Is this the same as a #1051 Essick Air Filter? (model ED11series)?

Yes, this seems to be the same model

Approx how often do the filters need to be changed? 1,250 sq ft house.

You could replace them annually. One good solution is to take a picture of a new one to compare to one you are considering replacing. I had not realized how dirty my old filter was until a close examination.

The 1051 is the *Optional* Air Filter for the Bemis-Essick Air (AirCare) line of whole house Evaporative Humidifiers. This filter is thin and slips into four slots over the air intake on the back of the big humidifier. The first season we continued to operate "Bemis" without a 1051 Air Filter installed as per the previous homeowner. This year I performed the yearly maintenance per manual. I found a LOT of dust, dirt and scale inside the unit... The system got a cleaning, a new 1041 Wick and the addition of the 1051 Air Filter for the first time before putting it back into operation. In use about 2 months so far. The first layer of this filter is a white dust filter. The second layer is of odor scrubbing charcoal impregnated material. No unit disassembly is required to add or change out this filter. This filter should cut down the dust and dirt passing through the humidifier unit. Anything that claims to scrub odors as the air passes through is a plus. The white filter will give us an indicator of the dust in the air. When it gets caked or discolored we know it's time to change it. The manual states the addition of the 1051 filter WILL reduce the per day humidification capability and you can hear a difference in the airflow. However in our application the units are operated far below their maximum humidification capabilities. After finding a filthy mess inside while cleaning, it's desirable to keep the dirt out. I was impressed by rave reviews from long term users of these machines so a week after bringing Bemis back online we moved him up upstairs to our second floor; greatly improving our sleep quality, plus added an additional NEW unit with more modern controls that uses the same 1041 Wick and 1051 Air Filter for the 1st floor. Very Pleased so far, meets all expectations.

Works great and lasts far longer than I expected it would in the Air Care humidifier unit but, is within manufactures life specs. Also, I have the optional air filter on the back of the Air Care unit which I would also recommend top be used with it.

Wasteful
Why does the plastic frame need to be part of this? The filter media is all that is needed, the plastic frame pops apart so fresh media could easily be replaced. Give us just the media not the cheap plastic frame so even shipping and storage costs would be reduced. Unable to test the quality of the filter media but I’m looking for similar media but there is no MERV rating for the material so who knows if it is really that efficient. Environmentally unconscionable product as distributed.

Hello, JackD! The wick is made of paper, it is not a HEPA filter so it will not come with a MERV rating. Since the wick sits in water, a frame is needed to keep it erect so that the fan can pull water from it to create humidity. If you have further questions about how humidifiers should work, please contact our Customer Service Department at info@essickair.com. Thanks! -Melissa, AIRCARE
