Do I need a primer

Answer This Question

Hi Alexa, thanks for reaching out with your question. Yes, before applying our Cabinet, Door & Trim Paint, we recommend priming the surface using a primer like our Behr Kitchen, Bath & Trim Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer No. 75. Once the primer coat is dry, you may apply your new coating. Have a great day! -Angie

We ordered a dark navy blue bathroom vanity from Home Depot. It had some scratches in it by the time we had it installed. It’s a unique color. The manufacturer of the vanity did not disclose the name of the color of the paint so we brought in small piece of it to have Home Depot match. The paint staff and color matching tool worked well. We were able to successfully touched up our vanity. I would recommend this product and Home Depot in their help to solve our issue.

                  Cracks/Crazing over any caulked surface
I bought this paint to paint doors and window casing. Paint looks great. Levels great, goes on great. But it cracks over caulked areas. I don’t care how thick or thin. Wide joints, cracked, thin little hairline joints to fill seams on trim where boards meet. Cracked!!. Now I have 3 gallons of this crap. I’m a builder and have never seen anything like this. I’ve spent multiple hours trying to figure out what could be wrong. The amount of money this has cost is ridiculous. Take this crap off the shelf. Been a behr user for a long time, maybe not anymore.

Hi there, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the paint is cracking over caulked areas. I can understand your disappointment. If you're using a silicone caulk, the paint will not adhere. The paint can be used over paintable caulk, once primed. We appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly for further assistance. Our Customer Care team is happy to help! -Giovanna Behr

Amazing durability /needs multi coats .
I just used this Bher cabinet paint in the shade Broadway on my super old interior bedroom and closet door . The finshed result isn’t amazing but that’s mostly because the house is super old, I didn’t have time to prep the surface as well as I would have liked mainly because the previous owners slathered the everything in the house in gallons of paint and they didn’t do the best job either and also because the doors really probably just need to be replaced . Due to theee factors and because the doors were in once a teen’s bedroom and had some neon paint and friends names written on them years and years ago . So I would have liked to have replaced the doors but I don’t know how to do all that and I figured slapping some paint on would be the quickest fix just to make things look better than it was . So I am happy with the end result . I must say I also have never painted cabinets apt doors before so I was not familiar with this type of paint . I had actually thought I was doing something wrong because it seemed like when I first put the paint on it seemed it was no adhering and whenever I’d apply some it would come up in spots that I rolled over awhile applying . I had also prior to painting used a bondinb primer (this is nkt a typical primer it was a clear primer which is used to almost seal the surface to keep the previous coats of paint from peeling or chipping and so the new coat has a better surface for the application to avoid that from peeling in the future ) the doors are super old and all the old paint layers are Luke have been too much to remove but a good bit of it was just falling off and peeling off like butter prior to applying the primer so I felt it was necessary to use something since I did not strip or sand the surface of paint prior and due to it chipping. (The bondimn primer I used was Zinssers clear peel stop clear bonding primer) I thought the primer was causing the paint to seem like it was not adhering properly but i believe it is just this type of paint needs more than one coat or multiple coats at least 2 , it was a very thick paint as well and slippery maybe because I used semi gloss . But it threw me off so just a heads up to anyone using this it takes a few coats to achieve full coverage , I am not super thrilled with the way the closet door turned out I had thought that maybe it I used a paint brush on the whole surface it would give it a better coverage but i think i prefer the look of the foam roller application Because the brush did apply it super thick where as the roller gave it a thinner more even finish so I orefer the way the finish came out on the first door as opposed to the closest door but overall I’m not going crazy . I just wanted to slap some paint on to camp things up and this definitely did the job and it does provide a very thick durable finish that I think will hold I’m up very well in high traffic areas for years to come for anyone who is concerned about that . Overall I’m happy with the result given my situation and circumstances and would highly recommend this paint .

A disappointed. Not worth the effort
I had high expectations for this paint, but it didn't deliver. I used it on my window trims to give them a fresh look, ensuring they were thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Since the original paint had dark scratches, I anticipated good coverage. Unfortunately, even after four coats, the results were disappointing. I usually rely on Behr, but this particular version was a letdown. The coverage was so poor that I might have had better luck with whole milk! Hoping the first can was defective, I purchased another quart, but the results were the same. Given the amount of effort and multiple coats required, I wouldn’t recommend this paint—it’s simply a waste of time and money.

Hi Emad, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry to hear about the coverage trouble you experienced with our Cabinet, Door & Trim Enamel. That is not the experience we want for our customers. The paint should cover a primed surface in 1-2 coats, but drastic color transitions may need extra coats for uniformity. I'm concerned that the performance was not what you expected compared to your previous positive experiences with our paint. Please reach out to us directly so we can learn more about your project and assist you further. We hope to hear from you soon! -Lina Behr

Very easy to use and cures well. It’s a different consistency (thicker) but has great coverage.

                        Color is not as pictured
This is listed as navy blue, with a picture shown of the color, like a darker moody blue (which is what I was going for), and it definitely came out as royal blue. Very annoyed and disappointed.

                          Beautiful Color
Compass Blue is a beautiful color but not as dark as you would think from the sample card. Made my door look new.
