can I put a post inside it to make it taller or set deeper into the ground? it doesn't make sense to me that it's made to be set in concrete but comes literally exactly how tall it should be off the ground to start....

The post measures 46.5 inches in height and is designed to accommodate the general USPS mailbox height guidelines of 41–45 inches, measured from the road surface to the inside surface where mail is placed or to the lowest edge of the mail entry, as applicable. However, the installation depth will depend on the height of the curb and the elevation of the surrounding ground. Because the mailbox height is measured from the road surface, the curb height must be taken into consideration when determining how deep the post can be installed while maintaining the required height. Depending on your installation site, setting the post deeper in the ground may result in the mailbox being too low. We cannot recommend inserting an additional post inside the existing post or modifying the post to increase its height, as this has not been tested or approved by our company. We recommend contacting your local post office before installation to confirm the appropriate mailbox height and placement for your specific location.

The bolt hole pattern of the large (B) Elite mail box does fit the pattern of the 46.5" post. So why do you say it won't fit?
