Q:What kind of padlock would you buy to secure a gate latch like this?

      Answer This Question

A:  Any normal padlock will work as long as diameter is under .02”

      by|Feb 11, 2021

A:  Most common or standard padlocks will work with the Everbilt Galvanized Gate Latch.

      by|Feb 11, 2021

A:  I see no reason to use any special type padlock. A regular padlock that will fit into the latch's hole will suffice. Maybe 1/4, 5/16 or possibly 3/8 inch maximum diameter? If you need to lock it because of concern for theft, I suggest using bolts, with washers and nuts on the opposite (inside) side , instead of wood screws, of the gate/shed. This will make it harder to pry off the locked latch.

A:  Hi Lee - there is only one version but it will work on either the left or right side

A:  It can be used as left hand or right hand.

          by|Dec 13, 2018

A:  This product can be used for left or right handed.

            by|Dec 10, 2018

A:  You flip the latch pin to accommodate left or right hand applications.

              by|Jul 28, 2021

A:  I would not think so since this can be mounted either way., As a matter of fact I had to flip mine after initially screwing it on because I had though I would reverse which way the gsate swung. But I had forgot I had a piece at the bottom of my gate preventing that.

The Everbilt galvanized gate latch is a great galvanized piece that you can use as a latch on almost any size gate. If you’re looking for a latch that will stand up to outside latching and gat usage, consider this as a decent sized latch. It comes with the latch, bar, and 6 screws in total (4 for the latch and 2 for the bar that gets screwed into the door)

The gate late is fantastic. It’s very simple, yet it’s construction is very solid and will last you for a very long time. I like this latch because it only takes minutes to install with just a screwdriver of your choice. The latch has a couple options I like: it has a small hole on the top of the latch mechanism itself to attach a cable or string as a safety so you won’t lock yourself in somewhere , it’s great for a tall solid gate you can’t reach over lot thru to unlock. It also has a hole at eh bottom of the latch mechanism to allow you to lock it. The screws are provided in the package to install it in most applications. I highly recommend this latch.

A simple self-latching gate latch, made of quality galvanized metal, with a brass pivot pin and galvanized screws. The two screws for the bolt look to be #9 and are 1-1/4 inches in length, while the four screws for the latch are probably #8 and are 3/4 inch in length. The throat on the latch is about an 1-1/4 wide, and there is a hole to attach a wire on the top of the latch which can be threaded through the gate so it can be opened from the other side. And there is a hole into which a padlock can be inserted.

Great quality gate latch. This latch has good fasteners to hold the latch and plate in place preventing any looseness. The galvanized steel is more corrosion resistant than regular steel so these will hold up well outdoors and they won't rust easily. This is a very sturdy part and the 4 screws on strike plate and 2 large screws for latch provide a tight seal. I recommend this latch for anyone looking to install new or replace a standard gate.

Replaced my galvanized gate latch with this stainless steel latch. The galvanized latch was about 5 years old, but had rusted in several spots. Rust shouldn't be a problem for a long while with this stainless steel latch. Installation was easy. The back of the package offers clear installation instruction, with pictures. I'd buy this gate latch again no problem.

This was a good find for my gate project. The gate latch is made from stainless steel which makes it perfect for the harsh northeast weather. The gate latch installed in 5 minutes using the provided stainless screws. Directions for installation are on the rear of the package. The latch also has a hole for a padlock which is not provided. To open just raise the latch. To close you simply swing the gate closed as the latch is self closing.

I requested this gate self-latching product to repair one of my gates. I have an old wooden gate that can last one more year, and all it needs is some touch-up, which this latch came in very handy. It took me less than ten minutes to attach it to the gate. Before screwing the latch and the center bar, ensure that both aligned well with the post side fence/wall and the gate. I attached the center bar first to the gate, and last I secure the latch with four screws. Since my wooden post is four-inch-thick, I used a longer screw than the one provided in the kit for a stronger secure latch. The product is well-made, and it comes with all the necessary hardware. To conclude, the self-latch mechanism works perfectly, and if it is attached securely, it will last many years.

This latch works pretty good on my 25 year old gate. I replaced a rusty old 25 year old version of the same latch. The old one was galvanized but it did eventually weather and rust. If this one lasts as long it will outlast me. The gate does latch securely when it closes with this one. I was skeptical about that because the piece that swings down over the bar is very light weight and seems flimsy. (that is why 4 stars instead of 5) However it seems to latch securely easier than did the self adjusting version of this same latch. So I’m happy with this one. I used it as part of doing some maintenance on the gate on the lower end of my fence around my back yard. I have 2 split 8 foot gates and a 4 foot gate. This latch is on one of the split 8 foot gates. This gate had fallen into disuse because it was a pain to open. Now I can use it easily again.

We’ve been using the original latch on our gate to our deck since we moved in 5 years ago, keeping the dogs confined to the deck when we needed to. It’s failed a few times and needed to be bent back in place to catch properly when closing. Not sure what took me so long to replace the latch, but having one that works every time is key. We picked up the Everbilt Stainless Steel Gate Latch in stainless a few weeks ago and I couldn’t be happier with the function of the latch. I always like to beef up the hardware that comes with things because that is just how my mind works but this set came with everything we needed and I didn’t have to! Very happy with this purchase.
