelled. I like the fact you can wheel the mower around under power without engaging the blade. This is a nice feature The cruise control (self propelled speed) has a good amount of range. My previous gas mowers were basically just full speed or stop. I don't like the battery configuration. It holds 2 batteries but only uses one at a time. When one dies, you flip a "key" to the second position. I'd prefer to just have a single battery slot since when one battery dies it goes right on the charger anyway. The handle folds down really easily for storage. I like that the release is up high. This won't get caked up with clippings and dirt The fast charger is much slower than what I am used to. It took about 2 hours to charge a 1/4 full battery to completion. So if you will need more than 2 batteries to finish your lawn, it's going to be a while. It has lights which I wish I could turn off like my Ego mower. I don't mow my lawn in the dark. This is just a drain on the battery. Overall I think I am going to be happy with this for years to come

With the improvements in batteries and my experiences dabbling with battery operated lawn tools I felt it was time to try a mower.  I have a typical suburban neighborhood lot.  We are packed in tight and I need a 22” or smaller mower to pass through the side yard.  This mower’s 21” deck is perfect. It is simple to set up.  Unpack it; charge the batteries; insert the mulching plug or attach the bag or side discharge chute; flip open the handle and you are done.  Adjusting the height is done with a single lever.  It is both simple and has a surprisingly light movement.  The deck can be set as low as 1 1/8” or as high as 3 1/2”.   The batteries were at 2 bars when I received them.  Each of the took approximately 40 mins to top off with the included rapid charger.  It sounds like the charger has a fan in it. I have another 40v Ryobi tool and it’s charger didn’t add a single bar to the battery in 40 mins. You are going to have to use the rapid charger. As it is a single charger, plan accordingly. Mowing is a normal experience. The bail and self propelled levers function like normal. All you do differently is press a start button to have the blade engage. I mowed my front yard using a combination of me manually pushing it and using the self propelled and cruise control features.  When I was done I had used 2 bars worth of one battery.  Based on that I expect to be able to mow my entire yard with the two included batteries.  It cut evenly and moved through my lawn almost as easily as my gas mower.  It did bog in one spot that never slows my gas mower.  I gave the self propelled feature a bump in power and it pushed through the spot.  The wheels had no issue in my lawn and the mower is easily to maneuver.  The self propelled speed is a bit touchy.  I set the cruise control but when I re-engaged the self propel lever, the speed was all over the board.  Sometimes it was what I set it at, while other times it was faster or slower.  Usually slower. When I was done, the mower was easy to clean up.  I was surprised though when I found grass clippings had gotten into the battery compartment.  They do say to wipe out the battery compartment before storing the mower, so it must be in spec.  Storage and maintenance were two reasons I was interested in going to a battery mower.  The handle folds up and the mower can be stored on end.  When set like that it is about 18” deep.  That is less room than my gas mower needed and I don’t have to worry about gas or oil leaking out of it.  An added bonus is that when running, the mower sounds like a vacuum cleaner.  It is quiet enough that I didn’t need ear plugs.  It still blocks out things around me, but not to the degree that my gas mower does. Overall I like it.  The plastic body does concern me.  Only time will tell how well it will hold up. I will say that it adds a bit of dampening that the full metal deck of my gas mower does not provide.  The other item that concerns me is the blade.  It is very lightweight relative to what I am use to.  Hopefully that doesn’t mean it won’t hold an edge or will be easy to ding and throw out of balance.  Again, time will tell.  For now, I am happy with it and look forward to the easy start in the spring!

