While we're not certain what debris or dust you're picking up, you can tap the filter on the inside of the drum to knock the deris loose or you can use a brush with soft bristles to sweep out the debris. You also have the option to wash the filter with a gentle pressure of water and make sure it's completely dry before reinstalling. The VF7816 is the general purpose filter that is design to fit some Craftsman brand vacuum between 5 to 20 gals. While we don’t know the model of your RIDGID vacuum, there are 3 type of dry filter that can be used with the RIDGID brand vacuums, for standard or typical basement or garage dirt, you can use the VF4000. For fine dust, such as drywall or cement dust, you must have the VF5000. We also have a filter made of HEPA rated material known as VF6000. This filter is best recommended for picking up pollens and allergens. Lastly, we have VF7000 foam filter specifically designed only for liquid pick-ups or water-borne debris. You may check its dimensions if it matches: 5.38 x 5.38 x 7.47 inches. We’re sorry to learn that it didn’t fit your vacuum.
