This did not work as well as we had hoped it would, but we were able to get good results eventually by changing the mixture.
We have been trying for a while to find a good DIY method to match our orange peel texture. We tried different spray cans but were not happy with the results. We tried the Wallboard hopper gun but also were not able to get good results. This option seemed promising because it had many fewer variables than the hopper gun, especially (we thought) not having to mess with the consistency of the material.
We have a Porter Cable 135 PSI air compressor that is rated for 2.6 SCFM @90 PSI. We dialed this back and ran the gun at 60 PSI as recommended. I bought about 20 of the 20oz bags of texture mix at $9 each over several months and did lots of testing but could not get it to produce a good result that matched our wall texture, including running at a lower PSI. Our wall texture seems comparable to the other houses in our area, nothing out of the ordinary.
We were ready to give up and bring in a professional to do this, but we decided to try some more extreme measures to see if we could get it to work. We'd like to be able to do this again ourselves in the future if possible. The two options we considered were to get a smaller compressor and try that or to mess with the texture mix. We decided to try the texture mix first as it was the cheaper and more promising option. I bought a 5 gallon bucket and lid and a 3.5 gallon box of wet concentrated texture mix (for $11). It says to add 2 quarts of water for orange peel, but we decided to add a bit less at first and to add more water if needed until we got to a good result. We had a 5 gallon bucket size mixer attachment for the drill already so we didn't have to buy that. We had a bunch of leftover 2' x 2' pieces of sheetrock to test on, but cardboard or similar would have worked fine also. We also put aside about a gallon of the concentrated mixture in a ziplock bag in case we added too much water and would need to make it thicker again.
We snipped a corner of a ziplock bag and trimmed one of the tips from a texture bag and put it through the hole to do the testing. The thicker the mixture, the more pronounced the texture. This was good because the result from the bags we bought were too smooth, and it smoothed out even more after it dried. After a few tries we ended up with a texture somewhere between the consistency of mayonnaise and pancake batter that seemed to produce the same texture as our walls. Some spots were too "peaky" and had too much splatter, but we found we could correct this to be more to our liking with a wet washcloth after it dried.
We tried to simplify the process a bit by inverting the end of the gun and gluing a tip from a bag to the cap of a milk jug to make a small hopper system using a gallon milk jug. This did not produce a good result, though, probably because the mixture was too thick and didn't flow into the gun very well. It also was much harder to use. So we cut open 5 of the used 20 oz mixture bags that we had saved, cleaned them out, filled them with new mixture, and then double-taped them shut. This is a very messy process. It may be possible to use a freezer ziplock bag instead, but we went this route. Either way it is a big mess.
It was very helpful also to have someone else watching you work and provide feedback as you spray as there is a lot to think about when you are spraying especially when you are starting and don't have any experience. You need to keep the gun moving at a consistent speed and squeeze the bag at a consistent pressure and be at a consistent distance from the wall. It is easy to put too much material in a spot and there is no great way to fix this other than to scrape it off and do it again.
So we were eventually able to get an acceptable match to our texture, so that is a win, but we were not happy that we couldn't get it to work for us using the mixture bags. Maybe this would work well with a different compressor. If that is the case it would be helpful to have instructions that said something about that.

I would give it to Stars for the idea which is brilliant but the texture bags don't allow the texture to come out easily and their expensive eight bucks a bag when you can buy regular mud and use it as texture at $8 a box covering more footage Plus it gives two light of an orange peel no matter how much air you try to reduce it down to for knockdown.

Think twice.
Very messy, hard to control, not finished yet. Maybe better with more practice. The bags go quickly.

First time ever doing a texture wall repair in several medium sized areas. I was able to match the existing orange peel in my Kitchen. First round of texture went well, 90% there. After it dried it was easier to see where it needed more. After the third round, it was 100% good. Just primed today. Can't wait to see how the painted Kitchen looks! But the texture came out great! I can't tell the old from the new.

Tired of using canned texture? This was a worthwhile investment and works well.
It took a few tests to get what I wanted it to look like but I am really pleased with the results. If you have ever had to do a large section and used canned texture you will be pleased with the results that this provides. I wouldnt try to use it for a whole house, but I had two walls 8X10 that I added to my house and they needed texture on both sides. After a few runs i was able to get a clean knock down that I was pleased with and was approved by my wife.