Having used a Honda lawnmower for nearly 20 years I am ready to be done with filling it with gas and the maintenance associated with gas mowers. My only hestiation has been the lack of power with most cordless mowers. It's the middle of Winter and the grass is still dormant but I am really impressed with the cutting and suction power to pick up leaves while mowing. This mower picked up nearly every single leaf on the lawns during my mowing, so excited and impressed. The mower comes equipped with two 40-volt 6Ah batteries that is more than enough run time to mow both my front and rear yards probably 4-5 times or more before requiring the batteries to be charged. While only a single battery is used at one time it's a good feeling to have the second battery ready in case the first runs out of power while mowing. To change from one battery to the other is the read start key in the battery bay and just flip the key around so the arrow is pointed towards the fresh battery and away you go. The start key must be inserted before the mower will power up. Being self-propelled is another wonderful feature and the speed is easily adjusted from a crawl to a good walking pace. The controls and safety bail mechanism are positioned nicely along the 2 position handle and have an intuitive feel. The blade start button is also located nearby and easy to access. Adjusting the angle of the handle for different heights involves simply flipping the handle lock and also serves to swing the handle around completely for compact storage. Off to the right side of the mower is the large and easy to reach blade height adjustment which makes blade height chances easy and quick. There is an included mulching plug and side discharge chute if you desire to use them, but I prefer bagging all my clippings. The large grippy wheels roll well over small obstacles and uneven terrain. Simply put this is a well engineered lawnmower with good cutting power and suction along with features to help make the transition from a gas to battery-powered mower painless.

I was a huge skeptic of battery powered outdoor equipment when it was first announced a decade ago... but each generation just keeps getting better and better, and I think we're finally past the tipping point where they are practical and powerful enough for most homeowners to use. I have several acres, so we use a farm tractor to cut most of the lawn and a push mower to do close trim work around the beds and structures. So few of the battery lawn mowers on the market are self propelled, so I was very excited to see this one was. The mower is almost entirely plastic and aluminum, so it is very lightweight and the drive motor had no problem moving it - even when I gave it some resistance. The blade startup was instant and came in at full strength, no "slow wind up" to full power like some of the cheaper units I have used. It has headlights on the front which is an odd touch, I really don't see the value or purpose there, but they're LED so I doubt it impacts the battery life much. I can't speak to the battery life because I haven't had an opportunity to run it from full charge to empty charge yet. There is a small key inside the battery compartment that allows you to shut it off entirely by moving the key from prongs 1+2 to prongs 2+3, that's also a nice touch, because it keeps the mower from starting when my kids touch the handlebar while walking through the garage. It uses the same style battery as the rest of the Ryobi outdoor equipment (the 40v line) but it is important to note that this comes with two 6 Amp batteries, not the 4 Amp batteries that things like the string trimmer use. They're all interchangeable, but 4 Amp batteries will give you less runtime than 6 Amp batteries. So if you are planning on using your batteries interchangeably you will need to account for the shorter run times. It needed virtually no setup out of the box, all i had to do was lift it out of the box, flip the handlebars upright, and insert the batteries. Everything else was already installed: wheels, wires, blade... nothing to install. With regard to build quality, it's plastic... but a rugged plastic that should take a beating without shattering. The handle is some sort of lightweight aluminum. It's a nice touch over the standard steel handle. Overall I think this is a wonderful mower for small to medium lots, or touch up work like I use it for.

Powerful for a battery lawn mower. Easily set up and ready to go. Took a few minutes to get the bagger on the frame but fitting tight means it will stay in place. 3 features, mulch, bag & side discharge are easy to switch out. The 2 batteries make sure you have enough power to finish a good size yard. The self propel feature on a battery operated machine surprised me. As soon as you turn it on and get behind it it is ready to go. Receiving in in dead of winter it will be a while before I have grass to mow but we quickly mulched a yard full of leaves easily. The 6 or 7 levels for grass cutting will easy to adjust for when the St. Augustine begins to come up. I have no doubt it will cut the thick, lush grass without any problem. Excited about spring coming. Heavy duty, well designed & thought out. Ryobi never fails with quality equipment.

