I started staining unfinished click ready cabinets with this and don’t like it. I want to switch to paint. What do I need to do? If I need a primer, which one?

Applied (oil) stain. Still tacky (wet) after nearly two days. How long should I expect to have to let this dry?

        Answer This Question

Hi Todd, thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that the coating still feels tacky after two days. I recommend cleaning the surface with mineral spirits to see if this helps the tackiness subside. If the tackiness remains, then it is best to remove the stain and reapply following the spread rate. Please reach out to us directly for further assistance. Our Customer Care team is happy to help! -Giovanna

              How to apply
              ByJul 2, 2026
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Hi Lally, thank you for your question. Once the wood has been prepped and the Pre-Wood Stain Conditioner applied, you would apply the stain with a brush or clean cloth in the direction of the wood. Allow 5-10 minutes for the stain to penetrate and achieve the desired color. Then, remove the stain that has not absorbed into the wood with a clean cloth in the direction of the wood, while blending light and dark areas to obtain uniform color. To darken color, apply a second coat after 1 hour. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

I had a shelving unit built in my mudroom, and I bought this stain to use on the bench portion of the unit. It turned out beautifully! The product is high quality, and the color was exactly what I was looking for.

                  Not for red oak
Eh not ideal for red oak. It turned out too light and pinkish. I will need to darken before applying top coat seal
                  by
Great color, I used it to tone down a rattan bed and the color was perfect! A golden hue without red in it, subtle. No fumes or offensive odors and dried quickly as well. I topped it with the antique white glossy water based poly from the same brand and the piece came out perfect!

                    RUINED MY PROJECT
Hands down the worst product I have ever used. Behr water based stain dried so fast that it left streaks everywhere. I'm so mad I could scream! And it's not gloss. Dull and lifeless.

                    Response from BehrJun 8, 2026
Hi Miss Cat, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the streaks and that the stain didn't have a glossy finish as you expected. As it turns out, this stain does not have a glossy finish; however, it can be topcoated with our Water-Based Polyurethane for a glossy appearance. To fix the streaks, I recommend scuff sanding, cleaning off the dust, and applying a new coat from one end of the board to the other. Be sure to maintain a wet edge to prevent more brush streaks. Our top priority is ensuring our customers are satisfied, and we are eager to help you get your project back on track. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly for additional support. We look forward to hearing from you! -Christina Behr

                      Horrible stain.
BUYER BEWARE! The true black looks nothing like what it shows even after testing. It applies close to what it shows but continues to darken dramatically even after being wiped off. We applied to hardwood floors in a house we are remodeling. Looked good when wiped dry. Came back the next day to check on it before the poly top coat to be put on and it darkened to the point of looking like matte black paint! The floors are ruined at this point and I'll have to sand multiple layers again to try to fix. Very deceptive product and nothing like what it's supposed to look like.

I used the product as a white wash on an old oak floor. Used a belt sander to sand floors and also had to hand sand. It turned out nice and also sealed with a Home Depot product. We sealed it with two coats of floor sealer
