A:Â For softer materials, a backing washer would definitely help in distributing the forces. I used this riveter to repair an aluminum ladder, and I added stainless steel backing washers on both sides. One picture is the top, and the other is the legs.

A:Â I'd recommend using a washer on the back side of the joint to provide a bit more bearing surface. The rivet expands when it's being set, but not enough to prevent pull out in plastic.

Just one minor issue
Works well; the swivel head is convenient when you're riveting in non-standard positions. The main project I have used this for was to install 38 rivets onto an aluminum ladder. The minor issue I had was the lever to keep it closed; the rubber broken (got snagging while riveting). I fixed it by drilling a hole through the handle, and putting a piece of paracord through it, and made a loop to keep it closed.

Riveting
Solid in hand and nice that it has comes with the various tips mounted right in the tool to swap out. I was very pleased that despite it's size I could fit into tighter spaces. For example I was splicing together 4" venting pipe for a clothing dryer exhaust. You need to open the handles completely to engage the internal catch mechanism, in other words you can't make small steps in the tightening of the rivet. A little tricky if you don't have enough space, but it works. Overall good addition to the tool box.
I didn't realize how handy a riveter can be until I received this product. Usually riveters can be used on thin sheet metal to secure pieces together, maybe to fix a mailbox or a grill or something like that. I had a broken wine opener that was missing the pivot bolt for one of the handles, basically making it worthless. Instead of buying a new one, I decided to try this riveter out and it worked like a charm. It was a bit of an unconventional fix but it worked great. This riveter is easy to use and is built like a tank. It has a solid sturdy metal construction with long rubber ended handles for comfort and to provide more leverage when riveting. It also has swivel head to make the riveting more ergonomic and easy to use and it includes 4 different riveter head sizes with an integrated wrench to exchange them out. It's a very clever design. When using the riveter the rivet wouldn't secure with the first squeeze so I just squeezed a few more times and it worked fine. I am very satisfied with this product and hope to use it again for fix-me-up jobs around the house!
This is a great idea when it's hard to get into tight places with the swivel head. The tool has a on board wrench which makes it easy to change the rivet head size . I like that it also come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty which is no surprise with a Dewalt product. The gun comes with a assortment of rivets which gives you 120 rivets for a good starting point.
Bought 2 of these, and neither one worked with stainless seel rivets

Not good
I've had two of them. The first one lasted for about 20 rivets. The second one never worked.
