Can this be locked to run or does the trigger need to be pulled? Can this be used hands free?

Can you sharpen knives with this sander?
sure can, I'd use one of the finer grits and keep it at the correct angle.
It may be possible, but I don't know how you will hold the knife and the tool and at the same time without securing the tool or knife in some sort of device to hold them during the process.

I generally sharpen scissors and outdoor tools with this. You can sharpen a knife which would require additional honing with a sharpening stone or other method.
I guess you could sharpen knives with this sander, I use a stone to sharpen my knives. This sander is great for tight spaces and small items, like it.
I use this to shaper my bandsaw blades on my sawmill and would feel comfortable to shaper a knife with it. It might be difficult to find fine enough sandpaper though 400 grit or so.
