The Fantech dryer exhaust fans have been specially designed to solve the problems caused by long duct runs on clothes dryers. The performance of all fans is illustrated on a graph called a performance curve. One axis you have the output in CFM and on the other the resistance which we call pressure drop. The curve illustrates fan performance across its operating range. At one end of this curve, where you have no resistance, the unit will move 185 Cubic Feet Per Minute. This is the figure that most manufacturers promote when describing a fan. But it is a little deceiving as you will always have duct work and the drop off in performance created by the resulting pressure drop is different with every fan. With some fans the performance quickly drops off with only slight resistance. By calculating the pressure drop created by the duct work and consulting the curve you can determine exactly what you will get in your application. With resistance equal to 1.2 Inches of Water Column the curve shows you will get 80 CFM and at 2 inches of water column the flow of air will stop. In this scenario the total force of the fan is absorbed by the friction of the duct work.

Fantech strongly recommends using rigid duct work on dryer vents because the smother surface is less likely to sustain lint build up. Flex duct has an uneven surface that creates resistance and allows for lint build up. There fore you may end up having to clean the line more frequently. However so long as the flex duct is code approved for the application it can be used.
