Is it rust proof

how does it open or close?
Hello Susan, There is a steel finger lever located on the side next to the mounting hole that opens and closes the multi-shutter damper on the back of the fixed curved blade face. You may notice the finger lever in the image; it is located on the right hand side between the mounting hole and the first blade, almost on center top to bottom.
It has lever that opens and closes a louvered mechanism behind grill.
Works greatly
Same as all the others, there is a lever on the side that controls the movable (primary) fins. The lever slides easily, and can be set to any position between fully open to fully closed.
There is a handle on the right side of this photo. This opens and closes the fins on the inside.
what is the measurement hole to hole?
Basically exact size of the vent. This size fit perfectly to my measurements.
It is designed to fit into a 10 inch by 6 inch duct boot, with the screws going through the outer flange of that boot, so it would measure approx. 10.5 inches from "hole" to "hole"
