Questions & Answers

I’m repainting kitchen cabinets do I need to do anything to the cabinets before painting
ByJun 29, 2026

Answer This Question

Hi Sange, thanks for reaching out with your question. Before painting your cabinets, I would suggest scuff-sanding the surface with a medium-grit sandpaper to enhance adhesion and then thoroughly clean the surface with a damp rag. Once the cabinets are clean and dry, prime your surface using our Behr Kitchen, Bath & Trim Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer No. 75 and allow it to dry before applying your new coating. Good luck with your project and should you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us directly. -Angie

Is this paint suitable for toe kicks under the base cabinets in the kitchen? Semi-gloss a better choice? Currently toe kicks are black, and we've been happy with them, but they need a new coat of paint and we are unsure what to use.

I went based on the samples they have on display on the side. This color does not look anything like the samples once you buy it. It literally looks gray. Now I’m stuck with 1 gallon of paint I can’t use.

Very even coat, beautiful neutral dark color
This paint was for some furniture flipping we have been doing. We used it in a Wagner 590 spray gun and it applied on the nightstands very even. The dry time was about an hour to the touch and under 2 hours to recoating. The color was just as pictured and service at my Home Depot was very polite and knew exactly how to help me when I wasn’t sure, they’re always very helpful!

Behr paint has been my go to for years now but this is the first time I used the cabinet, door and trim paint. It didn't disappoint. The paint went on smoothly but not as nice as the Marquee line. To be fair, I was painting over a primer for MDF. Brush clean up was quick and easy. I had to apply two coats due to the dark tint. When hanging a shelf the side of the cabinet got scrapped but the paint had not cured. I have had no problems since, with normal use.

DO NOT BUY!! IT DOES NOT LEVEL PROPERLY!!
JUNK!! The leveling with this paint is horrible! I tried to paint with it about 6-7 times with different rollers, brushes, airless and HVLP sprayers. None of these methods would leave a smooth finish. Always left roller marks or bubbles. It was sanded very smoothly between each coat too. It dries too quickly to properly level. The room temperature did not matter. Even a cold room in the evening didn't help. Even though it's not recommended, I also got desperate and tried Flotrol, but that didn't help either. Don't waste your time and energy.

Hi Felix, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the paint. That's not typical, and I can understand your disappointment. It sounds like the paint was drying too fast. Adding 4 oz. of water per gallon will help slow down the dry time, and provide more working time. We appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance. Our Customer Care team is happy to help! -Giovanna Behr

The richness of the color is fantastic. I bought unfinished cabinets from Home Depot and then used the suggested primer as the base coat. I ended up doing 4 coats because I’ve never painted cabinets before and wanted as smooth of a finish as possible. It worked out really well and dried quickly so the process was not as daunting as it sounds.