I’ve enjoyed owning several cordless mowers and this is the best one yet. What sets it apart is its wide 21” cut, the many convenience features and its top-notch self-propelled system. That extra inch over standard 20” mowers seems to be a lot more in actual performance. For example, there’s a little strip of grass between my sidewalk and the street that would always require four passes with a 20” mower, but with this one, it only takes three. I also don’t have to overlap my passes quite as much due to the wider diameter cut. As for design, Ryobi has a great mechanism for adjusting the handle - a simple pull lever located in the center of the handle - just pull it and move the handle into one of the two height selections or swing it all the way forward to store it. The deck height adjustment lever is also an improvement with the addition of a spring powered assist bar. Plus, the grass clipping bag is super-sized compared to others. The On button and self-propelled handlebar controls are the same simple, but effective setup that Ryobi has been using for some time now with excellent results. Performance-wise, I’m impressed with the motor’s power and its excellent mulching ability. With the bag attached, it sucks up the clippings very effectively. There’s no wheel lockup when making the transition to pulling the mower backward. The self-propelled feature works flawlessly using the speed control slider on top of the handlebar to match my pace. This speed control system doesn’t have any response lag - it’s instantaneous. This Ryobi 21”, self-propelled, cordless 40-Volt mower has all the features and power to make mowing my lawn a lot easier.

From the moment I got it home in the box, I was impressed, light weight was my first thought, I opened the box and brought everything out and started assembly, the entire process from the time box was opened until it was ready to mow, 30 minutes max. I was super easy to assemble, no tools required at all. It comes with 2 batteries that are easily plugged in and easy to remove... It even has head light, several safety features that I really like, let go of handle and blades stop. You can use it either side discharge, mulch or bag, comes with all options. everything you need to get mowing. I would have tried it out but raining today so warmer weather will be here soon and I'm ready. Now I need to figure out what to do with my gas mower....Honestly I never thought I would want an electric lawn mower after my experience with one that plugged in back the the 60's.....I've been converted in my beliefs, gas isn't the only choice for me. No more fighting it to start.....Another big plus is I can stand it up for storage so it takes a lot less floor space.

The Ryobi 21 inch 40 volt cordless self propelled lawn mower is a nice piece of engineering. And it is made in the USA! It is February and where I live there is snow on the ground so I can only speak to the features at this point. I did my research and the power in this motor looks to be plenty sufficient. This model comes with two batteries so it is find for 1/2 acre without recharging. The features I love are teh folding handle which is one lever and the handle folds flat on top of the mower. The one hand height adjustment makes life super easy. And the fact that there is no fuel needed it can stand upright taking much less garage space. Please note that everyone assumes an electric mower makes no sound, that is not true. It is clearly a lot less noise than a gasoline mower but the spinning of teh blade does make noise. The only thing I can pick at is the mulching plug is difficult to "span" in. It must span and the directions don't give a clear picture of how that should be. It takes 5 minutes to do that and overall from unboxing you have 5-6 minutes before you can use. So far I am very happy with this well designed mower.

Ryobi seems to be a great mower being winter was a good time to buy being ready for spring. I thing to be aware of the box is heavy and a handful right at 70 pounds w/battery and charger in box. Is bigger that what I was thinking but is ok. Has 2 batteries but runs on only one at a time, so if mowing and battery runs out of juice you turn the key 90 deg and you have power from 2nd battery. Someone on reviews was complaining about handle not being adjustable, but has two positions, I am 6 foot and higher position is great for me & a shorter person you can lower it 4 inches. also like that the mower can be moved up and down like 2 inch to 4 inch clearance and that is why I wanted for higher clearance as hillside to steep for riding mower get rock growing out of ground when it rains is weeds and cant see the rocks unless larger and with old hand mower had to replace blade all the time after running into rocks, with this I can see larger rocks but the little ones that screw up the blade, old hit them this if will not clear I will have seen. Looks like a great buy an love that can get one before all are out looking for a new mower and running out of stock just when one is needed. I did not install the bag like the mulch mode better, so use side discharge and leave cutting on the ground. Dont agree with some bad reviews runs good and even not cutting grass yes sure it will cut great as all things needed to do that are available and sure will do great and is really quite and my dog does not want to fight with it or get tired of it and go in shop and lay down waiting for me to quite

