A:  This KIDDE unit will be compatible with your system. The new unit comes with a new mounting ring and wiring harness (connector plug). If you do not have "Do it yourself" experience, a local handy man would be able to change out this unit in less than 15 minutes. You can watch a YouTube video on how to change out the unit so you can do it yourself.

            by|Oct 15, 2020

A:  The mounting ring is different. The new unit may mount to the same ring but take note of any switches on the new detector. I believe the new mount may have a protrusion to flick a switch or tab on the smoke detector to activate it Changing the mounting ring is not difficult. You probably can use the same mounting screw position with the new ring. Just unscrew without removing the screws, twist the ring from the secure points and remove. Just put the new ring on and tighten the screws again.

A:  Unfortunately, The Home Depot no longer offers the military discount online. However, I have been told they have made online purchases for in-store pickup, and were able to obtain the discount when they paid at the store.

A:  I suppose, because alarm is activated once screwed on

              by|Mar 29, 2023

A:  Hello Are you sure about that date? I ask because it should be year, month, and then day. 4th of July this year would be, for instance, 2020 July 04 but it would be easy to read that as July of 2004. If this alarm is made in 2014, call us at 1-800-880-6788 or contact us on the Kidde Website under the Support tab and choose Submit a Question. Have pictures of the back of the alarm ready to email to us and make sure we can read the model and date of manufacturing on the picture. Also have copies of the receipt or invoice ready to email to us as well. We don't do returns or reimbursements but the alarm would be under warranty and we would be happy to see what we can do to resolve this.

                Answer This Question

A:  Disconnect the suspected detector and use a voltmeter to check for current and voltage on the wiring harness. Chirping maybe alerting you to battery failure because there is no voltage in the wiring. Call Kidde support and be prepared to follow their troubleshooting procedure. It is possible that the detectors are defective.

                by|May 30, 2020

A:  Hello klb, Thanks for reaching out. If you disconnect one at a time from the hardwire and place the unit in your car or garage, and go back to the location with the wires hanging, are you still hearing the chirp? If yes, there is another unit chirping. It will be a process of elimination, so remove the units from the hardwire and isolate them until all of the chirping stops. If you are still hearing a chirp, then it may be a free standing carbon monoxide detector plugged into an outlet or a unit that was put in a closet or drawer with the battery still inside.

A:  Yes, assuming the smoke detector you are replacing has an electrical wire connected to it. If you are replacing a battery run smoke detector, you will need an electrician to run power.

A:  taken from online "jungle" shopping website: 5.0 out of 5 stars This KN-COSM-IBA is an interchangable updated unit that is a direct replacement for the KN-COSM-IB. Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019 Size: 1 PackVerified Purchase This KN-COSM-IBA is a direct replacement for my KN-COSM-IB which decided to announce it’s “End Of Life” fast double chirp every 30 seconds at 3:30am when everyone was asleep. The next day I ordered this new unit and received it on a cold day so I brought it into the house and let the new unit acclimate to the indoor temperature/humidity overnight. The next morning, per the instructions, I plugged in the three wire (Black, White, Red) connector that went to my old unit into this unit and then added the two AA batteries making sure the red spring tabs in the battery compartment were fitted under each battery. The unit immediately went into test mode. During the initial test, it 1) chirps three long chirps, announces “Fire”, chirps three long chirps.... then.... 2) chirps four quick chirps, announces “Warning - Carbon Monoxide”, chirps four quick chirps.... then.... 3) chirps one last chirp which means testing is done it is now ready to monitor the air in the room. The last thing to do was to mount the unit to the mounting plate that was used for the old KN-COSM-IB unit that was still attached to the ceiling. The whole process took less than 3-4 minutes from unboxing to testing to mounting the unit. I do want to state that this new KN-COSM-IBA unit has a slightly different warning /alarm pattern for Smoke, Carbon Monoxide, Low Battery and End Of Life than the older KN-COSM-IB and it is explained in the new owners manual. This new unit has a 10 year life span from the initial power-up sequence. Mine should be good till February of 2029....... Hopefully it’s “End Of Life” warning will be announced during the daylight hours and not in the middle of the night.......

A:  You can try. If it fits then it fits. You might have trouble with how the wire connector fits through the mount opening. Changing the mount shouldn't be that difficult though.

A:  It is always best to keep the Smoke Detector with the base it comes with. In the case of this particular unit the base is set up to activate the Lithium Ion Battery when the unit is installed. If you do not use the base then your Ion Battery will probably not activate and the battery will drain itself eventually. It takes a screwdriver and about three turns on two screws to loosen the old base enough to turn it. They are all key-holed. Take the old one off put the new one on and tighten the screws again. Less than one minute. Always keep the base with the smoke detector it come with. These things are evolving all the time and what was good for one is not for the other.

A:  I don't have the exact answer, but had the same question in mind when I replaced my smoke detectors. Kidde does have various mounting plates, and my originals didn't match. However, these are very easy to swap out if needed, although may take a bit more effort if you don't have a cordless screwdriver. The only caution you need to take is if the screws go only into sheetrock. Then, you might have to deal with stripped out holes, which would be a problem even if the mounting plates do match.

A:  Yes, I believe you can. This model was recommended by our local fire department to purchase and replace the existing smoke alarms in homes. In fact, they came to our neighborhood and went to every house who wanted to participate in having these installed and installed them everywhere they were needed in the house. All the homeowner had to do was purchase the number of alarms needed. Once we are thru COVID-19, you may want to contact your local fire department and see if they will come and install it in your home. I am so thankful for them.
