Questions & Answers

Can this gun shoot nails from brands other than Dewalt?
ByMar 6, 2023

Answer This Question

Yes, as long as the nails meet the specifications of the nailer, they do not need to be branded by DEWALT.

I have a bostich brand of nailer that quit working, and now I have a bunch of bostich 16 ga. nails. I'd like to buy this Dewalt nailer, but will it shoot the bostich nails? The bostich would not shoot nails from other manufacturers, it would jam.

What's the difference between a "Straight" finish nail and a Finish Nail
          BySep 18, 2019

          Answer This Question

Finish nailers come in 2 types, straight and angled. Depending on the application and the work space constraints, an angled nailer may provide the best solution to fit into a tight place. If you have an angled nailer you must buy nails packaged for an angled nailer. If you have a straight nailer you must buy nails packaged for straight nailer. The nails are the same after being fired.

A straight finish nailer may not get to all spots an angled finish nailer can reach.

                Answer This Question

Yes, if you are face nailing. The compressor should be rated at 175 psi or less. The operating pressure for the D51257K is between 70-120 psi.

Bought this nailer to replace an old Paslode that crumbled inside and to hard and costly to replace parts. Pretty much went by reviews and I own several DeWalt tools that seem to perform well. Ordered online and bought through Home Depot. Delivery time was exceptional considering during Covid (2 days). Giving it 4 stars because I needed it to finish a trim job so took it to the site and it would not fire the nails. Luckily, I had a brad nailer with me that I used to finish the job. The DeWalt nailer would just shoot a small “piff” of air and no nail. I did not have time to figure out what the problem was on the site, but at home I discovered that the firing pin was stuck. IT would not let a nail enter the firing chamber and the pin would not move. So, I put a little oil on it and used a screwdriver to move the pin back and forth. It seemed to loosen up and I moved the pin up and push the nails in so as there would be one nail in the firing chamber. The nailer was able to fire the nail and several more. I just hoped that it would wear and loosen for the next job. I have not had any problems with it since. The second reason for the 4 stars is that the nails do not slide into the nailer very easily. There is a flat spring that puts pressure on the nails as you slide them in. Once in, you must pull them on through or use a set of nails to push them down into the gun. Not a big issue but keeps it from getting a 5. Also, I would have liked to see the case designed to hold some nails. There appears to be plenty of space to have molded a small block for storage. So far it works good and would recommend it.

Extremely pleased with this unit's performance
Have begun a series of home improvement projects, and knew a finish nailer would be a fine additon to my tool collection. Though I didn't have any opportunity to test any of the units, I did visit a number of stores to at least inspect the units for build, heft, weight and feature set, and the Dewalt D51257K came out on top of my evaluation. Subsuquently, after the unit arrived, i used it on my first job, replacing exterior door trim. Unit performed flawlessly, with no jams or malfunctions. I'll be adding additonal nailers to my armory, and will be looking to DeWALT for those too.

                    Going Bigger with 16GA
All that I've had was a brad nailer. I wanted something that packed a little more punch for slightly bigger jobs. This is fitting the bill so far! I had to change the trigger and adjust the depth of the countersink of the nail. Although both of my nail guns are Dewalt, the 16GA is different that the 18GA as far as how to load and make adjustments. Overall I like it!
