Refund Policy

General Refund Policy

This is The Home Depot’s General Refund Policy for Store and Online Purchases.

Getting your refund is easy.

For the quickest refund, just bring your return items back to the store.

For returns sent to us by mail or carrier, we'll process your refund after we receive and verify your return. It typically takes about 7 business days to process your return.

Once we're done, it may take up to 10 business days for your bank to put funds back into your account.

See Seller Return Processing Times and Bank Refund Processing Times below for more details.

Seller Return Processing Times

This is the average time it takes The Home Depot to process the return once we receive your item(s).*

  • If you cancel your order before it was charged, we release the authorization hold on your payment method.

    • What does “authorization hold” mean? When an estimated amount is authorized on your credit or debit card, your bank temporarily reserves those funds to confirm you can cover the purchase. This reservation is known as an authorization hold and typically shows up as a pending transaction in your account.

    • When am I actually charged? The full order amount is charged to your card only after your order is picked by an associate or shipped out.

    • How long until the hold disappears? After your order is complete, your bank will lift the hold in line with its own timelines. If you have questions about the timing, it's best to check directly with your bank.

* Additional processing time may be required during special events or holidays. ** In-Store refunds issued as mailed checks may take up to 14 business days to be dispatched via mail. *** Online tool rental reservations deposits will be released in full if you decide to cancel.

Bank Refund Processing Times

This is the average time it takes the financial institution to put the funds back into your account.*

* Refunds generally adhere to the timeframes outlined in the above table, though occasionally they may require additional processing time, particularly during periods of special events or holidays. For additional information regarding your bank processing time, please reach out to your financial institution. ** Gift Card payment types will be refunded as Store Credit.
