Water soluble is ideal for application and cleanup. Works well on uneven surfaces like the found wood I use to produce my artwork. Easily dabbled into small crevices. to seal wood for future application of final finish.

Great sealer
Great sealer. I have used this for years and never a issue. I spray a polyester finish and other finishes by Mohawk. Never had a issue with some of the other reviews. My quests is they are using the product incorrect. Great product and will continue to use.

We appreciate your feedback regarding your experience with the Rust-Oleum Varathane Sanding Sealer. As this is water-based, it appears that it raised your grain slightly, to no fault of the application, but rather the wood species. Generally, you'd lightly sand and apply either another coat of the sanding sealer, or you can apply your product over the top. We will be sure your comments are forwarded correctly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

I did not care for this product. It was supposed to dry clear but it did not. It leaves a very white look. I had to buy a different product.

Let's talk about this, Michael! To ensure the best results, Rust-Oleum Varathane Sanding Sealer needs to be applied within the recommended temperatures and humidity levels. It is also essential that the sealer is applied to a dry surface.

We appreciate your feedback! Rust-Oleum Varathane Woodcare Sanding Sealer can be used under any clear wood finish, including oil-based ones. However, this product is water-based and can be cleaned up with soap and water.

You're going to need hand sanitizer
This is less of a review and more of a help to people who have already used this product and are now scrambling to fix the milky white coating it leaves after drying. To be clear: I followed so instructions and used the sealer under the circumstances (temperature and humidity) called for on the container. Maybe I 'applied too much' as other users are being lambasted for doing by the company, if what I did is too much I'm not really sure what exactly they were expecting of me. If you find yourself with, say, a nice dining room table you had taken a few days to sand and stain and then upon applying this sealer before finishing and are now staring at a milky white finish on your nice stain, don't panic (like I did). Using some simple alcohol based hand sanitizer and a rag you can remove the milky white coating with just a few wipes. I have no idea if this also removes the sealer and don't really care at this point. Don't buy of you're considering and breathe easy if you already have.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Adam. Sometimes when applying the Rust-Oleum Varathane Sanding Sealer, moisture can be trapped between the product and the wood, causing a milky appearance. To remove this, we recommend wiping the surface with denatured alcohol, which will draw out the moisture and clear up the milkiness. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

We appreciate you sharing your experience and providing this feedback on our Varathane Sanding Sealer. The final step after applying this sanding sealer is to sand the surface, which will smooth any grain raise that has occurred. The sanding sealer will prevent further grain raise when a water-based polyurethane is applied after. Water-based sanding sealers and polyurethane are typically used when the color of the wood or stain is wanted to be left as-is, since oil-based coatings create an amber hue on the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Only purchased because there was no Zinsser sand sealer in stock goes on too milky for me and also did not darken wood at but that might be good for some applications but did not seal as good as Zinsser on first coat

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Sanding Sealer. Since this is a water-based sealer, it will appear white in the can, and apply with a milky haze before drying crystal clear. When using this sealer, you are correct that the natural amber hue typical with shellac and oil-based finishes will not occur, as the resin in our Varathane Sanding Sealer cures crystal clear. You can use an oil-based polyurethane over the sealer to achieve this natural amber hue. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

          Absolute Crap!!! Don't buy it
This is thick white goooo that take forever to dry even in the dry climate of Las Vegas. It is ruff raised grain finish on oak and should not even be allowed to be sold. Who are they trying to kid? I will never buy another Varathane crap product again, Rustoleum owned or not it is CRAP!

          Response from Rust-OleumSupportNov 11, 2020
That is not what we like to hear! Our Varathane Sanding Sealer is water-based, so it will appear white in the can, and dry crystal clear on the surface. Due to it being a water-based sanding sealer, it may cause some grain raise when applied to bare wood, but will prevent grain raise for subsequent coatings such as a water-based polyurethane. Sanding is required after application of a sanding sealer, which will remove any grain raise in the process. If a solvent-based sanding sealer is desired, we recommend applying our Zinsser Bulls Eye SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-qt-SealCoat-Wood-Sealer-824H/202070456 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

This did an excellent job of smoothing the wood fibers down that tend to rise when painted, stained or varnished. One hour dry time was awesome.
