Answer This Question

Overkill unless you are making for an extremely heavy person - I’ve always used 1X4, not 2X4 -

By|Jul 13, 2020

A little much for bed slats - I’d use 1 X 4 instead

Believe it varies but as long as minimum of 96 no problem - I used for walls so measured and cut prior to use. I always measure prior to use

        1 1/2 “ x 3 1/2 “ x 8’. Ruff cut 2x4s from a sawmill are 2”x 4”.

mot, What a great question! Sorry, I don't have the answer, but you could contact someone at the Oregon State University Wood Science & Engineering College of Forestry Lab. Their phone number is (541) 737-4257. Or email: thwoodscience.oregonstate.edu. Ask for the Emmerson Lab and you can tell them that someone from Sierra Pacific Industries sent you. Note: the specie is either Douglas fir, or Western Hemlock. The Lab is named after our founder. I hope this helps. --- R.W.

I had to sort through the entire stack of 2x4s to find the 45 I needed: ones without splits, cracks, bananas, or large knots missing in the edges. The ones toward the back of the stack had a higher percentage of good pieces (probably because they had not yet been picked through), but overall I would estimate my reject rate at 40% to find 2x4s with enough integrity for my project-- 5 feeders for large sheep. Positive: great price!
