About This Product

The Shop Fox W1669 34" Benchtop Radial Drill Press boasts a 1/2 HP motor that smoothly powers the five spindle speeds ranging from 550 to 3000 RPM. Can anyone confirm that this will be suitable for finishing an 80% billet aluminum lower when using an x y slide vise and a drill press lower jig?

Answer This Question

Hello and thank you for your question. We would recommend using a Milling Machine or Mill/Drill for this application: Shop Fox M1111—6" x 21" Deluxe Variable-Speed Mill/Drill or Shop Fox M1116—Variable-Speed Mill/Drill with DRO,

You could make it work.. It'll be more time consuming but you can finish lowers with drill presses only though mills are recommended. Personally, I find it a bit ridiculous that shop fox is trying to recommend a 2k and up mill.. When the question asker is looking at a 400.00 press. Seriously? Whose going to buy a 2,000 mill just to finish an AR lower.

The machine is robust but it it has some serious engineering shortcomings ! In order to change the rotation speed one has to loosen the motor. This is not an easy task since the bolts are nearly impossible to reach. I found the thinnest possible wrench and it barely fit in!! This is not good!

Assembly was straight forward and the drill performs really well. It is quiet and has the flexibility that I need.

              No warranty
The collar at the top of the table housing broke after 18 months of occasional use. The product has a two year warranty. The parent company refused to honor the warranty because they could not find the Home Depot order number in their system. I spent hours on the phone with them. So frustrating. This is way too much money for something cheaply made and unsupported.

We understand your disappointment and apologize for the inconvenience experienced. It's important to note that all products are always covered under the warranty period. However, for us to proceed with a warranty claim, we require the order number, as all Home Depot orders are stored in our system. If you happen to locate the order number, please feel free to reach out for assistance.
                delivery process has been horrible
I have been given 3 different delivery dates— if this had a negative star rating home depot would get at least a negative 3 stars because of how disorganized they are. I have not received product yet so this is just a review of HOME DEPOTs terrible customer service.

Seems solidly built and test of the spindle runout was less than 0.0005" (half a thou) - pretty good for a consumer machine. Picking it up at Home Depot instead of paying shipping was a win several ways around. Would recommend for a serious hobbiest.

Versatile machine, poor packaging, high cost
Overall average value for the money, satisfied with performance. Versatile machine that goes beyond what an ordinary bench top drill press can do. The rotating head allows for unusual drilling angles as well as grinding, buffing, and other shaping work. Speed range is good with an easy to adjust belt/pulley system. The cost is higher than other drill presses and shipping is expensive. The box arrived damaged with the interior styrofoam packaging completely shattered. Large parts were loose in the box. Assembly is straightforward with simple tools. Instructions are less than complete but adequate for someone who understands basic assembly. Adjustments and controls are as expected and relatively easy to operate. The base table adjustment is not explained in the instructions so you need to experiment to get it to tilt sideways. Motor is a single speed and not subject to electronic speed adjustment so 500 rpm is the slowest rotation speed available with belt/pulley system. Bolts to secure drill press to workbench are supplied and recommended as machine is asymmetrical and massive (90 lbs). Very satisfied with precision and performance in a variety of operations.
