Changes color with skin contact
I used this product to finish a butcher block for a desk and where my arms contact the desk it turned black. Not just on my desk but on my significant other’s desk as well.

    Pay attention, y’all can’t read!
Listen, this is an outstanding coding. You need to follow the directions though! Humidity and temperature are giant important requirements for this to properly cure. And to that guy who sanded it and then said he was upset, but it was pure white after he sanded it? Pal you gotta put another coat on after you sand it, that’s the whole point. It’s an outstanding polyurethane product. It’s been around since the 1950’s for a good reason, it’s good!

      Terrible
Very disappointed with Home Depot. Sale rep, recommended. Bought the best brush , first of all it was all white looked like white glue . So put it on as fast and nice as possible and it showed every brush mark and could not go over or it made it worse . I will have to refinish the table again. Very disappointed !!

PERFECT finish on pine coffee table
Fact: I am a complete amateur. I sanded the paint off of my white pine coffee table top and wanted to protect the distressed/white washed surface with a satin finish. I bought the product and THEN read the horrible reviews… I was scared and almost returned the product. I decided to give it a try anyway and applied one coat with a synthetic brush and it is freaking GORGEOUS!! I am so happy with how it turned out!!! This is a great poly and I can’t recommend it enough.

Just terrible results - Maybe I bought 'old' stock, but, there were small white dots in the can, that went onto my project. Secondly, the coverage was terrible, used 2/3 of a quart on a 30 inch x 6 foot butcher block counter top. Lastly, stroke marks like you wouldn't believe. Wish I could return this product, as I have to start over.

          Horrible!!!
This stuff is HORRIBLE!!! Way, way, way too thick. Goes on so thick it’s white - even after drying for 3 days!!! And following the can directions, when it’s sanded it turns COMPLETELY white!!! My table is ruined so I have to sand it all down and start over!!!

Let's see if we can help! Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is a thicker coating, you want to apply in the direction of the wood grain with one, thick smooth uniform coat. Applying too thick of a coating can hinder the drying process, not allowing the coating to dry from white to clear.

Used on new oak stair treads and risers. Was definitely thicker than the regular product. Very easy to work with and keep a wet edge. Dried to a nice satin finish. Two coats provided excellent build and it is a very hard, clear finish. Time will tell how it wears but confidence is high!

Won’t work with one coat & shows brush
I used this on bare wood table. Thought I could just do one coat as it states (wrong) It says that it self levels (wrong) It would not even level out the brush marks. Had to re-sand and buy the regular polyurethane.

We appreciate you sharing your experinece! For the best finish, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is applied with a high quality synthetic bristle brush. You want to apply one thick coat in the direction of the wood grain and not overwork the product on the surface. Going over the area once it has started to dry or tack up will cause brush marks. If applying over a porous surface, if the product was applied thinner, a second coat will likely need to be applied. We do recommend lightly sanding the surface with 220 grit sandpaper prior to recoating to ensure a smooth finish.

              My wife likes it
You get ok build in one coat and good with two. It dries faster than oil base and cleans up with water. Note that it is fundamentally different from oil-base urethane. It does not impart a "warm" tone and produces less figuring. If this is what you want, you'll probably like it. If not, you should try something else. The sample photo is a "White (pine) board" from HD.

Dries clear- use for flat surfaces
First coat looked good dried crystal clear but used 2 coats for more protection. 2nd coat had a little haze in parts but overall clear. A thick, even, coat leveled off well on the flat surface. I had to touch up the verticals surfaces and edges right away to prevent drips.

                Horrible streaky texture
Even if you follow all of the instructions with a high quality brush, you will get the texture of the paintbrush strokes as your finish. If you go as thick as some people were recommending, you get drips down the side. I did 1 coat and it was streaky, with lines of thick product and lines that were basically raw wood. I lightly sanded it down and just applied a second coat with the hopes of it filling in the paintbrush texture and as you can see in the picture, it isn’t getting any more smooth.

