AnswersAre you refering to the stops for the depth adjustment rod? That is solid but you adjust the depth by revolving the stops at the different heights. ?The only thing moving up and down is the chassis on the two rods that slide up and down from the base.

Great router. Worked well, I used this on 3/4" plywood. I made the mistake of putting the motor in the plunge base with the adjustment ring on. I jammed it so much that I had to destroy the plunge base to get the motor out. At least I can still use it with the fixed base router .
The grips are very comfortable and I had full control of the router, I did not feel it getting away from me.

Love this thing. Smooth and powerful, no matter what I throw at it. I put it in my makeshift table as soon as I got it, and while I haven't used it without the table yet, I'm sure it'll impress me just as much when I do. I'm no pro, so this is about as much as I can tell you...it's a good purchase if you're looking for a powerful router to put in a table.

Have used this router in both the fixed base (installed in router table) and plunger configurations a number of times for hobby woodworking. So far I have been very pleased with the features and performance of the router used both ways. The soft start is very useful in reducing the start up torque when used in plunger configuration and in both plunger and fixed base to reduce the AC power surge. The plunge action is quite useful once I got used to that mode.

I have gone through Hitachi, Porter Cable, Makita, and Milwaukee routers. The DW 618 is a professional grade unit. I build cabinets and furniture for a living. Every Dewalt router I've owned has outlasted the competition. This one will be no different. Both bases are very simple to setup and use. I currently have the fixed base in a router table and the plunge base for every day routing. I believe the 618 is the ideal router for 99% of routing tasks. I plan on buying a couple more when the need arises.

Very versatile router combo kit. Soft start plunges easily into hardwood and matched with router bits and Dewalt edge vaccumn attachment has made this a desireable woodworking tool.

I actually haven't used it yet but I can already tell I don't really like how the base attaches to the router. My previous router was a porter cable and the simplicity was what I liked best. I may change my mind after I start using it but at first glance it seems more complicated than it needs to be.
