Q:my filter clogged with in 2 weeks or the pressure reduces what can I do about this
        by|Apr 28, 2020

        Answer This Question

A:  Filter life will depend on local water conditions and water usage in the home, as well as the type of filter being used in this housing. If the filter you are using is getting clogged quickly, a different filter may be a more appropriate choice, or additional water treatment may be necessary.

Q:Are these re-branded of the Glacier Bay that are no longer for sale? Mine is leaking where the pipes connect in and I want to replace since it's already been 3 years.

          Answer This Question

A:  Its more likely the reverse. Glacier Bay is the house brand the someone else makes for HD. Check the connections and see if it will fit. I've had mine for a couple of years with no issue, but I've never seen the Glacier Bay unit. You are going to swap out the whole unit anyway so fit with the existing pipes is really all that you need to care about. It takes a standard filter. My local HD doesn't carry the ECOPURE anymore.

This filter system does exactly what I needed to do. With a carbon filter it eliminates all the taste and odor from city water it's almost as if I have well water again. Depending on what you're going for the price isn't bad at all.

This is our first whole house filter. We are on municipal water supply, but the taste and smell of chlorine and sulfur was always present in our water. I was surprised at the size of the mounting screws, but generally the plastic of the housing, bracket, and screws were robust. This made sense once the filter filled with water the first time, there is quite a bit of weight. The install took some time, but this is no fault of the product. The only thing I thought might be an issue is the bypass valve. It was hard to turn and felt like there was the potential for breakage, especially if there is any deterioration in the material over time.

I like the clear sump which makes examination easy, and the bypass valve with pressure relief to make cartidge changes easy. Installing the filter cartridge is very straight-forward and the included wrench works well. Instructions are very good, even down to the reminder about the ground wire. Flow is very good, with no noticeable difference in pressure or volume. After the flushing of our water heater a couple of months ago, I had decided that I would get a whole house filter to try cut down on some of this sediment. So, I was quite pleased to have the opportunity to review this ECOPURE Whole House Water Filter. This last time I flushed our water heater I was shocked and dismayed by the amount of sand and silt sediment that came out of it. I flush the water heater at least once every year, many years twice. Our city water utility has made considerable changes in things over the past several years, causing unpleasant results. Though I did not measure it, I know I got considerably more than a cup of sediment out. It was so bad, the drain valve plugged 3 times, forcing me to backflush with the hose each time. I quit after the fourth flush. I’m used to small amounts of calcium (need a water softener too), etc., but this was too much. I spoke with a friend (a retired water professional) on a different part of the city system, and he found the same problem. He is also going to install a filter. Upon opening the box, the first thing I noticed was that the provided mounting bracket is made of galvanized steel. If this bracket is used with copper pipe and fittings there is a definite likelihood of electrolysis causing erosion of the copper and/or bracket. HD does not sell NSF PVC nipples, so copper adapters in the valve body was the way to go, for me. I called ECOPURE about this, but the technical people never called back (so much for their help). Then, as I began to fit things up for sweating, I discovered that the threads in the valve body are not horizontal through it. The pipes actually run downhill a few degrees on each side. This makes fitting it up, so the unions (see comments about unions at the end of this review) will face up correctly, a bit of a challenge. I managed to get it all fitted up, with no leaks, but it does put stress on the plastic valve body. It also made it nearly impossible to mount square and plumb, which makes this old pipefitter quite unhappy (I hate out of plumb piping). I did not use the bracket, but mounted the pipe rigidly to the wall with Uni-strut and a pipe clamp. Since most houses in Tucson are built with the water supply entering through the outside walls, all our outside pipes are insulated for the rare cold snaps that can cause them to freeze and burst. I use Armaflex (available at HD), and then wrap that with aluminum tape (also available at HD), which works well and lasts many years. To protect the filter, I’m having a box made by a local sheet metal shop. I’ll insulate that with rigid foam insulation and mount it to the wall around the filter. I ordered the 2 pack of ECOPURE FACT Whole House Water Filter Cartridges to use in it. It’s only been in service for a week, so I can’t really tell if it will make a difference. We didn’t notice any change in taste, but the only tap water we drink goes through the refrigerator filter (not perfect, but rated to remove 16 contaminants), or used in cooking, so the chlorine is cooked off anyway. It has not been used long enough to know if sediment will be reduced. However, I cannot recommend this filter unless ECOPURE changes the bracket to brass, or puts a good polymer isolator in it to insulate the piping, and if they can get the threading in the valve body straight. Due to the stress placed on the filter (by the crooked pipes), I used an extra union and made a substitute piece to quickly install in place of the filter in case it breaks. --- Regarding unions, NIBCO (carried by HD) quality has gone down and they do not always face up (mate) correctly, which can cause leaks. I suspect that some of the bad reviews of NIBCO unions are due to incorrect installation. Unions ARE directional (see sketch in photo). However, the last NIBCO union I used, several years ago, did not mate correctly and leaking was an issue. Anyway, I purchased a different brand (Elkhart which mate perfectly) from another supplier, at less than 1/3 the cost of NIBCO at HD. The only problem with that was waiting an extra week for them to arrive which delayed installation of the filter. I always use a bit of Teflon pipe dope on the backside of the union flange and the treads on the other half (NEVER on the face). I do the same thing with compression fittings. The dope (which is NOT a sealer) prevents galling by lubricating the nut and threads making them much easier to mate, and open later if necessary.

