Hi Becki! We do not recommend using this as a TV stand since it was not safety tested with a TV on top.
Can this be used as an extension to the 5-shelf bookcase? Is there a way to make it look continuous if added to the top of the other bookcase?
It is not advised to stack products on top of the 5-shelf bookcase. It is not rated to support the weight.

Sauder products are Ready To Assemble furniture. It will be shipped in a flat-packed package and will require assembly.

I do not know the exact weight, but you can definitely fill each shelf with books. The shelves are supported by 4 round metal pegs. Two on each side.
Each of the shelves can hold the following: Top of the bookcase - 35 lbs. Adjustable shelves - 25 lbs. each. Bottom shelf - 50 lbs.