I just mowed my lawn for the first time with my new RYOBI 21 in. 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Walk Behind Self-Propelled Lawn Mower. I quickly unpacked my new toy! The mower itself is 100% assembled. You do have to snap the bag onto the wire frame and then charge the 2 batteries provided. - (2) 6.0 Ah Batteries & Charger. The batteries are huge! It must be a quick charger because it only took about 10 to 15 minutes each to charge. There are 2 battery ports in the mower, so I thought it needed both to run. After reading the manual I found out you can put 2 in and depending which way you plug in the safety key is what battery is in use. You have a big job and run down one battery you just simply switch the key. The self propelled feature works great! You can adjust the speed on the fly or simple let go of the lever to disengage the rear wheel drive. Simple and safe. This model has a bag, mulch or side discharge feature. Mower comes with an LED light in the front. Very helpful when you are trying to finish as the sun goes down. Super quiet being brushless electric. I don't have to run to the gas station for fuel. No nasty smelling fumes either. No pull starting and don't have to get it tuned up with oil change, filter and spark plug. Easy upright storage. One button releases the handle to fold for storage or place in either 2 different comfort position for mowing. I have owned many top of the line gas mowers in the past and nothing compares to this Ryobi for power, no maintenance, ease of use and safety. The list goes on how awesome this mower is. I highly recommend this mower.

It has a plastic molded mower deck that is good for air flow and staying clean from debris. The included catching bag works well for picking up leaves and has one handle removal capability. It has a discharge chute for grass discharge. When you want to mulch you need to put the plug into the catching bag port for optimum mulching. The blade does not have big wings for lift so there is a minimal vacuum effect that is acceptable. The back wheels are both drive wheels and a nice size. They disengage easily for backing up and the mower feels light enough to to make that easy. There is a variable speed mechanism. The maximum speed is perfectly acceptable. The bale for operating the machine works easily and feels comfortable for removal of the catch bag. The two handles for self propelling works so you can pull one or both for easy control. You can self propel without engaging the blade for mobility. There are two 6amp hour batteries that are both carried within the mower but runs on one at a time. There is a key to switch between batteries being used. It is supposed to run for 70 minutes but we haven’t needed that yet. The charger has a fan to keep from overheating. The headlights are always on and is suitable for low light mowing or mulching. It is about as quiet as a box fan if you are worried about noise in a neighborhood.

Overall the Ryobi string trimmer is solidly built and lightweight with lots of power. Brushless motors give you more power and should last longer. 4 AH battery gives a lot of run time. 40volt gives gas like power. A good choice if your planning to buy other attachments. I like the look of the carbon fiber shaft and I imagine that's part of why it's so light. I like how the head part can be detached for other attachments, theoretically saving money from having to buy the motor assembly for every tool. I'm a little nervous on how the connecter at the end of the shaft will hold up over time. It does look to be designed better than the detachable Ryobi trimmer I had about 15 years ago. see picture for details of how the other shafts attach. The grip on the head is a little awkward and the trigger is a little hard to press and lacks a lock button for long jobs. Could get tiring if using more than 15 minutes. The string trimmer itself is very nice with a big 15 inch width. the string sits a bit high up so getting down close to the ground might be a bit tricky. The handle to load the string is a nice and tough. It is very easy to load and the string doesn't get stuck. Comes with a 2nd head for the plastic blades used for cutting thicker tall grass or thin twigs. Makes it convenient to swap the heads quickly

Powerful, versatile, lightweight, brushless electric string trimmer kit with battery and charger. This unit, with max 15" swath, truly competes with my gas Echo for speed and power -- and with a lot less required maintenance. With the 4.0 ah battery attached, it balances nicely, and after 15 min. of trimming down last year's lily turf plants and hostas around our deck, it was still showing more than half charged. It includes the Reel Easy reel with bump-head feeder and winder that allows for easy reloading of the spool (along with fixed string and bladed options) and the carbon shaft accommodates other attachments, including edging accessories and pole saws. The controls aren't ultra refined (the combined safety and trigger, in particular, feel a bit flimsy, and I'm concerned at their longevity), but overall, it's a great unit with a surplus of power, the battery charges quickly, and the five-year warranty offers peace of mind. If you're interested in transitioning to battery-operated yard tools, this is a great place to start. Highly recommended.
