Questions & Answers

Can a shop vac be connected to the DW735?
ByAug 19, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes, a shop vac can be connected to the DEWALT DW735, typically by using the planer’s dust port with the appropriate hose/adaptor. However, the DW735 manual indicates that the machine is designed for a 4-inch dust collector hose and specifically says it is not recommended to connect a shop vac because many shop vacs do not have enough airflow capacity for the volume of chips the planer ejects, which can cause clogging.

                      Factory Assembly Issue
I have less than an hour of runtime on my planer, and have only put pine select through it to this point. I was taking off a 1/16 when I noticed the plastic on the right side of the planer flex and the rollers stopped working. I started troubleshooting and immediately realized the issue. The drive chain derailed and jammed, and now after putting the chain back on properly the gearbox will not engage Speed 1, likely due to an internal gearbox shear. It appears to be a factory assembly issue, where the sprocket bolt wasn't properly tightened/inspected during assembly. This is incredibly frustrating when I'm just starting to get my woodworking business setup, and something that should have never happened.

A real Workhorse for finishing rough cut lumber
Having built my entire home from the ground up, I’ve learned that a thickness planer isn't a luxury—it’s a requirement for high-quality finishing. I’ve been using this DeWalt planer to handle everything from dimensioning rough-cut cedar for my deck to finishing the interior trim for our Santa Fe door frames. The Two-Speed Gearbox: The ability to switch to the "finishing" speed (179 CPI) is a game-changer. For my interior frames, the finish is so smooth it almost eliminates the need for sanding, which has saved me countless hours on the home build. The built-in blower is incredibly powerful. Because this unit sits on four solid steel posts, the cutter head stays perfectly level. I’ve run 12-foot lengths of heavy cedar through it, and as long as your outfeed tables are dialed in, the snipe is non-existent. As a veteran who values gear that is "Built-Like-A-Tank," this planer is the only option for a mobile setup. It’s heavy (92 lbs), but that weight translates to stability and precision. If you’re building a home solo and need your finish work to look professional, this is the most important investment you can make for your shop.

Great features at a solid price point
I bought this a couple months ago to build a book shelf with. Learning to use it was pretty straight forward there are some great tutorials out there. Overall this is a great tool and I would buy it again. I did have an issue with clearing debris even with a powerful vacuum attached, however to be fair i was removing a lot of material.

A year later and still going strong!
I've been using my DeWalt thickness planer for about a year now, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best investments I’ve made for my workshop. From day one, it has performed reliably consistently, with plenty of power delivering smooth and even finishes across a wide variety of wood types. The build quality is what you'd expect from DeWalt—solid, durable, and clearly designed with the user in mind. It handles even hardwoods with ease, and the blades have held up surprisingly well. I haven't needed to replace the blades yet as it still performing well. One of my favorite features is the depth adjustment crank, which allows for incredibly precise cuts. I’ve been able to get boards to exactly the thickness I want with minimal effort. I was even able to plane and adjust the thickness of a board with one hand while I filmed a video with the other hand for this review. It's that easy! There is also very little to almost no sniping as long as you are assisting your board properly. The only "negative" thing I can think of is the weight as it does weigh almost 100lbs (91.75lbs), so it's best to have a rolling cart if you plan to move it. Although it is a bit hefty, it is still much more portable than an industrial thickness planer, yet this planer can perform just as well with! After a full year of regular use, there are no signs of slowing down. If you're serious about woodworking and need a planer that combines performance, reliability, and ease of use, this is the one to get. Highly recommended!

The Dewalt dw735 comes with many unique features that stand it apart. The most beneficial has been the 2-speed gearbox that cuts at either 96 or 179 cuts per inch. This is unique and offers flexibility for taking larger passes when dimensioning rough lumber as well as the ability to lower the speed to produce a finer finish. On both speeds, the cut quality is exceptionally smooth with no scalloping and is equivalent to a 120grit sanded finish!

                              Consistent, reliable and versatile
I researched this purchase for several months and am grateful I purchased this Dewalt Planer. I'm an amateur woodworker and appreciate the ease of use, quality of planed surfaces, and the elimination of hours and hours of sanding this planer has eliminated. It took a minute to correct snipe on the lead and trailing edges. First, the outfeed and infeed tables from Dewalt helped reduce 60% of that problem. Leveling the infeed, outfeed, and internal tray using the screws on the infeed and outfeed trays solved another 20% of the problem. Using paste wax to keep the trays clean and slick took care of most of the remaining snipe. There is also a small learning curve when feeding to insure the board is flat and level. This will require a little experimentation. A last learning is using sacrificial scrap boards in front and behind. Checking product prior to planing is critical as you may need to use shims to get to a perfectly flat surface. In the end, this planer produces a consistent output. I never realized what a difference that makes when putting together 10 or twenty pieces of wood the same thickness for a single project. It's a game changer. I built a portable table for this planer which simplifies things in my small shop. Plan on doing that, using this product on the ground is doable but painful. Dust collection was one of my major concerns. I have a cyclone attached to a shop vac but found a much better solution on You Tube. I purchased a Powertec Dust Filter Bag for Wall Mount Dust Collectors, 2.5" diameter dust collection hose (10 feet), 4" thumbscrew hose clamps, and a 4" to 2.5" hose cone reducer. This machine outputs a blizzard of dust. This solution eliminated almost all of it. The Powertec bag has a window for viewing dust quantity, a zippered bottom for easy disposal, and is made of a strong, thick material that won't rip. Based on roughly 40 hours of use, here are my key learnings. The quality of the finished product is already at the 200 grit level of sanding. A small amount of touch up work quickly gets you to a furniture grade surface. I made epoxy resin cutting boards and this planer had no issue creating a smooth surface on the epoxy with no marring or chipping. You will need to clean out the exhaust chute more frequently, but this cleaning process is simple with the tools provided with the planer and the smart design of the planer. The machine is loud, but actually more quiet than my cyclone dust collector. You will need hearing protection. Lowering or raising the deck is simple. Lesson learned, using the height indicator can be dangerous. Instead of trying to dial in a 1/16" plane, sneak up on the cut by moving the deck down until your board is snug and then insuring nothing is cut on the first pass. You can then use quarter turn increments to take a small 1/64" at a time off the surface. This will reduce snipe and eliminate the possibility of taking too much off and shutting down the planer. I'm still learning but this Planer has stepped up the quality of my projects. It's reliable, durable, and powerful. On a few projects I ran continuously for extended durations with no issue. My biggest takeaway is the time saved from sanding. With the number of these sold, there are hundreds of you tube videos that help identify alternative uses like joining. Strong buy recommend if you're an amateur woodworker wanting to improve quality.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice machine, ejects wood chips and dust too well, overpowering my dust collector, so it blows out. Also the dust collector adapter broke after three months. Really poor and under-designed. Bound to break. Otherwise I like it, and I owned other makes and types before.

I thought due to the picks and the description for this item that the slide tables came with it. I will have to research now to see why they did not come with. I did take picks of the order and it showed the tables in the item description. Also I did not get the three extra knives.. love the unit but expected to get what I paid for

The planer is great. I followed the directions in the manual regarding snipe. I managed to get the board planed without snipe after the 3rd pass. Before using the planer, disassembled the planer as the manual recommended. I am assuming the planer was tested before being packaged and shipped. There was saw dust inside the planer. I'm hoping it wasn't sold, used and returned. Then sold to me as new and not as a used item. The uncertainty of it being new or used is the reason for the 4 stars.
