Filtration Performance

There are three main rating systems: MERV, MRP and FPR. In all systems, higher ranked filters offer finer filtration and higher performance. The Home Depot uses the color-coded FPR system.

Finer filters are more effective at capturing impurities but reduce the energy efficiency of an HVAC system. It takes more power to pull air through a smaller mesh. Find the right balance for your facility to protect the air quality and energy costs.

How to Measure an Air Filter

Air Filters: Nominal vs. Actual Size

The nominal size is the measurement that appears on packaging. This size is rounded and will not match the actual size of the filter. An air filter with the dimensions 19-5/8" x 24-3/8" x 4-3/4" will have the nominal size 20" x 25" x 5".

Measure the length, width and depth (L x W x D) of your filter to determine the actual dimensions you need.
