Check , clean and reseat the test leads. If you have a spare set of test leads, try those. And the other possibility is that the batteries are dying, dead, toast. Auto-ranging meters tend to be quite sensitive to low supply voltage.

Can you test batteries (such as AA, AAA, 9-volts, etc)?

Yes, it will work on both AC and DC.

everything I've tried on the meter works, but...
The temperature meter is supposed to go up to about 1800F. I stuck it under the lid of my wife's kiln to see if it was heating correctly. It was set at 1100F. When the meter got to about 1000, the cable insulation caught fire and burned off. The meter might read up to 1800 but it's going to need a different kind of wire insulation to get anywhere near that high.

Bad manufacturing batch???
This is a really nice meter except for 1 fatal flaw - the leads do not connect securely. In fact, the COM lead wouldn’t make contact without jiggling the lead. And they’re not slightly loose, but very and is obvious. I figured this was just a one-off so I returned it to Home Depot to exchange. HD had only one on the shelf and it was obviously a return because the plastic pack was cut big time and taped (excessively IMO) back together. Nonetheless, I took it to Customer Service and had them open it because I suspected it was returned for the same reason I was returning. Bingo, this one was exactly like the one I had. Actually, it was worse. There are a lot of very favorable reviews and I can’t imagine one would find this product a quality product, or even minimally acceptable with the lead problem. Therefore, I can only assume this is a bad manufacturing run. But even so, I have to rate based on my personal experience and, based on that, I would not buy this meter.

This meter does everything I need it to do. The no contact outlet voltage checker is a plus and makes it so easy when checking multiple circuits not needing to break out the leads. Lighted display is a bonus and great for those who have trouble seeing unlit displays. It is not a classic Simpson meter but it does what's needed to be done!

Bank for your Buck
I bought this as an upgrade to an entry-level analog meter. I do hobby, low-voltage Arduino and minor home projects. For the price, it's hard to beat the functionality of this unit. In addition to continuity (audiable), voltage resistance and current, you can measure temperature, diodes and capacitors, plus some other less common things. The touchless voltage detector is a nice touch that I haven't seen much in this price range. Doing mostly low current, I wish it had the option to default to DC, but I may be in the minority there. Auto-ranging and digital readout helpful for newbies. This was a huge help in safely changing a three-way light switch to single-pole, and I could not have confidently diagnose the issues I encountered without it. The next time I upgrade, I'd look for a little sturdier construction (chassis and leads), a lighted display and ability to test transistors. However, it's hard to complain about all the things this can do for a reasonable price. If I need to deal with high voltage, high current or high precision, I'll hire someone. The price, quality and precision are all just right for what I do.
