Q:Must be safe. They’re pretty small.

Answer This Question

A:  yes, the trap does no harm to animals.

by|Sep 6, 2023

A:  If you want to use this trap for kittens, I think you shoud pad the bottom and sides if possible. If they're really small, they could get caught or hurt between the metal squares (paws stuck if left for too long). If you can transfer them to a padded regular carrier quickly, this might work. If you can get the newer version with the adjustable trip tension, I would highly recommend it. Good luck.

      A:  Ideal size for kittens

      by|Oct 14, 2019

A:  I would not use this for kittens but if you are trapping a wild animal then it would be useful to use. You may want to use this for trapping for the mamma cat in this as you can lure her in with leaving food in the crate and once she steps in there is a small metal flat surface that she will step on and this is when the upper door will automatically close on her. Then you can go back and grab her babies. I just think that have kittens in there is not a safe place. Also, about tow years ago I had to buy and set one up for a baby raccoon that was in our crawl space underneath our apartment. So, I tricked him into getting in there by leaving food during the night and day. We eventually released him about 10 miles away from where we lived but this was so scary to deal with. Try using a small box or crate for the baby kittens. (you can email me if you have any questions). Good luck to you!

A:  This trap's dimensions are 17” x 7” x 7”. If they are roughly the size of a squirrel, this trap should be a suitable size. Additionally, we also offer a Feral Cat Rescue Kit for larger cats.

A:  We recommend using a repellent for gopher control.

A:  I've used it to trap a few roof rats and some larger field mice, so I think it should work for gophers. I'm not sure what bait to use for gophers, but if you contact Havahart or check out their site, they must have some info. Good luck.

A:  The cage for medium sized animals will be my choice.

                by|Jun 7, 2023

A:  No, this will not catch gophers as gophers are underground. You can catch squirrels or other small animals. Look for traps specific for gophers or bates with poison. Gas bombs are very effective.

A:  The #1083 I just got had a knob on top to adjust the sensitivity - nice!

A:  I modified the trap to make it more sensitive by attaching a small weight (car lug nut) using duct tape, to the vertical wire on the outside of the cage that attaches to the "trigger" sheet metal panel. A second sensitivity modification is to tape a small piece of cardboard underneath the gray grip handle on the top of the cage. These two modifications allow the trap door to close with only the slightest weight applied to the trigger panel.

A:  This trap's sensitivity may be increased by adding small stones, metal washers, or magnets to the trigger pan.

A:  The only way I've found to make this trap more sensitive is to first make sure that all of the metal linkage points and cable are lubricated so there is no friction. I also set the trap with the handle raised slightly (about 1/4") from the top of the cage, in the full open position. I set this so that it is very close to being tripped by the slightest touch on the release plate. I hope this helps.

A:  I think the Easy Set 1083 model would work fine for you. I've had great success catching a number of squirrels with mine and I have not had an issue with the animal escaping before I get to the trap. It is so simple to set/release with one handle - pull handle back to set/forward to release - and the trap trigger plate is very sensitive.

A:  Only negative is that the wire grid size opening on the small trap (7"x7"x17") allows most rats to get their head through the wire grid & hang themselves. Removing the rats requires using a big shovel & beheading the rat.

A:  This model trap is ideal for rabbits, skunks, squirrels, and weasels. To catch rats, we recommend our Havahart® 17 Inch Small 1-Door Easy Set® Trap (model 1082) or our Havahart® X-Small 1-Door Trap (model 0745) as these traps will help to accommodate their longer bodies.

A:  Better get a large trap -- a medium might be a bit too small.

A:  I used it for not too big feral cat who kept going after birds I am feeding on my yard. It was big enough. The problem was in cat's (maybe opossum) tale. The trap gates does not lock until it drops completely down. In my case the animal's tale was obstruction why the gate could not lock, so animal managed to escape. It's excellent trap, very sensitive. Don't use it outdoor when breezy. Just moderate breeze shuts the gate down; so much about sensitivity. Well, this was my experience I am offering for consideration..
