Yes, that should work. I have used these for decades professionally, and update as need arises, always been good tool to have.
No. Long answer, I have used them with adapters, along with 6’ hose when soldering large diameters of copper, but an expensive way for small projects. Map or propane tanks are best, and keep tips clean, and all parts right.

I've NEVER heard of any store taking back anything but the barbecue style propane tanks. The tanks for this or any torch are NOT refillable. Put the (truly) empty tank in your recycling - it's scrap metal at that point.
