At one time these were made in Germany. I’m not certain about the current place of manufacture.

How well will these work when drilling stainless steel?

Asked by: Rhb
I have used them on stainless many times and had no problems as long as I kept the drill rpm's very low and let the bit do the cutting.

Can you use these bits with a cordless hammer drill?

Asked by: ezduzitall
I would use hardened drill bits for "hammer" drilling; they are made 3 - 5 times harder than regular hi speed drill bits to absorb the hammer impacts.

I have owned multiple sets of these Dewalt drill bits over the years and have found that the quality is just not good enough to justify purchasing them any longer. The case they come in is fantastic for throwing in a quick little toolbox or bag and taking to a smaller job site where you might only use them once or twice, but the bits are just not durable enough to use regularly. I have had several of these bits break, especially the pilot point tip. I do some light metalworking and when drilling through a smaller piece of square tube, the pilot point tip just snapped off when starting the hole. Without the pilot point tip, the entire bit is useless. This is the latest example of them failing to work under any sort of load. The smaller bits are great, but the larger ones are garbage and even in wood do a terrible job as the tearout is monstrous. Much better off going with a different brand. Disappointing quality coming from Dewalt on this. Their tools are great, but these bits are just a waste.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall excellent, but drawbacks These are without doubt high quality bits. I have used them for about 6 years, and bought another set for a new household; that says a lot. The downside relates to these bits having "Pilot Point tips" instead of the usual 135 Degree split point that all (?) other drill bits use. The Pilot Point tip is essentially a small diameter split point. But the cutting/drilling surface of the DeWalt bits is flat. Because of this, one cannot use these bit to enlarge a smaller drilled hole, as these bits do not self-center - which all other bits do. Also as a result of the Pilot Point and flat cutting edges, these bits seem to screw themselves into the substrate - without drilling a round hole! - more than standard design bits do. So for these reason, 4 stars, not 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Drill Bit Set I used this drill bit set to drill through some very heavy duty steel (used 7/32" as a pilot then opened it up with the 1/2" bit) so I could run a 1/2" Hex Bolt through it. Not only did the bits not break, but they withstood so much pressure that my wrist was jerked off of the drill on a couple occasions and I have an extremely strong grip. The drill bits look new after use (see picture) and they were so impressive I even took the time to put them back in their case properly (I usually don't bother with the cheap bits that break, and believe me I've broken quite a few). These bits are outstanding.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too fast I have had these for a few years and hate them. They are too aggressive and sink too fast, which usually results in chips and burrs on the exit. It also makes drilling to a median depth nearly impossible without a really good stop. On the larger sizes especially, a smooth hole is nearly impossible as the bit sinks through and then rips out what ever wasn't cut in the few rotations it took to go through. The pilot tips are only on the larger sizes, as is expected, but if you really want your bit to not stray, you better use an awl or punch. The no-slip shanks are also only on the larger 1/3 pieces, which, again, is to be expected and is a nice feature. I have used these on sheet metal and they work ok; nothing to write home about. If you have serious metal projects, get bits that are made specifically for it. The only other reason they don't get 1 star is they do seem to hold their edge well. I just wish it weren't so steep.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality is lacking These are just not the quality you would expect from a name like Dewalt. The first bit I used broke on the 4th hole that I made, snapping the bit off in the hole and this was on soft pine. I had to go find my cheapo drill bits to finish the project. It is sad when the no-name cheapy bits last for years and the name brand bit lasts for about 45 seconds. Save your money unless you just have to have the big name products, because they are not really worth it.

I have been using these bits for at least a decade and a half and have never found any bit to be better than these. Whether drilling into wood, aluminum or steel they have always done the job. I have owned only 2 sets in total and used them to drill literally 50000 or more holes in melamine and perhaps a 1000 or more in metal and thousands more in other wood products. In all that time I had one bit go dull as the person I loaned it to drilled at too high a speed in steel, and I broke one drilling through aluminum for a fitting on my dock. The one I broke was my fault. Over the years I have bought numerous sets of these as gifts for friends of mine and all tell me they are the best bits they ever owned. I believe people who give negative feedback are not familiar with how to operate a drill properly in varying materials. Today I am ordering another set for another friend who will be pleased to receive them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for metal Probably good for wood and other materials, but it says on the package good for metal. If you plan to drill into metal with these, good luck. Perhaps useful for very soft metals. I tried to use these to drill some holes in the bumper of my truck (steel) to install a hitch. As another reviewer mentioned, the pilot point shape makes it next to impossible to enlarge smaller holes. As I was looking to drill a 1/2" hole, that was pretty much my only option. Part way through enlarging from 3/16 to 1/4" the 1/4" drill bit shattered into many pieces. Even before that, progress was painstakingly slow. I would not recommend these for drilling into metal
