I needed something to measure my room size a bit more convenient than a tape measure, and since I like Dewalt tools, I decided on the Dewalt Laser Distant Measure. 65 feet is plenty enough for my purpose and the accuracy of 1/8" is certainly better than I could measure with an tape, especially as I don't have one that long.
The laser can also calculate the square footage of your room as well as the volume, if you should need that for some reason.
It is easy to operate and just what I wanted/needed.
This distance measure is convenient to use for calculating amount of paint or flooring needed for a project, or air volume for HVAC work. However, its user interface is a bit lacking for just distance measuring, the tool is inaccurate below a 24" range, and its display is pretty unreadable in sunlight.
The DeWalt is one of the few tools in its price range that does area and volume as well as simple distance. It can also hold the last 4 measurements in memory on the display. If these are the features you're looking for, then this could be a good buy for you. Otherwise if you're primarily interested in measuring linear distance, I'd go with another option.
The interface is a bit clunky - there are two buttons: the laser and the units button. Pressing or pressing and holding them provides different functionality. Press the laser button once to turn on, and again to take a measurement. Once you've taken a measurement, press again to turn the laser back on, and press again to take another measurement. To switch units, press and hold the units button. It will change between feet and inches, pure inches, pure feet (with hundredths decimal readout), and meters (precise to the millimeter). In inches mode, the readout is precise to the 1/16th of an inch. Pretty standard for this type of tool.
However, the default mode does not allow for continuous measurements on the screen. To activate continuous measurement mode to provide real-time readouts, you'll need to hold the laser button down for two seconds EACH time you want to activate the mode. If you take a measurement while in continuous measurement mode, it kicks you back out to non-continuous measurement mode.
Area and volume calculations operate in a similar manner. If you press the units button, it will switch to area, pressing it again switches to volume. Sometimes it hangs when you press a third time and gets stuck in volume mode instead of moving back to linear mode. Plus, once you take your measurements in area/volume mode, it kicks you back out to linear mode. I have NO idea why DeWalt designed it this way, but it's very frustrating to constantly have to set it back to the proper mode you want to use. If you're doing area calculations, chances are you'll be taking LOTS of measurements that way. You don't want to measure the area of just one wall when calculating the number of gallons of paint you need to buy!
The accuracy is better than stated when operating between the ranges of 2' to 35'. It actually had a ±1/16" accuracy anywhere in that range, which is better than DeWalt's spec of ±1/8". I didn't have a tape longer than 35', so I'll just have to trust DeWalt that it works as calibrated out to 65'. However, I found that for measurements under 24" in length, the laser was usually off by up to 1/4", which is outside the specifications provided by DeWalt.
So if you decide to buy this, it should be for the area or volume calculation capability, because otherwise there are more accurate, similarly priced models out there that do pure linear measurements better.
This laser measure works perfectly and will hold several readings at the same time. It comes with two batteries and functions very accurately.
The digital screen is very easy to read. My husband knew how to use this tool instantly, but I had no clue. There is a very small booklet that comes with the tool, but it includes mostly the warnings about using a laser tool. It really does not have detailed information.
This is a name brand tool and should last a lifetime. It has a rugged exterior and is well manufactured.

After using this distance measurer, I asked myself "Why Did I Wait So long?" I have been building and remodeling things my whole life and I think this DeWalt laser tape is awesome. Nothing is perfect in life, so sure, it has limitations but for the price (which is quickly made up in time savings), it works great. It's small so it's easy to hold and get into tight areas. It logs your last four measurements so no need to write a measurement down every single time.