If brush strokes occur during the application, we recommend lightly skimming the surface with the brush to knock these down, smoothing the finish. If you can give us a call at 800-901-0411, we will be happy to help. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Absolutel dumpster fire of a product.
I used minwax high build for years from home depot. For some reason they don't carry it anymore.. Now all they have is varathane The stuff is absolute garbage it doesn't flow out leaves tons of brush marks now I have to redo a whole project and on top of that if you put it on thick it will not dry clear. Do not waste your time or money with this product!

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience, Paul. To ensure a smooth finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane, it is essential that it is applied with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. It is also best to avoid overworking the product on the surface.

Never have I been so disappointed
I bought waterbase poly because it doesn't yellow yet this poly yellows, not just a slight yellow tone, the white is full on light yellow. In the picture the white leg of my board has no poly so you can see how yellownitnis and the picture doesn't even get close to showing the real tone. It's also very hard to work with to ensure you get a smooth finish, if you are working with anything larger than maybe a 16x16 area you most likely will not be able to get the whole thing smooth with no bubbles and it doesn't self level unless you were to lay it on think. This product doesn't stay clear but you should stay clear of it if you want your work to look like it did before you applied not.

That was not the intention. The Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Triple Thick Polyurethane will not yellow as long as it is applied according to the product label directions. A thicker coating than what is recommended can have adverse results. It is important to mix the container and avoid shaking it to prevent bubbles in the finish. Any bubbles that do appear should dissipate once the coating self-levels. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Disappointed - Not self leveling, yellowing
I was told to go with water based poly over oil because you will get a yellowing effect with oil. Unfortunately I chose this product, which is not self leveling, bumpy, streaky and yellowed my resurfaced countertops. I'm disappointed the product that was supposed to protect the finish I worked so hard to achieve ruined it. Stay away from this product unless you are simply sealing wood and don't care about the look of the finish.

That is odd to hear, Kevin! Our Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is designed to dry crystal clear, and should not yellow unless exposed to UV, as it is an interior only coating. We need to know more about the surface material and application process to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I was hesitant on the "triple layer" application. I've never used something like this. It was very easy. I simply loaded up a cheap 50 cent paintbrush with the Triple Thick Poly and slapped it onto my stained handrail. It will look like you're going to have tons of brush streaks, but put it on thick enough and it kind of levels out on it's own. The first handrail I did, I spent too much time working it and it got a bit sticky. The second time, I just really loaded up the brush, splashed it only and then smoothed it out with the brush quickly. Probably 5 minutes in total and within an hour it was nearly dry to the touch. I would absolutely use this again; beats sanding between coats, no bubbles to deal with. Very, very happy with the results!

The thickness of this formula does not prevent less layers but does allow the layers to be easily applied and more even. Also, clean up only took a minute. Hopefully, this will provide additional durability for these corn hole boards.

Had to restrip, stain, and finish the table
I followed all of the directions on the can and applied the coat evenly. However when it dried my table felt awful. It was bumpy and you could feel each individual brush mark. Sanded the table down so that it was smooth once more, tried again, same result. My table was no longer smooth but wavy and crunchy. It was so butchered I had to completely redo the table. I would’ve redone the chairs but I didn’t have enough stripper and I was under a time crunch. I highly recommend doing the normal varathane over this.... that one worked a million times better and was smooth as can be.

That's odd, Ryu! Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane needs to be applied to a sanded smooth surface. It is also essential the surface is clean and dry at the time of application. A high-quality synthetic bristle brush also needs to be used and the polyurethane is applied in the direction of the grain.

Not water resistant - Not for Counter Tops!
This product turns milky white and gets soft if water droplets are left for more than 2 hrs. There is absolutely no mention of this problem on the can. The Rustoleum customer service response instructed me to wait longer for it to fully cure. The can says it takes 7 days to fully cure but this product was applied more than 6 weeks ago so it should have cured by now and is still having the same issue. This is the worst waste of time ever!

Thank you for your feedback, Scott! Due to the more aggressive environment and cleaning methods used on countertops, we do not recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane for use on them. Please keep in mind, water is an aggressive environment for most coatings and we recommend avoiding long term exposure. Trivets and coasters should be used whenever possible on painted table tops.
