About This Product

At 20-30% of home energy consumption, water heating is typically the 2nd highest energy demand. The Power-Pipe can dramatically cut water heating costs and reduce total home energy consumption by 5-10%. It works by using outgoing warm drain water to pre-heat incoming cold fresh water so your water heater doesn't have to work as hard. The Power-Pipe will typically pay for itself in as little as 2 years, and may qualify for Government or Utility grants. The Power-Pipe's performance has been tested in accordance with the CSA B55.1 standard and independently verified by Intertek. The Power-Pipe is safe for drinking water, requires no maintenance, has no moving parts, increases effective hot water capacity, extends water heater life, and can be used with any type of standard plumbing system and comes with a 10 year warranty. Furthermore, Power-Pipe technology is proven, practical, affordable, and in use in many thousands of homes. A Power-Pipe will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1 ton/year per household in the average family of four.

It seems like it could increase the amount of hot shower water (minutes) available from a small water heater tank. Do you have test results that can confirm the percentage increase in the water heater tank's First Hour Rating of gallons delivered?

Can the drain recovery pipe be installed horizontal?

            Answer This Question

Hello, For the efficiency rating, the Power-Pipe is meant to be installed in a vertical position. It is possible to install it horizontally, however you would lose 1/2 to 3/4 of the efficiency rating of the unit. Thank you.

NOPE. But they make a horizontal model

If the idea is to extract heat from drain water as it falls down a vertical pipe, shouldn't it be heavily insulated? The copper water jacket will significantly radiate heat to the room without it.

                Answer This Question

If a Drain Water Heat Recovery unit is located within the heated space of the home, insulation isn't really necessary although it can't hurt to cover it if you choose to, as while a slight amount of heat loss may occur, it is only really happening when the shower or water flow is exchanging heat. On the other hand, if it is installed in an unheated space, I personally would recommend insulating the unit primarily to stop the formation of condensation, and secondary to minimize the potential for heat loss and or freezing potential depending on your climate and lifestyle.

What sort of drain line could a pertinent amount of heat be extracted from?

                  Answer This Question

I believe most people use these on shower drains to warm up the cold water coming to the shower, so less hot water is needed to have comfortable shower.

                    Answer This Question

yes but it cuts efficiency on half

                    By|Feb 26, 2026

In order to install this in that scenario you would need the assistance of a pump to pump the water to a vertically installed pipe

                      By|Apr 27, 2026

No, the drain cannot be installed vertically.

                          Extended Shower Time
Installed this a week ago. We have a household with 6 kids so there are lots of showers taking place. Our primary goal with installing this was to increase how long the hot water tank will last during showers. During a shower I measured the incoming water temperature at 6.1 degrees and outgoing at 20.4 giving a rise of 14.3 degrees over the 72 inches. On a 40 gallon tank this rise lowers the energy usage to heat the water by about 2.5KWH /tank and shaves about 26 minutes off recovery time for a full tank. Using on average 7 x 40 gallon tanks of water a week for showers at 10cents / KWH this is an energy savings of $91/year. At 2.5GPM water usage and a shower temp of 37 and hot water tank temp of 60 a 40 gallon tank will now last 39 minutes vs 28 minutes. I did notice a very slight pressure drop after installing but I just adjusted our well cut in/out pressures to compensate. Using a diverter shower valve which has a preset temperature for one dial and an on/off for another dial, we noticed a marked increase in shower temperature resulting in us having to adjust the temperature dial down.

                            Works Great
Contrary to other reviews, copper is an extremely good conductor of heat, and has very low heat capacity (doesn't store heat). The heat capacity of copper is 0.39 J/gC while water is 4.2 J/gC, 11 times higher. The copper begins to warm right away, and heat is effectively transferred. I measured it raising the temperature 15C (27F) a big difference coming in at 5C, so we use less from the hot water tank. This will lower energy use and save money.

                              be careful
Because of the way drain lines are tied together this pipe recovers heat from all drain sources. I found the next day after a particularly spicy Mexican dinner the heat recovery caused my water heat safety valve to pop off and flooded my basement. When we eat at that restaurant now, we let it sit in the bowl and cool before flushing.

                                huge energy savings
This made a big difference on our electric bill, saving about 60% on what we spend heating water. It also allows us to move to a smaller on-demand unit as we didn't need as much storage capacity.

I have been in the plumbing business for 45 years and I cannot see the payback in just a few years. Sooooo you must be draining your sink while you are drawing hot water ? The pre heating of the supply water to the water heater would be minimal. I cannot see this even paying for itself before it springs a leak.

Works great. I found it Easy to install. My girls can now take a shower as long as they want and the water heater will actually keep up and has even shut off after 15-20 of them being in the shower!! Best part of all no more running out of hot water after their long and I mean long showers!
