Is there any way to add handles to these? How does one move them to a different location without handles?

Answer This Question

The Viagrow Plastic Grow bags do not come with handles. However, Viagrow Grow Bags are very durable with 4 mil thick plastic and can be carried by folding and gripping the lips of the bags. Viagrow

Eddiearms: They are big. It took the better part of a second bag to fill it to about five inches of head space. And make sure you've got it where you want it because it's heavy too. I hope that helps, Hannk

It would depends on how deep the root system is of the plant your using and how full you make it. I made a mix of approx. a .75 cubic ft. of Miracle Grow garden soil mixed with an 8 qt. bag of Miracle Grow peat moss and a couple scoops each of vermiculite and play sand. I was able to make about 2 bags that were not all the way full to the top. I did not measure the mixture so have no way of telling you the exact amount. This is just an estimate, but fairly accurate.

      By|Aug 1, 2019

Around 3 cubic feet of soil will fill it to the top.

Best to check prices when you ready to buy. Things change and they offer a lot of different quantities.

When I measure the bag it is almost double your figure. Roughly (bags are hard to get exact) I get 17 x 14 x 19

Bobby: They're rated at 20 gallons, (80 qts) and it has taken about one nd a half bags of potting soil to bring it up to a bout five inches of head space. I'm prepping some fruit trees I'll plant when they go dormant and I'll go with the 20 gallons. I hope that helps. Hank

It was nice to get 10 of these bags. I intend to use them to grow some cold hardy avocado plants in my patio. The avocado trees were being clearanced and we wanted to have a solution that gave us the ability to move the plants indoors just in case we had a couple of freeze days. Once the spring comes back, we can transplant them to our yard so that it has a better chance to survive our next winter.

Got these kind of late in the season, but looking at them these will be great for growing potatoes and maybe some carrots or bulb onions next year. This look like they will stand up to the sun pretty good and will hold enough soil that the root vegetables will have plenty of room to grow. These will also allow me to expand my garden without having to put in more raise beds.

I got these plastic grow bags because I live in a small apartment in New York City. I really don't have the space to grow things using traditional pots whether ceramic or plastic. I was happy to get my plastic grow bags because I was able to recycle my other hard plastic plant holders and not use them anymore. What is most amazing to me is that you can fold them neatly once the plant is big enough not to need a pot and it takes really no space at all. You can fold them down too in case your little plant is small then just unroll it as it grows.

Huge. Put where you want it before filling! The picture is for demonstration only - I have put two five gallon buckets in the bag to hold it up for the picture. It is late in the season so I will not actually use until next year but will give them a shot next year and try potatoes, the bag will be easy to roll down to start then as I add soil as the plant grows simply roll the bag up to contain it.

These 20 gallon grow bags seem super sturdy. I am going to take a tree that we have in the office and transplant it outside in one of these bags. My husband used one to transplant a dying maple tree to his dads so he can try to revive it, it is doing well since the move. I find that you use less dirt if you put some rocks or bricks in the bottom before you begin. It does not sit flat, not a huge deal breaker but it can be a bit tricky to get that square bottom to it. The bags are reusable, they really do make an nice alternative to the traditional planters.

These are sturdy bags with drainage holes in place. They are lined with dark material inside and white outside. Every year I try something new in gardening. This year I wanted more fall crops. My intention is to get some plants ready for containers that are in full bloom now. I will move plants in to replace plants that are going by. Also there is going to be a bed open for converting from Spring crops to Fall. The larger bags will be set up for vegetables and will not be moved far from their planting. I hope to build a cold frame over the group and extend the season.

This is an economical way to get a lot of large growing bags for something like an indeterminate tomato or other large annual crops. I found that this bag did actually hold 20 gallons of soil. I added about 2.75 cubic feet of soil to the bag and there was actually some room left on the top for a thick layer of mulch. It actually seemed to hold about 21 gallons to be more precise. I will point out of of the drawbacks that I saw regarding this product. The bottom of the bags do indeed come to a point rather than being flat. I included some pictures to prove that (with some simple origami skills) you can square up the bag so that it sits flat. If you want to know the type of bag that this is: think of the kind of thick plastic that a large 3 cubic ft bag of garden soil would come in. This grow bag would be similar to just poking holes in the bag that the soil comes in and growing your plants directly in that. Some people actually do that and it does work for the most part. The bag is hard to move around and is extremely heavy. It has not ripped or broken so far, but don't plan on moving this around too much. You may be able to get more than one year out of this, but probably not. Since the sides are floppy, it is hard to fill the bag with soil on your own. Bring a friend. This product does not get full points due to the fact that (for slightly more money), you can get some fabric grow bags that allow for root "air pruning" for healthier plants. The fabric may be a better option for you. These bags are similar to growing in plastic pots where your roots will circle. However, you probably won't find a cheaper option if you are growing a ton of potted crops.

The bags do not stand upright very well. I suppose if you had the dirt all the way to the top otherwise the top of the bag folds in towards the center. also there doesn’t seem to be very many holes. I’m not sure that the plant won’t at some point get root rot.
