Questions & Answers

I drilled two holes in ceramic tile and it is so dull I can not start a third hole. Is this supposed to be working like this?

Answer This Question

There are too many variables to determine how long the bit should last however you definitely should be able to drill more than two holes into the tile. We recommend contacting our Product Specialists at 1-877-267-2499 so we can further discuss the issue you are having and possible options we have available to assist you.

It should last longer than it does, but the ones I bought only lasted drilling 2 holes. Do you self a favor and get this one instead... http://www.homedepot.com/p/Bosch-5-16-in-Multi-Purpose-Tungsten-Carbide-Drill-Bit-for-Drilling-Tile-Masonry-Wood-Metal-and-Concrete-MP09/301354975

When using Glass and Tile bits, glass that is untempered can be drilled into with no problem. However, if the glass is tempered (heat treated in essence) the glass becomes very brittle and can shatter. Most wine bottles are tempered.

can this be used for drilling holes on bottom of plant pots? i.e., terracotta

          Answer This Question

Thanks for your question. If the pot is glazed then yes the glass and tile bits would work best. If the pot is not glazed then a masonry drill bit would be recommended, like our HCBG25T.

I am using a table drill press. Multi-speed. I have tried a diamond bit (1/16) but it has too much give trying to cut through at a vertical angle. Would this piece work?

              Answer This Question

Thank you for your question. The best bit to use would be a diamond bit. We have not tested our glass and tile bits for drilling into crystals. They are designed for drilling into glass and tile.

                Answer This Question

The Glass & Tile Bits can be used for drilling into a glass bottle as long as the glass is untempered. If the glass is tempered (heat treated) the glass becomes very brittle and can shatter. If the glass is tempered, the manufacturer is supposed to etch the glass at each of the four corners. Also, the drill needs to be ran at a low rpm otherwise the glass being drilled can break. A 1/2" bit would need to be run at 250 rpm or less.

Thank you for your question. We would recommend a diamond hole saw bit like the HDG12 for drilling into a Corian blacksplash.

No. It wore out trying to drill ceramic tile, which is not as hard as granite.

                          sweet bit!!
Needed four holes in a tiled shower for a curved curtain rod calling for a 1/4" bit. Picked this bad boy up, marked my holes, and had all four holes drilled out in less than a minute. It was AWESOME. Made the job quick and easy. It does walk a tiny tiny bit so just take the start a little slow. It does make a mess so put some plastic down for a quick clean up. I used a trashbag and that worked for me. Seriously... This bit is the real deal. Super clean holes too.

Carbide tip chipped upon first use
I am a DIY’r and needed to drill just a few 5/16 holes in tile. I used a regular drill and went slow. Upon preparing to start the second hole I noticed half of the carbide tip had sheared off. I thought Bosch products would be high quality since it’s a German company. However, just like my Bosch kitchen appliances, this bit didn’t last. It appears Bosch consumer products are now just rebranded low quality junk with blue paint. Off to HF for better quality bits.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback and review. We do apologize that the GT400 did not meet your expectations. Be sure during application to allow the tool to do the work and not overly apply pressure with the tool. You should keep a steady hand and enough pressure to keep control of the tool but to allow the tool to do the work. Also, depending on the material of the tile a diamond drill bit may be better suited. For further assistance, you may email us at bosch.tools@us.bosch.com or contact us at 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499) from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST.

I had a horribly installed toilet (closet) flange because the horrible contractors hired by the wife-beating previous homeowner could not drill through the tile and backer board to install the flange to the subfloor. I used this bit and kept is wet. I drilled six holes clean holes and mounted the thing in under 30 minutes. I earlier used Black and Decker glass and tile arrow bits and they worked OK but were dead after four holes. This Bosch cost twice as much but is ready to do lots of work after those six holes. Keep it wet run it slow through glass or glaze, take it easy with the speed and pressure and it will help you do work you are proud of!! Want to hear about technique: I used two layers of masking tape in an X over each hole. Used a masonry bit (no drill) to lightly!! tap with a hammer to break the glaze and mark the spot. "You just tap and turn a little and tap and turn again a time or two." Then I mounted up this mighty Bosch bit and drill only, no hammer drill!!! I put a small circular modeling clay dam around a hole site, filled with water and went SLOW (can you run at variable speed? if not get some control and or a variable speed drill) and LOW PRESSURE. If you are making dust in the water you are making progress. After the entire head drills through the glaze on the face of the tile you can step the the RPM a touch. I keep the small dam full, I pull out occasionally stick the bit in a small cup of water and let the water in the dam run into the hole. Slow and steady keeps the bit cool; water occasionally. If you cannot use a dam (drilling into a vertical wall) just use a wash bottle or a drip bottle to keep it wet and/or wet the bit every 30 minutes. After the hole was through the tile, I used a conventional masonry bit to drill through the Cement.fiberglass backer board and used the Simpson 4 inch stainless screws (thanks Home Depot) to secure themselves into the subfloor. This mounting will last until the room is renovated or until the building just rots. Built to last by a person who cares. There is the false pride of a "professional" who is happy to do it quick and who cares if it falls apart in 5 years, and the pride of a professional or a amateur (did you know that meant lover) who knows how to do it right and does so because they know that they should.

Slow and steady wins the race. Used to drill hole for fan pull chain in ceiling fan light globe replacement. Actually needed much larger hole than this but I started with small hole then switched to larger glass bit after smaller hole was complete. Bit works perfectly if you have the patience to drill slowly and always apply consistent pressure (no side-to-side wobbling). To protect against "skittering" of bit across glass when starting, I taped piece of cardboard to surface of glass first - then drilled through both it and glass. Hole came out perfectly round with no chipping...
