Yes, this box will suffice.
All single gang wall plates will fit this box, but for exposed work situations, our 800 series galvanized covers will fit the best. Ex. 862, 864, 865.
I have done this and it works well with single and two gang boxes. Deck screws work well because they are sharp and easy to drive. Hold the box tightly when you start the screws so they do not pull the box back from the front edge of the stud. If possible, install them so they are not near the connection screws on the side of most outlets and switches.
Yes, I have done this multiple times.
Yes, the side holes can be used. Be sure to use panhead type screws so as to not damage conductors or insulation.
Thank you for pointing out the error on the website. We have updated the image for RACO part 683 on the website.
You can use whatever cover you want. You screw the switch and/or receptacle to the box, then you screw the cover to the switch and/or the receptacle. The cover has no direct connection to the box. HTH
We do not offer a handy box cover in this configuration, and only offer the TayMac WSS-TR stainless steel wall plate.
Because of the way this box works, you cannot use the square or GFI outlets, because the mounting location of the switches in the box causes the screw hole the plate would secure to at the top of the outlet, directly in front of the metal which prevents the screw from going in far enough. If you use this box, stick with outlets and switches that allow center mounted plates.
The 683, with device mounting provisions, will not accept an extension ring designed for 4” square boxes. The RACO 232D box, and the RAC 201 or 8201 extension ring are intended to work together.
No. What you see is what you get. It is 2 1/8'' deep, so there is room to assemble stuff in it.

As long as it won't extend too far, you can use these extension boxes by Arlington linked below, and it should give you the depth needed. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Arlington-Industries-2-Gang-Wall-Box-Extender-BE2-1/202245821 Joseph
