The most common reason a lawn does not respond to fertilizer is soil pH. Soil pH must be in-between 5.5-7.5 for fertilizer to be absorbed by the grass. You may wish to perform a soil pH test. Thatch over 1/2-inch thick prevents the nutrients from getting to the plant roots. The grass also may be under stress from disease or insect activity. If the lawn isn't receiving at least an inch of water per week, then the lawn will not green up as fast.

Any moisture that gets in the product will make the granules lump together. When it dries out, it forms hard clumps. If the product is stored in high heat or humidity or gets rained on, this can happen. Another possible cause is the product being stored on a concrete or cement floor or leaning against a wall made of either material. Concrete/cement draws moisture and can increase the chance of moisture getting in the bag. When purchasing the product in person, be sure to inspect the bags for signs of rips or other damage.