For peace of mind, a water filter you can see that it is doing its job. Model # EPW2VC Internet #301529633 EcoPure Valve-In-Head Whole Home Water Filter System The clear sump is different from other filters because now you can see what is going on and know when you need to change the filter without having to guess. I especially love the Valve-In-Head feature. See the photo that shows the handle on top. That handle means I don't have to run extra water lines to bypass the filter and extra shut off valves. Turn the handle to BYPASS and you can replace the filter without loosing water flow to your home. The pressure release button adds to the ease of changing the filter, thus saving time and hassle. After receiving the shipment, I opened the package and reviewed the instructions to determine how the installation worked. I did notice that the Filter was made for a 3/4 inch water supply line. I have 1/2 inch supply line. I went to Home Depot to see if they had the appropriate female adapter with NPT threads. I did find them and purchased two - one for each side. After turning the water off at the main, I then followed the Manufacturers instructions on installation. Please note that if the water pipe is not close enough to the wall to mount the filter to the wall for stability purpose you will need to build it up with plywood for example to attach the filter to it. In retrospect, you might want to consider placing an on/off valve before the filter in the event of a total breakdown and potential flooding, especially if the filter is far from the main. There is a by-pass valve on the filter you can use to change the filter.

This is the unit on the left in the photo below. I have not installed it yet. The unit itself appears sturdy and well made. The only issue I had in my application was with the mounting bracket. The unit is suspended through two holes by the NPT fittings that are screwed in. Which is fine if the mounting position doesn't have to be precise because the mounting holes in the bracket are behind the head of the unit. Because I daisy chained it with another unit my positioning was more.critical. My solution was to modify the bracket by opening up the fitting holes to just provide support underneath. I used a Sharkbite fitting to ease replacement should it be necessary in the future. Not the best instruction format that I've seen, three languages in the same paragraph.

The water in my area is supplied by a community well with no or poor filtration. I decided that a whole house water filter would be a wise investment. This water filter has a bypass valve on top that will bypass the filter chamber when you want to change the filter without cutting off the water. The water filter includes a bracket that will support the water filter unit. The water filter system does not include 3/4" fittings to attach the filter to the water pipes. While installing some 3/4" Sharkbite fittings, I cut my thumb on the sharp plastic top edge of the filter holding chamber. That edge does not need to be sharp at all. Be careful! It would be nice if ECOPURE offered an insulated cover for this water filter. My installation is in a crawl space and now I need to figure out how to keep it from freezing!

I have used sediment filters in my home water supply for more than 20 years. I like this clear water filter so you can see how contaminated the system is and not find out when you open or change the filter. This filter can use several different 10" filters and I like the 10 micron string wound filter. You can easily attach this filter unit to copper or cpvc using the sharkbite kit for water filters with 3/4 fittings. Everytime I change the filter I lubricate the "O" ring with silicone grease. After cleaning the housing inside and out and reinstalling it I recommend turn on the water very slowly and let the cartridge fill so the "O" ring stays seated. This filter contains all the parts necessary and has a lower cost than some other ones that are not clear. This filter is high quality and should last for many years.

IMPRESSIVE - Very well made and easy to install. Has standard 3/4 in. FPT connections on both sides. IN and OUT are clearly marked. What I really like about it is that it has a clear see through canister which makes it easy to tell when the filter cartridge needs to be changed. The unit as a whole is made out of very thick durable plastic. There is a bypass valve built-in on the top, which operate easily, along with a red pressure release button. Comes with mounting hardware, directions and 1 x Melt Blown (EPW2B) filter cartridge. This unit accepts almost all brands of standard whole home cartridge filters. I will be using this unit in the very near future to filter my hard water entering my new tankless water heater.

We're sorry to hear you've had trouble with loss of water pressure in your home. This product is a filter housing compatible with most brands and types of standard universal 2.5"x10" filter cartridges. If the filter you're using is becoming clogged too quickly, we suggest trying a different filter, possibly one with a higher micron rating. ecopure
