A:  Hello, it is not either or. This mail iron pipe (MIP - actually brass) does use national pipe threads (NPT). It's just not tapered. Both MIP and FIP use NPT. So, they are compatible.

A:  It is a male version of nominal pipe thread also known as MNPT which means Male Nominal Pipe Thread. Additionally, there are several photographs and line drawings on the site to assist in ensuring that the connection being attempted is possible with this item.

            Answer This Question

A:  Yes, the Everbilt 3/4in. x 2in. MIP Brass Nipple Fitting can be used with galvanized piping. Depending on your local codes an additional dielectric union may be required. Please consult a local licensed plumber to verify code compliance for your exact situation.

A:  If the threads are NPT then it can be screwed into same size galvanized, however dissimilar metals may cause accelerated corrosion

A:  Junior, Yes. My suggestion would be to make three wraps with Teflon tape AND with plumbers dope. Good luck!

Q:I want to connect a valve to an existing FIP stub which is mounted against a concrete wall where I will not have space to rotate the valve. Are the threads such that I can just rotate the nipple to tighten both stationary ends? Would I need to cut the threads off one end and sweat or sharkbite the other?

                  Answer This Question

A:  No. What you need are two small nipples (one for stub and one for valve) and a union like this to connect the two (which can be tightened without either end rotating): Model# 80532 Everbilt 3/4 in. FIP Brass Union https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-4-in-FIP-Brass-Union-80532/316389729

A:  Not being able to see your installation location, I would suggest screwing a copper or brass threaded to sweat style adapter fitting that would then allow you to install a sweat style valve. Remove the valve stem assembly before heating the valve to solder the adapter and copper pipe extension to the valve. Also, apply ample Teflon pipe tape to the male threads.

A:  It is possible to tighten both sides of the 3/4 in. x 3 in. MIP Brass Nipple Fitting at once but it is not recommended because it would be difficult to get both sides tight enough to not leak. We recommend tightening the ends one at a time, so another method would be needed to attach the valve to the pipe nipple if the valve cannot rotate.
