I would say it would make for better suction however it possible wouldn’t matter due to the power in this little plunger.
It's not defective. Just crappy. Mine did the same thing. After the slightest bit of pressure, it came off.

Hello Doc-Very good question. The HDX311 has a 4 1/2 inch diameter base at the bottom of the plunger, from black flange edge to edge. The inner diameter on this is 3 1/2 inches.
