will this siding fit into the frames of an old air conditioner?

I have an air conditioner that works great but it's over 20 years old and the side panels are destroyed. I have them duct taped. I want to replace them. The frames are fine but the vinyl inside is completely destroyed.

Are these panels meant to replace the original extenders on window air conditioners, or can they be connected to the extenders that already exist? I have a small upstairs bedroom I want to cool with a window unit but my window is 50 inches wide. Every unit I've looked at says the maximum it fits is 36 inches. Any ideas?
