Approx. 3 inches (little less than 3 to be more exact) across the middle of the base against the wall. Its hung on the wall already so I can't measure to the specific exactness of it.

It comes with a plate and two screws and anchors. The supplied anchors assume its going into plasterboard. If you are going into wood just use the screws if something else then you will need to get an anchor suitable for that wall type. Place the plate on the wall and mark where the anchors will go and then drill starter holes. Attach the plate to the wall and then put the towel ring onto the plate and use the supplied Allen wrench to tighten the bolt into the base of the plate to lock it into place. The last bit is a bit tedious since you have to pull the wrench out every half turn. However, its a good firm fit when its done.
