While i would recommend this product, it definitely did not cover the area as stated on the can. I painted over dark wood paneling and it took almost an entire can to paint a 6 foot section of wall. I picked this one due to no odor and was led to believe it would cover the wood panelling much easier. But after at least 6 coats it is covered and does look good.

The product went over three different colors evenly with one coat. Drying time was great with a very low odor. I like that tinting it to the original color worked out very well.

I have been using this product for years. It is very good for painting over water spots in the ceiling or whatever. I used it this time as a primer to apply latex paint over lightly sanded varnish. The paint stuck perfectly. Use it anywhere to cover stains, or where regular paint won't usually stick.

I have applied three coats so far, water stain still bleeds through. I would expect that from some off brand sealer/ stainblocker, but I thought Kilz was supposed to be worth the extra money. It's not.

Excellent product! I applied it on an old stone basement foundation that had been previously painted without using a primer first. KILZ covered the old paint and the areas where water-spots had occurred over the years. The basement foundation looks GREAT! Thanks, KILZ! Your product is well-worth the money!

KILZ is my go-to primer for interior and exterior jobs. I used it to prime a repair on a rotten bit of a windows sill: I dug out the loose wood, used Elmer wood hardener, then filled it with Bondo, used a wood plane and sandpaper to shape it with the rest of the sill, primed and painted with exterior semigloss latex.

I got this to paint over a flat latex paint. See the photos to see what happened. I called Kilz and they said that I did everything right. Temperature is 72 and humidity is 29%. I am furious and now am looking at cleaning up this mess before I can start to paint again. This product is AWFUL. Thankfully, I turned around and saw what was happening before I finished the other 2 walls.

Using this product as an outside primer to cover the old color. After washing down my house in preparation for the new exterior paint color I applied this product and it was exceptional! I would recommend using this product even if your paint is a primer and paint in one. I wanted to eliminate the old color permanently prior to applying the new paint and this did exactly that! Take your time when applying it and it will be just the thing you have been looking for!

Kilz is always my go to primer for items that already have paint of stains on it. I had to paint some bathroom cabinets that had a horrible paint or antique kit applied to it. the Kilz covered and made the top enamel go on so easy. Turned out to be a terrific job even though it is my first cabinet painting.

Did not stick at all to new drywall that had been completely cleaned and wiped down. Painters tape pulled off this terrible product in huge pieces and now I am left with having to strip the walls and ceiling to remove it all. I have to assume the 5 star ratings were from people who did not personally use this product.

We regret to hear of the negative experience you have had with our product and we would like to help. In reading your review, it sounds like the paint peeled off your wall when you removed the tape. To prevent this from happening again, we recommend removing the tape while the paint is still wet. If you need to remove the tape after the paint has dried though, we recommend scoring the tape before removing it at a 45-degree angle. To fix the coverage you would need to touch up the areas that peeled after you’ve lightly sanded the loose coating off the surface. A customer care representative has reached out to you directly to help and also provide some tips. Kilz

Kilz - The BEST way to transform your kitchen cabinets
We purchased Kilz Interior/Exterior primer to cover our old kitchen cabinets. After hours of sanding, we wanted to make sure we started with the best base possible. Kilz covered the stains and we are ready for the finish coat now. Should last a very long time.

Great product for covering up Ugliness
Kilz is GREAT for covering "ugly" dark painted walls. It covers graffiti and markings. It applies easily with one coat covering up the darkest colored and marked up walls (see photos). I used Kilz throughout the 2,000 sq. ft. house we just purchased.

Terrible at water stains - useless
I'm hoping the sixth coat is the lucky one... I had water damage through a ceiling (lathe and plaster 1920s home). I scraped off the worst parts and re-plastered. I bought Kilz Premium to cover the water damage. It's taken six coats, applied thick, proper dry timed between coats, to cover the stains. SIX COATS?!? I think any paint would have finally covered in six coats. Don't waste your money. The mobile app only lets me add 1 photo, so I'm showing one stain after FIVE coats.

              Perfection/Flawless/Odorless
We redecorated a basement paneling nightmare of a guest room this past weekend and used 2 gallons of White Water-Based Interior/Exterior Primer, Sealer and Stain-Blocker. I am super sensitive to odors, and this had no odor unless you were standing with your nose up to the wall. This dried so fast, it was impressive. This was able to cover paneling with a final helpful application of Behr Ultra Premium Pure White. We won't use anything else!

              covering black and hot pink
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the kilz premium before painting and was able to cover all the hot pink and black. One coat of premium primer is all it took. You can't even tell there was any hot pink ever.

Took care of my smelly situation!
When I bought my house it was a fixer-upper, to put it mildly, it had been abandoned for months at a time with animals let to roam free inside. It smelled like it for sure. I took up all of the flooring, and before it was time to lay down new floor, I sealed all of the sub-floor with Kilz Premium. The lingering odor dissipated and once I did the same for the walls, everything in my home had a fresh clean smell about it and I never have to be concerned again of any unwanted or undesirable scents creeping their way back towards my home.

Didn't Work or Live Up to the Hype
I purchased the original Kilz because it is oil-based and I needed help priming an area that the home's previous owner had sh-lacked with an oil-based paint (in other words, the subsequent line of water-based Kilz products wouldn't do). Kilz is highly regarded and I thought it'd work. Unfortunately it didn't. The Kilz had trouble adhering to the oil-based paint and left wide streaks as it honey-combed and dried in place. I'd heard that all it should take is one coat of Kilz, but three coats later, all that I had was more of a mess. In all, I applied three separate coats of Kilz, allowed each coat to fully dry, and then applied three additional coats of Behr's Premium Latex paint. From afar, the door looks pretty good, but when the light hits it a particular way or you get up close, the door appears splotchy, uneven, and unfinished. I'm not sure how many more coats of Kilz/paint it would take to correct this concern on the door. I won't be using Kilz to help paint the trim and pillars--I don't want to risk the streaks when it doesn't adhere. Kilz may be great in other situations, but I can't recommend it when trying to prime an area covered in oil-based paint.

Response from THD Customer ServiceFeb 12, 2014
Hi Tomk, I did reach out to the MFG for more information on this issue. Please note their response below. We are sorry for the issue, but this is clearly a case of the primer crawling on the surface. It must been an old, high-sheen oil-base enamel...hard as a rock and not easy for the primer to bite into. How did you prepare the surface? If you didn't scuff sand, the primer wouldn't have adhered and formed an even film. Putting more coats on isn't the answer, in fact, it's likely to peel off because the first coat wasn't put over a compatible surface. Ironically, you would have had better results with a water-base primer like Premium because it has better adhesion. To fix this issue, we recommend you sand off the 3 coats you've applied...down into the oil-base paint and re-prime, We recommend Adhesion. We would be willing to send you a quart to try for your troubles. Please contact us directly at ask@kilz.com to discuss this issue further. Hope this helps.
