Questions & Answers

Can it be used to repair small dents in a metal door
ByJun 12, 2026

Answer This Question

Thank you for taking the time to share this question, Ron. We appreciate the opportunity to help. Our High Strength Spackling Compound is designed for repairing holes, cracks, and surface imperfections in drywall, plaster, and similar interior surfaces. While it can adhere to some metal surfaces, it is not specifically formulated for repairing dents in metal doors, and it may not provide the durability or flexibility needed for that type of repair. If you need any help with our 3M Products, please don’t hesitate to contact our team at 1-800-364-3577, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CT. - CV

Haven't found a product to be used on exterior wood panel beside Bondo or Epoxy product. I would not use this product on exterior, it doesn't bond strong enough. I would go with Bondo.

                      Super strong
I use this for cracks in drywall, between cabinets and walls, etc. Also applied is thick to resurface our windowsills. This was the first time I've used a spackle that changes color. The tub doesn'tseem to seal tight so it might not last long. I'll buy in small amounts in the future. Plus, I'll store it in air proof plastic. Love it. This spackle dries very hard when fully cured but it also sands easily. 3M High Strength Hole blue

Easy to use and does a quick visible repair
The 3M High Strength Hole Repair 32 fl. oz. Color Changing Spackling Compound was great at repairing some dents and other damages caused by our pets around the home. It was cool to see the color changing as it dried. The repair was quite sturdy and changed white when it dried. I am thrilled at the results, the ease of application and peace of mind that the repairs are done.

                      Works great
3M High Strength Hole Repair 32 fl. oz. Color Changing Spackling Compound is very easy to use. It works best for small dents, dings and holes. When applied it is blue but after it dries it turns white. Make sure your surface is clean and dry before applying. Stir the container a little then apply with your finger or a putty knife. Once it turns white it is ready to sand and paint.

Great invention -- blue turns white when the spackle is dry and ready to paint
This is a great invention. With two active boys, I've done lots of spackling over the years. I like the fact that this spackle can be used both indoors and outdoors, it's high-strength, and when it changes from blue to white you know it's ready to sand and paint. It's a nice-size tub -- not too big, but enough for thousands of small jobs. It spreads easily and the blue color makes it easy to see where you've put it and if any crumbs fell on the floor. Highly recommend.

                      Better than expected
I wasn't sure about this product. I have used color changing compound in the past and was not that impressed. But this one works great. When you open, the compound is purple in color. When I took some out with a plastic putty knife, it was drier than expected. It seemed like it might be difficult to work with; like working with old/dry spackling compound and having it crumble and fall everywhere. To my surprise, the seemingly dry compound spread easily and did not make a mess. When applied it retains it's purple color. After about an hour or so, the compound was white, signaling that it was dry. One deeper hole took longer to dry, but it was easy to tell because it was purple in the middle and white along the edges (until it dried completely white). Good product. No gimmick.

                      Easy to apply
This 3M High Strength hole repair has a unique feature... it goes on blue in your application, but then turns white after it dries. This is similar to some paint primers that I've used. I like it. The contrast makes it easier to see when applied. It is claimed to not shrink, crack, or sag, and can be used on the following surfaces: drywall (wallboard), wood, plaster and stucco. It can be sanded and/ or painted over when dry, and the color change when dry will let the user know when to sand/paint.

                      Quick and Easy to use!
Frequently have a need to have some spackling compound on hand to repair small picture hanger nail holes as well as nicks in drywall. Saw the 3M Hole Repair Color Changing Spackling Compound picked up some. First thing I noticed and liked is that it is in a square NOT round container. Makes it easier to use right out of the container. Easy to use…just open container and it is ready to use! My first use was to fill in a couple of small nail holes left when a picture hanger was removed. The lavender color makes it easy to see where you have applied the compound. As the wall had a typical orange peal finish that is commonly used here in Florida, I did not totally remove excess…so when it dried it had the orange peal finish look. Pleased and recommend the compound!

                      Love this!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is unexpectedly great! I had been using a regular white kind and after using this I don't know how I ever used anything else. It also made my job quicker because I wasn't waiting around wondering if it had dried or not. I really think people will love this, everyone from a home DIYer down to a commercial contractor. I'm so excited about using it that I've been going around my house and my garage looking for places to fill. I will definitely tell everyone about this. It's made my bathroom remodel a little bit easier and I'll take that!

                        Ready to use hole repair
I used this product to fill in some holes from a moulding repair. The end result was pretty good, but there are some issues folks should be aware of. First, the good things. The color changing feature is worth using this product. What may seem dry to the touch may have interior uncured product which can result in depressions. This product maintained a light blue color even after the surface was dry to the touch. It also sands similar to other drywall mud products. It is quite clumpy and requires a little bit of work to make the product smooth enough to use. When I first applied it, several small pieces fell off my knife and I had to clean them up. Before the next application, I give it a little knead using the side of the container and it was much easier to apply. Overall the finished product look about the same as any other repair. I was happy that I didn't have any depressions that required additional attention, and the feathering/sanding made for a seamless fix.
