About This Product

The Oatey Toilet Base Plate is a stain concealing system which gives a finished look to a new toilet installation. Toilet Base Plates may be stacked by using the aligning pegs molded into the plate. By stacking the plates, you may overcome the problem of a toilet that rocks on a hub that has been set too high.

Questions & Answers

Please update the product height in the description to reflect the actual height of less than 1/4 inch. You have 1 inch listed as the height and that could waste a lot of people's time if ordering according to that info.

Answer This Question

This Plate is 1/10" thick. There appears to be an error on the Home Depot website. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.

I was not impressed with the Oatey base plate right out of the package. It is made of low quality plastic that was flimsy, when it could have easily been made with thicker plastic that was sturdier. Installing it is not difficult so to speak if you know how to remove a toilet, but the alignment marks they have are a joke. It would be better if they made it to where it slips over the bolts. Once installed, the finish product looks cheap. After installing it and putting the bowl back on, we chose to remove it.

This is a standard feature you often see in remodeled bathrooms. Typically, remodeled bathrooms replace sheet vinyl flooring with ceramic tile. The tile + cementboard is thicker than the old vinyl flooring and this means that flange has to be raised. But inexpertly laid tile is often far from level, and this helps mount the toilet securely if you've already invested in a flange extension. Very occasionally, you see people removing old ceramic floor tile and replacing it with newer, much thinner porcelain tile. In that case, this is a natural fit.

Toilet base plates are a good item to use in a pinch on a weird floor; you never know what you're going to find before you pull a toilet. Plate can cover up nasty grout lines, caulking, and a bunch of other issues when dealing with a new toilet installation. These are excellent when pulling a square toilet and replacing with a round one. I do wish that the plate was a bit more rigid, as I have had situations where it bends and looks funny under smaller toilet bases. Usually, some clever shim work and a caulk job can rectify this, but it's time consuming nonetheless.

The round nose toilet base plate should serve as an adequate cover for stool changes that leave stained flooring exposed around the replacement unit. The idea presented in the basic instructions that multiple units could be used as shims to match the seating seal with the lower floor seems like a good use for this unit. As a single unit, I don't think that it would support a rotted floor although it might if several units were adhered together.

I needed to raise my toilet up by about a quarter of an inch. This plate did that job well but looked like a very cheap fix. I didn't like the appearance of the plastic sticking out from underneath the toilet. I then attempted to cut the plate to make it closer to the base of the toilet but it was difficult to cut and chipped very easily. In the end I had to cut it smaller than the base of the toilet and caulked around it.

This toilet base plate works well in places where you need added coverage on a toilet perimeter area where the floor has damage, discoloration or where a smooth take off is needed to hide defects in an existing floor from any pre existing damage. the base adds clean defined lines to an otherwise difficult installation. I would suggest laying out the base before final toilet installation to insure that the particular base fits the toilet chosen.

This was useful when I re-did the floor in the bathroom, and found that I'd made the floor about 1/4 inch too low for the existing closet flange. I was able to use this product to raise the toilet by about that amount, and save having to remove and replace the closet flange. One caution is to caulk around both this (to the floor), and the toilet (to the base plate), to avoid moisture buildup under the toilet. This thing saved me a whole lot of problems, saved my bacon!

This is a little pricey for what is essentially a flat piece of plastic, but it does what it is supposed to - mainly covering stains, marks, or non-matching flooring that was under a previous, larger toilet. I have not used it to lift a toilet. If you are just replacing a toilet and keeping existing flooring, it can offer a good aesthetic compromise.

It's a nice product, but it would be even better if Oatey made this in different thicknesses. You have to buy multiple plates to achieve the thickness you need.
