Q:What kind of cable can I use for Carbon Monoxide Electric Smoke Detector?
by|Feb 19, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello. What kind of cable is unfortunately vague. Our hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on a UL Listed or recognized junction box. All connections should be made by a qualified electrician and all wiring used shall be in accordance with articles 210 and 300.3(B) of the U.S. National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, NFPA 72 and/or any other codes having jurisdiction in your area. The multiple station interconnect wiring to the alarms must be run in the same raceway or cable as the AC power wiring. In addition, the resistance of the interconnect wiring shall be a maximum of 10 ohms.  The maximum wire run distance between the first and last unit in an interconnected system is 1000 feet. See owner's manual for the wiring diagram. Our hardwired units connect to the house wiring with a wire harness plug with 3 wires. If you are replacing older FireX AD, ADC, FADC, FADCQ, FADCM, or PAD smoke alarms with current Kidde alarms, you can use the KA-F2 adaptor, one of the two adaptors in this pack, to keep from having to rewire. You can plug the adaptor into the wiring harness for the old alarm and the new alarm will plug into the adaptor. If you are replacing the older BRK or First Alert models SA4121B, 4120, 4919, 5919, or the 86RAC with the current Kidde alarms, you can use the KA-B2, the other of the two adaptors in this pack, to keep from having to rewire. Like the KA-F2, you can plug the KA-B2 into the old wiring harness plugs and plug our current alarms into the adaptor.

Q:where do you place the battery

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello. This is not an alarm and does not have a battery. This is a set of two different types of wiring harness plug adaptors. Q:Will they work for old 120-1182c or 120-1095d - both numbers are on back of my firex 4618

      Answer This Question

A:  There is no direct replacement for your alarms. That being said, you can use any of our current alarms to replace your older alarms. You will have to take down all of the older alarms before putting up any new alarms. You will have to change out the mounting brackets at each location but that will just take a screwdriver to change out. You will either have to change out and rewire the wiring harness plugs at each location or you can choose to use the KA-F2 adaptors to adapt the old plugs to our new alarms. The adaptors would plug into the old plugs and the new alarms would plug into the adaptors. The model for the adaptor pack is the 21028461 which includes the KA-F2 and the KA-B2 for some of the older BRK/First Alert plugs.

Saved Time, But Hard To Snap In Place
I am in the midst of replacing all seven smoke detectors in my house with four Kidde TruSense Smoke and three TruSense Smoke and CO detectors. Most of my (extremely) old detectors were FireX, and these adapters saved me some serious rewiring. It didn't look pleasant to pull the jumble of wires and wire nuts out of the ceiling and hardwire the connectors that came with the new detectors! My first attempt to connect the adapter to the original wire harness took about 25 minutes and resulted in sore fingers for days. The dang thing just didn't want to snap in place. This problem appears to be a result of the center tab. I'm not really sure why it's there, since it doesn't clip in place like the side tabs. It doesn't appear to provide any structural advantage, and is very much in the way. When I was finally able to get the side tabs to snap into place over the old harness, the center tab was bent pretty heinously. It might have been easier to just cut it off with a hacksaw. After struggling with the second install for several minutes, I learned my lesson and went in search of a pair of needlenose pliers. That made it much easier to get the side tabs to snap into place, and it was off to the races after that. I have now replaced five out of seven. One needs to be rewired, because it does not have a compatible harness (but I already knew that and only bought six adapters). The other is 15 feet up on my vaulted bedroom ceiling, and I have to drag up the 10 ft ladder from the garage. I'll hopefully get around to that before 2021! I was torn between giving this three or four stars, but I opted for four since it saved me from rewiring. I do wish that they sold these individually for FireX or First Alert. I'm going to wind up throwing the six unused First Alert adapters in a drawer somewhere, and that seems like a waste. Selling them individually might have cut the price in half as well.

I purchased new kidde smoke detectors to replace my old one and these adapters make installation super easy. My previous smoke detectors were already hardwired so it literally took minutes to install, i simply detached the old ones attached the adapter and attached the new smoke detectors. I highly recommend buying the adapters for easy installation!

The detectors were easily adaptable to the old installs; the, adaptors worked well too. Much easier than having to “hard wire” the new detectors.
