Questions & Answers

I am putting this on a wood table that has several drawings using bleed proof markers. Will this cause bleeding brushed on?
ByApr 24, 2026

Answer This Question

Trish, happy to help! Lacquers, including Rust‑Oleum Watco Lacquer Wood Finish, contain stronger solvents. Because of this, we recommend testing in a small, inconspicuous area first, as some marker types may react when exposed to solvents. It’s also important to allow the markers to fully dry before testing. For best results and added protection, we recommend applying three coats. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

      Answer This Question

We appreciate your interest! Rust-Oleum Watco Lacquer Wood Finish can only be applied using a good quality bristle brush or applicator, it cannot be sprayed. If sprayed it will cause the coating to dry before reaching the surface leaving an undesired texture on the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

It will need to be thinned but yes it sprays beautifully when properly portioned with thinner.

            Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Donald. While Rust-Oleum Watco Lacquer Wood Finish provides a durable finish for wooden surfaces, it is not a food safe coating. This should not be applied to any surfaces that will potentially make direct food contact. The only food safe product we offer is Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Watco-1-Pint-Butcher-Block-Oil-in-Clear-241758/316130833 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Deft lacquer is getting harder to find especially in gallon cans so I tried this Watco instead. Very happy with the results. Put six layers on the project in the picture. Thinned with lacquer thinner about 25-30 percent.

Always like using WATCO Lacquers, it has been a mainstay of my small business. Still trying to find the sweet spot with air sprayers with the gallon drums, the spray lacquers have been lifesaving. RNR Woodworks KY

                    Bad product
This product is the worst lacquer that I have ever worked with. I have been restoring a 1914 craftsman for the last few years which requires thousands of feet of fir refinishing. Home Depot used to carry DEFT in the gallon size, and it was incredible: consistent, applied smoothly with multiple coats, perfect "satin" sheen as advertised, and rock solid. HD stopped carrying DEFT (gallon sized), and so I tried this "substitute". It is very poor quality, gums up the brush or roller, is very inconsistent in texture, the "satin" is almost a gloss, brings lower coat air bubbles to the top, and leaves a very unimpressive finish. I will be sanding this off and purchasing DEFT again from another store.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience! To ensure the best finish with Rust-Oleum Watco Lacquer Wood Finish, we recommend using a good-quality bristle brush or applicator. We do not recommend using a roller to apply this product. Heavier coats or improper application methods can cause bubbling with the finish.

Good solids content with brilliant flow characteristics. Once stirred, lacquer was ready to shoot. I used 70 mesh filter for shooting cabinet and doors. What made this even better is drying was quick!

Excellent product. Drys very quickly, a few days until fumes are gone, not as scratch resistant as poly, but looks nicer I think.

This product is amazing. I recently purchased it to finish a custom made piece for a client and I have to say I loved it. I sprayed it using my HVLP spray guns and it laid down great. The finish is ultra smooth and I was able to get multiple layers sprayed down in 1 day. Worth it. I will definitely be using it again in the future.

                      Ruined my product
After coating it turned my project white. This has cost me over 700 in product ruined tried to sand it out to save them and it was hours of work to not be able to save them. The picture is one of the rails of my project.

Let's see what we can figure out. Watco Lacquer Wood Finish can dry to a hazy white finish if applied too heavy. We recommend applying multiple light, even coats for the best finish. Give us a call at 800-901-0411, so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.
