SSL-1P Garage Door Security Slide-Bolt Lock

The packaging says, “ONE-PIECE GARAGE HARDWARE” but this product may not be suitable for most applications. First, the instructions state that “FOR FLUSH INSTALLATIONS USE EXTRA RETAINER (INCLUDED IN PACKAGE).” The retainer was not included in the package I received so I was unable to mount it flush to the jamb. In addition, you’ll need to drill a ¾” hole in your jamb face. Obviously, you’ll need a ¾” drill to do this. Hopefully, your jamb face is wood and not metal. I couldn't mount this, but If you can despite the shortcomings, you’re in luck and it will work well. It may work better on a fence gate rather than a garage door. Either way, be prepared to possibly make some modifications to either the door or the jamb, or both. It is heavy duty, but I’m not sure how rust resistant the material is.

I bought this lock when all I could see was bare minimum description and some high level picture and thought it would be a good fit to add additional security to the garage door. But only after I received it, I found that it would not fit ours. But this a great quality door lock and would certainly be tricky for anyone to easily break it or unlock it. Would certainly recommend it but understand how it works before you buy.

The SSL-1P Garage Door Security Slide-Bolt Lock is a good quality slide bolt lock that can be used for both garage door security or to secure a storage locker. I chose this through Home Depot Seeds to secure my garage door. Last year during hurricane season several neighbors had their garage doors lift and the break in air pressure caused roof damage so I felt I needed a second garage door lock for extra security this year. This slide bolt is approximately 1/4 inch thick heavy duty steel and with the addition of a padlock and the padlock cover it would be almost impossible to remove or cut. There is no assembly required, 2 long carriage bolts and washers as well as a ferrule (circular ring for door jam hole) were included. Brief instructions are available on the back of the packaging but if you wanted to use the second method of installation you will need to purchase the bracket shown in the instructions. If you have the right tools the entire installation should be less than 30-40 minutes. The warranty on this product is 1 yr. I would highly recommend this product, it is a high quality slide bolt for < $15.00 and any DIY woman can install it !

The feature that makes this stronger also makes it a little harder to install. The plate that locks down over the shaft of the padlock gets in the way when you are installing it, but that's what gives this a little more security over an unprotected padlock shaft. Put it on my door so that not only can I turn off the opener, I can lock it so that no one can get in by messing with the opener linkage.

Heavy duty is an understatement. This is a massive lock. I installed it on the inside of my garage door to replace the previous lock. It was very easy to install. All I had to do was drill two holes for the carriage bolts. If I had wanted to put it on the outside of the garage door, the only additional step would’ve been to drill a hole in the jamb for the lock bolt to slide into. I took one picture of it in the locked position but with the cover lifted and without the padlock in place. Then I put the cover down and took a picture with the padlock in place. Being able to padlock the cover down obviously adds to security because it is then very difficult to access the padlock.

The SSL-1P garage door lock is simple and strong with added security against cutting a padlock. There are two different installation options for this lock, either the bolt slides into the door jamb or it slides into a bracket(not included). The only option that I would recommend is an installation on the exterior of the door with the bolt sliding into a drilled hole in the door jamb. Installation is very simple. Secure the lock to the door using the included screws, then drill a hole where the bolt will enter the jamb. The added heavy duty cover reduces the ability to use a bolt cutter or hammer to damage a padlock that would be used. This is a heavy duty lock that will outlast any door that it is installed on and provides excellent security when installing on the exterior of the door.

Home Depot (HD) delivery usually arrives earlier than stated, this was no exception. Package tracking is exceptional. The product was packed well, with no damage. I wanted to use this on the inside of my garage. I wanted to be able to turn my remote off and use this to prevent my door from being opened while I was on vacation. Due to my set-up I was unable to install this on my interior garage. However, had I been able I would have wanted to install it lower than the 33'. I felt at 33' the door could have gone up enough to allow someone to place something under the door and roll under the door. Also, I would have used 2'-3'' wood screws on the interior garage. I wouldn't want bolts going through my garage door frame. Some of these come with a loop shank for flush mount of the slide bolt, and no cover. Some come with a cover, and a loop shank. This Slide Bolt came with a cover, and a ferrule, or cap to push the slide bolt into. I think the cap is much more secure. Once the slide bolt slides into the cap and the padlock is installed there would be no way to remove the slide bolt. On the slide bolts that come with the loop shank screwed into a gate, garage(not interior), etc. a person could get a screw driver etc. and force it out. Or, even a good whack with a heavy hammer to knock it off. Once the loop shank is off it could be opened right up even with the padlock on the slide bolt. If I had to use a loop shank I would bolt that on for more security versus the screws that come with the item. The ferrule takes a little more work to drill a hole to place the cap, but well worth the extra effort. I really like how the padlocked cover prevents access to the slide bolt. Overall, this is a heavy duty product. This product would be an affordable way to secure your property.

Hard to find even at home depot but this is the best garage door lock so people dont have to break in garages.
