Questions & Answers

The Sakrete quick drying concrete that I bought says to add 6 inches of gravel in the bottom of the hole but since this hole is shallow do I skip that?
ByApr 10, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest in our products. The 6 inches of gravel is recommended to help with drainage and provide a stable base for deeper installations. If your hole is shallow and you're unable to accommodate the full 6 inches, you can reduce the amount of gravel or omit it, depending on the situation. For shallow holes, the priority is making sure the post is set firmly and level in the concrete. If possible, adding even a small layer of gravel (a couple of inches) can still help with drainage, but it is not required for a shallow installation.

Is the bracket sold separately? I have an existing pole and need the attachment and new mailbox but all the mounting brackets I am seeing are not for round poles. Thanks!

While we don't recommend any other use than as a mailbox post, the Bristol post kit includes the following parts for assembly: 1 - Post, 1 - Mounting plate, 1 - Decorative base, Screws and hardware. The post is constructed from aluminum and the diameter is 3 inches. Please see the assembly instructions for a detailed part listing. Hope that helps!

                  Great mailbox post
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great metal mailbox post. The hight is approximately 4 feet. It is stable and sturdy. I did not put it up at this time as someone does need to drill my concrete but once that is accomplished I will look for a mailbox that fits the post. I recommend it. Thank you!

                    Super sleek
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My mailbox is in need of an update, so I'm so glad I was sent this! It's super lightweight, and very appealing looking. I like that I don't have to replace my actual mailbox to use this post, and I'm really excited to see the final product

I had bought a mailbox and it was looking for the post to mount it on. So this item was just what I was looking for. It was relative they easy to install, came with all the items for the installation included with the package, so that was necessary was to dig the whole, secure the post with concrete and then secure the mailbox on top. Now I have a brand-new mailbox!

My wife bought a 1960's mailbox from a garage sale a number of years ago and I did not want to put it a top of a wooden post. The Gibraltar is a light weight post that was fairly easy to assemble. I used a drive gun to tighten the nuts that hold the bracket to the post. As for the mailbox I had to drill for holes through the bottom to mount it to the bracket. It took me about 20 minutes to assemble the mailbox to the post. This product was assembled in the USA.

Had this shipped to me & as you can see looks like they used it to beat back violent dogs or something. Well made, seems to have a good coat of paint, but being made of aluminum rust will not be a problem. It is made to set into a good amount of concrete, since it only calls for 11 inches to be in the concrete. I, like many in the country, will use several bags of concrete because my mailbox is on a ditch bank. I do have the green house number sign to attach, I may need to use a couple conduit clamps to wrap around the pole. Made in Taiwan, so that’s good.

The GIBRALTAR MAILBOXES BRISTOL UNIVERSAL, ALUMINUM, TOP MOUNT, MAILBOX POST, BLACK in color is the perfect replacement pole to use when you have the unwanted need to replace your mail box pole. The instructions are good for the install of the pole. The paint on the pole is flawless and connecting it to a mail box is relative easy. The instructions recommend using cement, if you replace the pole I would insist that to secure the pole from being a loose pole in the soon future with the mail carrier day after day pulling on the door.

Beats using a 4x4 post any day! Ten years ago I helped my good neighbor brace and repair his thirty year old 4X4 mail box post. The bracing was expected to last months, ten years later I happened to notice his mail box and post were both tied to his local telephone pole, looking pretty sad. Home Depot offered me this product to review. I could not think of a more deserving neighbor. My neighbors are very happy, I would buy this product without hesitation.
